Cool, I did the update yesterday and I too have a real 4x12 cab loaded with UK made V30s, it’s like you did the very thing I was wanting to do, thanks Bruh!
Really good tip about using the (virtual) condenser mics vs the 57. Going with your ears, not your eyes! I always had mixed results with my mini Dirty Shirley (recently upgraded to Twin Sister) and preferred the Suhr RL IRs for it. But this really opens things up. Thanks!
Very cool man. It is funny how when you mic a cab, it sounds great by just putting a SM57 on the place where the cone meets the dust cab. When you use IRs or other things I just always feel like I have to tweak a bit to get there.
It's not that hard if you have a great sounding cab, and speaker, and mic pre, and are able to crank up decently loud, and have some isolation so you can actually hear what you're doing without blasting out your ears. But, even with isolation, I get self conscious, and don't like playing super loud, unless I know exactly what I'll be playing. quiet is kinda nice. :)
The single SM57 doesn’t sound that great. But if you look at the software as a single package, it’s pretty great. If you break it down into single elements, you lose a lot. At the end of the day, This set of mics was the closest. Way closer that the 57 setting. Also, I think I did do that in an older video when the Ox just came out. Sorta.🤷🏻♂️
Great video, thanks a lot for your insights! One question if you don‘t mind: how do you monitor the sound while using the ox? Do you use the line outs from the ox directly to your monitors, or are the monitors hooked up to your audio interface set as output from your DAW?
Michael, have you had a chance to try out the Boss Waza Tube Amp Expander? There are several comparisons out there already, but I am curious about your take on it. They both seem like killer products with some overlapping features.
FYI if you are updating from 1.1 with the OX, you don't need to make the USB key etc - open the 1.2 app on Mac desktop and go to settings and it will do the firmware update over Wifi!
A frowny vid, lots of concentration :O) Yep, the Ox is a force to be reckoned with alright. If you have the gear/space then hey, use the real thing, but it's a hell of a tool for those who don't...
@@BigHairyGuitars I'm actually sat here thinking that I don't know whether you're grinning, or offended. But I really mean it, if I/you have the real thing then of course you would use it, but if not, then it's pretty much right up there. And you DO frown a lot when you play!
I am so torn between this with amp heads and an axe Fx 3. I have the Kemper am Michael Brit profiles and love it just with those profiles. I also have a Pod Go but I am not happy with it. There are a couple of amp sounds that have more perimeters that I can get to sound pretty decent but nothing great. I think that if there were more options to tweak the sound I could get it to sound pretty good. So I feel like Axe Fx 3 would be the modeler for me. But I am more concerned about best sound for the money yet, I like the idea of learning more about gear in every detail. The Axe Fx 3 would be a learning experience as well as a lot of sounds for the money. On the flip side I think actual tube amp heads thru the ox gives me virtually infinite sounds but is the real thing. All this new gear is good but it makes it so hard to decide. Lol My favorite so far for the money is the Kemper with the Britt profiles. The amplifire and the Helix are sub par to my ears. But I am going thru cheap studio monitors which is a huge factor. I could possibly get a good frfr speaker and it could sway my decision. But based on my experience, the Kemper has the best “resolution” for lack of a better term. It sounds great through the cheap monitors but the others that I have tried don’t. I could toss a coin and just pick one I guess. I could see about 4 to 5 real tube amp heads and an ox box into my monitors sounding pretty good and it would hold it’s value better than the Axe Fx 3 but I wouldn’t have the stellar effects right away and I would have to buy pedals to add effects. Both of these are very appealing but for different reasons. The compactness of the Axe Fx3 is really attractive for me but if the real tube amps and the ox box is 1% better in sound that could sway me. Man this is tough! Especially when I am considering a new guitar that is 6k. Lol
Hey Michael, thanks for the video. I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger but wanted to ask you - not to put you on the spot, but would you feel comfortable using this on a session / project for a client, or would you immediately go for your live rig?
Micheal did you see once you upgrade the firmware you no longer have to use the USB stick to update the OX, this was only from Version 1.0 Firmware. if you had version 1.1 software, it does the update over Wifi My IOS app initiated the firmware update. So I think we be seeing more updates now they have an easy way to update the firmware.
Gregory Stoner Yes when I started the app it notified of a firmware update and asked if you want to install and it went direct to the Ox! You can now plug in a foot switch and control the effects. I’m using a 3 button digitech fs3x and works great! Configure any type in the app go to top assign>footswitch.
