Hi, Lina! I'm a university student from Japan and I’m studying to get a right to go to ubc as a exchange student. Your videos always make me motivated, so thank you!
Watched this one to evaluate my post grad school options. The site has some good info but seeing it all like this is just way better. Thank you so much❤️
I feel bad for international students that need to pay tuition (which is very expensive) and pay a residence like a studio, UBC should make more economic rooms
I love watching your videos. I am going to be a junior in high school and my dream school is UBC. I also want to major in psychology and minor in business so your videos are really inspiring and makes me work harder.
Hi, do u know the earliest date u can apply to get a studio for winter 2025/26? Would applying early garuntee a spot or a there other criteria? Thanks.
ahh thank you so much! I personally love watching other UBC RU-vidrs too, it's really cool to see the university through other people's perspectives :)
@@lina.lecompte Lina , can.i live with my partner there together ?? ( If we are in that university ) because I know that in Germany you can but I didn't know about this !! Thanks for the video
@@axxel_o you're not allowed to do that! Your partner can stay with you some nights (there's rules around how many night per month), but the rule is that he/she can't actually be living with you.
Hi! I'm nauman . And i'm coming to UBC in September intakes . Your video makes me stay motivated . And one more thing you haven't mentioned the cost per month or ann
congrats! all of that information is up online with just a quick google search. Here are the fees for Gage (the residence complex I was staying at): vancouver.housing.ubc.ca/applications/fees-payments/walter-gage/ mine would be the Apartment - Studio
hi! there was some when I was there, and sometimes it got a bit annoying but the way my room was facing wasn't too bad! But it's been a while since then, so honestly I don't know how bad it would be now - or if they're done most of the construction. I would probably ask on reddit.com/r/UBC if I were you! :) hopefully you'll get better answers over there
Did the apartment come furnished with the bed frame, desk and night stand or did you have to bring that yourself? Seems like it’s be pretty chaotic for moving days if everyone had to bring such large pieces of furniture lol
Wow! The interior looks like a hotel I’ve visited but tbh the exterior like the whole building looks old no offense ehhh I’ve watched another UBC dorm tour and WOW it looked so new!
hahaha agreed! I think the inside is what really matters tho, glad they renovated it! I did live in Ponderosa another year and that one is much newer, that video is up on my channel under my "university" playlist
Can you please let me know the name of the dorm residence that had a bigger fridge. I am asking for a student who has food allergies and needs to prepare her own food.
hi lina! i was wondering, are you able to choose to get your own room or were your fortunately not assigned with a roommate? also, if you are able to choose, are you able to choose who exactly to room with or is that out of your control?
Hi! you're not able to choose your own room! You'll rate your top choices, but from then on it's kind of like a lottery! First year you'll get a guaranteed room (not like this one at all though), and from then on the chances of getting a place are a lot slimmer. You are allowed to make roommate requests however, and for the most part they do pair you up with who you selected.
Hi! It's 8 months initially (September-April), and you can't renew residency here at all! You'd have to apply all over again and see if you get lucky to get the place- Because this is what is called a "Winter Session Contract", but if you were to get a "Year-Round" place (literally year round not just the 8 months), then you're able to renew every year. (the downside is if you're not taking summer classes you'd have to still pay rent or get a subletter)
I wanna go to UBC so bad lol! I’m going to grade 12 this September so the pressure is high! In grade 11, i ended off with a 91% average. I have no idea if this is good enough. Would I still have a chance? And also, does UBC pay more attention to your grade 12 marks? Thanks so much!!
Hi! That would definitely be good enough! I have tons more info about the application process and a lot of tips that I think would be helpful and would help you figure out what you should be working towards in grade 12 :) here's the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tZau13cOt7k.html
Hi Lina! I'm interested in applying to UBC this fall. I haven't really watched many of your videos, I just found you hehe, so i don't know what you're majoring in UBV. But I'm thinking of applying as a psychology major, do you know if they're any good?
kania valyne hi! I’m majoring in psychology and I really really like the program - 90% of my professors have been really amazing and I really enjoy it! I’m also pretty sure it’s considered one of the top universities for psychology in Canada! If you want application tips I made a whole video on that here : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tZau13cOt7k.html :)
Hi, Lina! I just received a res offer for Walter Gage with an accommodation type: single room! I'm not actually sure what that means since I'm pretty sure Walter Gage is often 6 bedrooms. Does my single room mean it's an apartment? just curious! love the vid :)
Hi that's exciting! Are you in first year? If so, that probably means it'll be one of the 6 people ones. Because this studio is only available to upper year students!
oh cool! I'm not 100% sure if mine ever said "single room" but I'm pretty sure it would've said "studio" instead. I think single room is referring to those that are you get your own single room, but share common areas with 5 other people. I've personally heard a lot of horror stories from those rooms, because getting along with 5 other people can be tricky (cleanliness, different personalities, sleep schedules, and so on).... I think 5 roommates is quite a lot, especially if you don't know any of them. But if you really value the on campus residence experience and everything else it could work? You could get placed with great roommates. In my opinion, it's definitely a risk to take, and personally not one that I would take seeing as it's still kind of expensive. But that's just me - maybe go on reddit.com/r/UBC and use the search bar to look up "gage" and see what other people's experiences have been like?
hi lina! I'm a prospective student (I graduate in 2021) and I'm super interested in UBC! For first-year dorms, how hard is it to get the dorm you want? How hard is it to get a single room?
