I think u got extremely lucky in that this was an extraordinary live version, the problem is that some bands are so great and empathetic that they can transform a performance of a song to fit the mood of an audience of hardcore fans, in the moment on that exact night, and then adjust the performance again, for the same song, the next night....this is what u2 does 1000%...im glad u enjoyed it, i think u would have even more knowing the album version, again, im really glad u got lucky, but this is more for someone who knows the song backwards and forwards and not a first time listener, but it was great...he started the song a little weak, and vulnerable, vocally (all on purpose, bc hes a great singer), but on the album his voice is as present and as arresting as it was on the studio version of their song “One”....in your spare time, just check out the album version, i think youll get this amazing performance even more....and yes, on the album they lyric is “with or without you.......i cant live......with or without you” its super clear on the studio version, but quite muffled here....live versions for any band are hit or miss for newbies, and not always because theyre “bad” versions, but for the above mentioned reasons too.....great reaction, just check out the studio version in ur spare time at some point.....just beware of some live versions.....there are exceptions, some bands are better live and crap on the album, some bands, like u2, are equally great at both, just....different, so, be aware of that, different and tailored for hardcore fans

Hey Bisscute, great reaction! From what I understand, Bono wrote this song when the band had really started to take off with their "Unforgettable Fire" album and their performance at the Live Aid benefit concert in 1985, which was a globally televised event. At that time, he was also faced with these responsibilities of being a husband and father. He wrote this song about these directions life was pulling him and through this song he realized, it wasn't about just being a rock star or just a family man, but the constant tug of war between these aspects of himself. I hope that answers your question.

"Bono told Rolling Stone that 1986 had been "an incredibly bad year" for him, personally, and it was "almost impossible to be married and be in a band on the road." But, he told Jobling, he "didn't want to write about romance because that doesn't interest me as much as the other side." So he embraced what he called "the two-edged sword" of love"

@EnervatedSociety
@EnervatedSociety Год назад
Yep, agreed. It's tuned a bit different, the infinite guitar parts are higher + more atmospheric (huge difference) in the original studio ver. His voice was captured 16+ years younger and processed just right for the sound of times which is just as integral to the song as the lyrics, vocals and instrumentation. Also, he just plain sang it better by a mile and of course it's actually the whole song in it's original arrangement. The isolation of parts + atmosphere around those parts I'm missing as well. That's just some of what I'm missing, I could go on. Plainly, this song was made in the studio for the studio. So yes, def missing plenty. “It was not a band/room performance, it was a control room concoction . . ." Daniel Lanois (co producer with Brian Eno)

Not always to this degree, but they certainly make you feel like you are "seen" in the crowd. @ClaytonMacleod
@ClaytonMacleod Год назад
I believe reactors tend to choose live performances simply because quite often the studio versions will get blocked when live performances will not. I agree that studio recordings should be the first exposure because of how much care and attention they get while being produced. While live performances can be magical at times, generally the studio recording is made as perfect as it can be and will represent the song at its best. This video in particular had a very touching scene with the fan, but the studio recording contains better performances by the band, including the singer. It has details that help paint a more beautiful picture than this live performance did. Quite often singers will drastically change their performance of songs when in concert because they’re sick of performing the same song over and over, not because it improves the song, but just because they’re bored of it. I feel that is the case here. I was looking forward to her reaction until I noticed “live” in the title, and I was disappointed. Nothing stopping her from listening to the studio version on her own time, of course, but I was eager to see a reaction to that rather than something in concert. Oh well.
@norkannen
@norkannen Год назад
Imo the absolute other way around. Its not what you can tweak in the studio that show what u can do pure.
@ClaytonMacleod
@ClaytonMacleod Год назад
@@norkannen I understand the appreciation of a live performance. I’m eternally broke from going to concerts, hehe. I’ve been to hundreds and hundreds of them. This doesn’t change that I can hear Bono in this performance being a lazy ass and not singing the song properly. ;) If he was this lazy on the studio recording it wouldn’t be as good as the actual studio recording is. They’re very different. The studio performance of this song is a very nice piece of art. This live performance isn’t bad, but the singer is being lazy. He’s not doing his best to perform it really well. This can’t even be argued because he very clearly is half-assing it here and there rather than nicely singing each line, shall we say, on-melody. Not to mention it is just literally impossible for the band to reproduce everything that they recorded because each person is only one person. There are more parts to the song than can be performed by those three people on the instruments, so they have to pick and choose things to leave out.