I’m considering getting the Ox or a Suhr reactive load. I’ve been using a Kemper and love the recorded tones but it just lacks the feel of a big amp in the room. I doubt this will totally fix that but would the Ox or Suhr be a step in the right direction?
Michael, have you ever used Amplitube? I have been relying on it more and more considering I am just a hobbyist and it is far more cost effective in an apartment. Now that Joe Satriani is endorsing it my doubt's are silenced! But I don't see many guys like you talking about it, even though i thought it was on par or better than Helix native in my trials. As much as I'd love the Ox, it is a bit outside my price range if Amplitube is in the same ballpark.
I just purchased this yesterday. There is no signal at the headphones, line-outs, or in the app. I do have signal on the speaker through. I have updated the firmware and software to 1.2, performed hard reset, swapped out cables, etc. all with the same results. I can set everything up in my Captor X and all works as expected. So frustrating. Anyone have any ideas? Waiting to hear back from UA.
Great review. Why not compare apples to apples and use a single SM57 in the OX since your using a single SM57 on the Bogner cab? No second mic to blend or room mic.....apples to apples.
Hi Brent. In theory, the 57 vs 57 test makes sense, however, the single 57 in the OX doesn’t sound that great. This mic combo worked nicely, so I thought it was more important to try to get the OX sounding as good as possible. Ultimately, it gets close. I didn’t even have to engage the compression or very much EQ. Vast improvement over the v1 software.
Mike, this sounds really awesome. I am trying to decide between the OX and a Suhr Reactive Load IR. The Suhr is half the price of an OX. Would you say that OX is worth the cost? Is there enough of a difference between an IR and the OX modeled cabs to justify it? Which has better realism? OX or IRs?
Suhr reactive load imo! It’s definately a more true representation of all frequencies being tracked.... and live using the ox is a bit rough, totally colors the tone of the amp of you try and use the power soak... IF you plan on incorporating it into a live setting... But if your just recording at home or noodling and want the zeppelin 1 sound or evh brown sound, then get the ox ha!
@@TheScottWhyte Yeah; I am not using it live. I don't play live. I am wanting to get a great studio sound. I have the reactive load IR for live if I wanted. But from what I hear, the OX can not be compared to for studio use. Especially the recent updates.
How are you running your ox box out? Are you using two trs cables or spdif? If trs are you going line in or regular inputs into the interface? Reason why I’m asking is because the headphone out sounds significantly better like how the audio in your video is. A lot more rich and full than into my interface.
Worth the money Michael? Or do you think there are other unit in the same price tag better then the Ox? Considering all the features. Thanks! Another great video!👏🤘
2 questions, what desk is that? I’ve been looking for something with a 3u rack slot, which it looks like that is (curious about that amp shelving too, looks all custom)Also, could you please do something with the 27 rigs based on classic albums/tones? Thanks 🤘🏻🎸
Michael Nielsen thanks for the reply, I’ll google that guy and see what’s up. Yeah, a vid where you go through those 27 and see if they hit those tones would be awesome 🤘🏻🎸
No, OX's tech goes beyond static IRs. We do dynamic speaker models that react to the input signal. However, if you do what to use IRs, you can output the direct signal from OX and use whatever 3rd party IR loader you want.
For the money, the St. Rock can't be beat. However, St. Rock doesn't really do attenuation, if that's what you're looking for. If you have IR's that you like, the St Rock will get the job done perfectly and inexpensively. If you want more control on the fly, and haven't got into IR's, and want FX for recording, and have the extra money... the OX is killer.
Wowww you really nailed the sound after the eq/filter thingy... That was seriously impressive, the sound is pretty identical, but I really really wonder why UA and all the other IR/loadbox companies don't do this by default (reproducing the custom eq curve for every mic)
We do. But because each time you mic an amp is different. Move the mic a millimeter, sound changes. He felt the need to EQ things with his particular setup, you might not etc.
Woow great eq . i like OX but steel cant decide between OX and Two Notes Torpedo. maybe you can help me . i already have Fryette power station for attenuator
If budget is a concern, the ST. ROCK React IR is the way to go. If you’re looking over $1000, then you have to weigh which features are most important to you.
Nice, I’ve never heard a bad word about the Barefoot. I live half mile from Vintage King, I get an eye and ear full every time I get nerve to go there. I’m just gathering intel for monitors because I’m buying a new pair after Xmas. Thank you sir 🤘🏻
Locoandchooch I’m considering a new pair for home. So I have some ATC monitors coming next week to try. The Neumann Monitors are really great too. Much cheaper than Barefoot, but still not cheap.