Hi! It depends on what dorm you want - Orchard Commons is usually more difficult to get than the other residences because most people want it cuz it's the newest building. It's harder to get a single connected room (single room, and you just share a washroom with one person - your room is connected to their through the washroom - I have a video up of what that looks like), than a single room where you share a communal washroom with your floor.
Are the rules with having guests? & I know some schools have a certain amount of times a guest can stay over, do they actually check that they’re there for a certain amount of nights and not more?
Yes there are! Each contract will specify (I honestly don't remember what it was) but it's here: vancouver.housing.ubc.ca/applications/residence-contracts/ you can download the contract and see what it says specifically. But honestly... they never really checked! Obviously you can't have someone there living with you 24/7, and they'd probably catch onto that. But besides that I definitely had some friends stay over every once in a while!
why did you leave pandorosa in favor of gage? I'm trying to sublet for winter term 1 in pand, and a lot of people are asking for different rent from 1100, 1140 and 1250, they all claim that this is what they are paying!!! are they trying to make money off of me?! is it possible that housing is giving different prices for different students? I would appreciate any advice from you, thx
My contract was up! It was an 8 month contract (Winter Session) that is not renewable! So I reapplied for Winter Session placement and was placed in Gage instead. As for subletting.... students are only allowed to sublet if they have Year Round housing, so you can check out what they're actually paying here: vancouver.housing.ubc.ca/applications/fees-payments/ponderosa-commons/ and see if you're getting a good price or not. It really is up to each student how much they want to sublet you for.... but usually it tends to be less money than what they're actually paying. I also recommend that you look through some subletting threads on reddit.com/r/UBC . hope that helps!
@@lina.lecompte so which dorm you like more? I have a winter term 1 and 2 offer at gage, and a winter 1 sublet offer at Pandorosa with an ocean view, I asked housing how they assign rooms, they said randomly!!! This is bs honestly, I should have the right to choose the apartment where I want to live!!!
Hi! I think it has 5 floors, you can kind of see it around the 0:06 mark really quickly if you pause! I also have a move in Vlog into Gage apartments that might have slightly longer footage of the outside! Congrats on getting a room there, not everyone gets res and it can be hard to get :)
hi! Not too sure about graduate student housing... most of it is for undegrads if I understand correctly. You should ask on reddit.com/r/UBC , I'm sure someone there knows better than I do! As for cat-friendly.... I don't think so. Pets aren't allowed in residence unless they're emotional support animals, or service animals. I think your best bet is to find off-campus housing that's just really close to the university! lots of people do that!
I liked different things about both! I liked the layout of my apartment in Gage wayyy better than the one in Ponderosa, and it was more convenient for taking transit because the bus loop is a tiny walk away. But the amenities in ponderosa were better: the study room at the top, having it's own gym for residents only, more people living in the specific building I was in, etc.
Arthur 94 and I think some first years might also get assigned to Gage (5 roommates + yourself). But yes! After first year you’ll be able to apply to other residences like Ponderosa, Thunderbird, and Gage Apartments :)
Hi! Here are the fees for the residence complex I was at: vancouver.housing.ubc.ca/applications/fees-payments/walter-gage/ mine was the "Apartments - Studio" - so around 1200 a month!
all the fees for the residences are up online! here are the ones for gage: vancouver.housing.ubc.ca/applications/fees-payments/walter-gage/ mine would be "apartment-studio"
Hi there, Interesting video. My niece, an international student from India, has been admitted to UBC Vancouver as an undergrad in the Arts department. I would really appreciate it if you could help us pick a residence hall for her. Being an international student, she would like to stay with other first year students. Ideally with students who are pursing a liberal arts major. The options available to us are as follows: Fraser Hall (FH) | Iona House (IH) | Marine Drive (MD) | Ponderosa Commons (PC) | Thunderbird (TB) | Brock Commons (BC) | Exchange (EX). Would really appreciate your thoughts. Many thanks
Kpop Times no worries!! There’s also a printer in residence and in the libraries that you can use :) but I found that investing in a printer was pretty good! Good luck getting in :)
@@kpoptimes5826 I didn't! But I think Orchard is the best! I have a video of that one cuz my sister moved in! It's the newest residence building so it's super nice
thank you!! Hi! Here are the fees for the residence complex I was at: vancouver.housing.ubc.ca/applications/fees-payments/walter-gage/ mine was the "Apartments - Studio" - so around 1200 a month!
It varies based on residence and what kind of room/apartment you're assigned to! Here's the fees for Walter Gage Residence (mine was the Apartments- Studio Fees): vancouver.housing.ubc.ca/applications/fees-payments/walter-gage/ but you can click on any of the residences on the left side bar to see how much those ones are!
Hey Lina, love your videos. I’m going in my second year at UBC this year. Recently made a RU-vid channel 6 months ago as a creative outlet. Would love if you’d check it out thanks xoxo goodluck with the upcoming year