This might be off topic, and apologies because im going to start a long ramble here, but I want to tell you about one of the most interesting things I've heard about U2, but I don't really know is true. It was part of the VH-1 TV show "Legends" episode on U2, but I've never heard it mentioned anywhere else, nor have I ever heard the guys from U2 ever talk about it, so I've never been able to confirm whether it's real, or it was bullshit that Vh-1 just made up to make the show more interesting. Oh, by the way, this is the second time I've mentioned Vh-1, and it occurs to me that you're young enough that you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. Vh-1 stands for Video Hits 1. It was a cable channel that use to show music videos, and were sort of competition to MTV, except they were smaller, probably with not as much money, and were no where near as successful, popular, and as hip as MTV. When I was a kid, they mainly showed videos of bands that were more older classic rock stuff, as opposed to newer hit music, ironically. Eventually though, they started making shows like "Legends" and "Behind The Music" that were like rock n roll documentaries, which became very popular and elevated their profile. Anyways, the guys from U2, especially Bono and The Edge, have known each other since at least high-school, if not longer. So, the story is that at one point early on before their success, they became born again Christians, except for Larry the drummer, and at one point even discussed whether they should kick Larry out of the band because of it. Obviously they didn't, and if it was true, I don't know that they ended up staying that religious, but it always made me feel bad for poor Larry who must've felt like, "What the fuck? I thought I was joining a rock n roll band with my mates because I wanted to rock out on the drums, maybe have some fun and meet some chicks! How'd I all of a sudden become the asshole?" Again, I have no idea if it's true, but it's just interesting to me, and sometimes seems to fit with some of the other things I think I know about them. Like, I'm pretty sure that Bono's wife was his high-school sweetheart, and they've been together all this time since they were very young. Which in the context of this song, you have to imagine what it must've been like to have met so young, and then gone through all of that together, including him becoming one of the biggest rock stars in the world. You might not get it, but in the 80s and 90s, Bono was very literally one of the hugest celebrities in the entire world. He has also always been very outspoken about political issues, humanitarian causes, and charity, which you'd think is a good thing, but lots of people thought of him as a pretentious asshole for it. They had a documentary about the making of their album Achtung Baby a while back, and I watched it thinking, I'm gonna figure this out, but I just felt like, damn. Either Bono really is that fucking cool, or he really is an incredibly pretentious asshole! He seems very down to earth in interviews I've seen him in, and I'm a fan, so I give him the benefit of doubt, but if I'm being honest, I don't know that I can genuinely tell which it is, and haters going to hate! So, since I've gone on this long, I'll tell you about one more thing. There was a movie from like ten years ago called "Killing Bono" that's supposedly a true story. At least according to this one guy. That guy being Neil McCormick, who went on to be a writer and journalist, and I think the movie is based off his writings, but he was like a buddy of theirs from school. In fact, when they first put U2 together in high-school, they wanted his brother to play guitar in the band, but he was basically an arrogant dick that said, no. If you guys are going to make a band, so am I, and he's my brother, so he has to be in my band. So, who knows what might've happened, but basically he screwed his brother over on being part of one of the biggest rock bands ever. He basically always saw himself in competition with Bono, but was such an asshole that he fucked up any opportunities that they ever had, screwing over his brother and the rest of the band, but was always so jealous and blamed Bono for it, as if he ever had anything to do with it. The funny part about it is that it was basically in his head, and I'm not sure that Bono was ever aware that they were supposed to be in competition with each other. It seems like when they crossed paths, Bono was just like, hey how's it going old school buddy? I'm he's a bright guy. I'm sure he was aware on some level, but he probably didn't realize quite how much hatred this guy held towards him.

Their best song without a doubt was Sunday Bloody Sunday. the next best was the U2/Mary J Blige version of One. That was honestly the last decent thing they did. Everything else was a big drop down from there. This is still a good song, it's my third best but it hurts me the most in personal ways. I can't say it's better than the other two despite how much it personally affects me. this song has burnt me personally twice in ways that you really dont wanna ask about.

I usually better like the original performance cause the sound is really what they had in mind. Bono was a kid singing about love. Song was more agressive. I didn't like this performance, it was too whiny.

A true work of art leaves the author's hands to the viewers/listeners, and each viewer/listener adds their own understanding and thoughts to it regardless of what the author thought/felt when creating the story. The consumer of the work of art, however, is based on his level of erudition. So, for example, it is difficult for me to explain what I feel and go through when listening to this song. At the same time, it is quite interesting to listen to different so-called thinkers. There are billions of people in the world, but classical music is forever.

Bono is singing to God, or Source, or to his Higher Self - how ever you want to thinking about a higher power. Or he is putting himself in God's shoes and sining to himself. This song is about his relationship with his own soul.

Just for everyone's information: Bono has actually finally realised that all the stupid 'charity' work he's done for decades was useless, empty virtue-signalling and he has admitted that it was all a waste of time if not actually negative in effect.

As I understand, he was thinking about the concept of being secretly in love with someone who both doesn’t know you have those feelings for them and perhaps you aren’t in their league.

Bono had some major problems with his voice on this þour, IIRC. That he manages to sing at all here is a wonder.

As much as I appreciate U2 and this song this is a perfect example for a good mixed studio song where the singer isn´t able to match it live. 😕
