I would be interested to see a comparison/contrast with buying the components individually (AP, switch, CloudKey, gateway). What do we give up by going with the integrated system? Do we gain anything?
I do not think you loose anything. This box beats today's product line from Ubiquiti Unifi in everything. It's fast with all security turned ON. It just don't look PRO, and it will not fit in a rack.
same here. at this point they should just release a micro rack case to house the components, frosted tempered glass and front touch screen to manage locally.
The "TP-Link 5-Port Gigabit Desktop PoE Switch with 4-Port POE ports" are very good for adding some POE for the AP's and at around $60CDN Its a great option if you just need a few POE ports.
@@angelbabyluvsyou Ubiquiti has an 8-port 60 W switch and 4 of them are PoE. The point remains that the Dream Machine should have had PoE - to remain all in one box solution
Thanks Willie! Anyway to do a video on replacing existing USG and cloud key with UDM on a LAN with 192.168.2.x address. I would like to bring my existing controller config to this ( ips/dpi , firewall rules, blocked ips etc)
This is what I am curious about. How would you use unifi protect in this situation? Would you need to buy a seperate cloud key2? Does it support just plugging in a G3 cam?
+1 for an in depth look at the security features. But I’d also like to see more on the IPv6 management side, as everyone else ignores this. Presumably you can still (carefully!!) drop in JSON files to customise things not in the GUI?
Are we talking about the local UniFi controller? If so, I believe that using a verified certificate for a local IP would be troublesome, considering that local IPs can be the same across multiple networks, unlike external IPs. If you hosted the controller in the cloud, I could understand doing this, however locally it seems a bad idea, and most likely not beneficial. If we're talking about the controller in general, most end users will most likely have it hosted on their own network, so the need for this integration might not be a high priority.
Can you comment on the fan noise? A lot of people complain about a high fan noise with some options turned on or with downloading huge files with high speed. Some people claim they only hear it when it first boots up
From Uni-Fi Tech Support - No battery for safe shutdown on the UDM - The backup is stored on the UDM itself which you can download by connecting it through WinSCP, FileZilla etc. The backup is stored under /usr/lib/unifi/data/backup/autobackup. (Make sure you have auto-backup enabled in the controller). The UDM has internal storage to save the backup. - UDM doesn't have a power backup like Cloud Key Gen2. - You can't use one UDM as the main gateway if you have multiple UDM in the network. Instead, you can have one UDM in the network and then add UniFi APs to extended the network.
Willy, I’m a Unifi user - USG, cloud key, Switch 8 60W and three UAPs. Prior to Unifi, for a few months I had a Netgear Orbi system and before that, an Apple Airport base station with Airport Expresses for basic mesh. What I would like to know is: can the dream machine sit in a convenient location near an internet entry point, to be wired to one or two APS in other rooms to create a mesh or distributed system similar to my USG and UAPs? If so, this means the UDM could be a starter device, to be built upon as time and money becomes available. Secondly, how does it rank in terms of price, performance and capability alongside the traditional Unifi setup like mine? Willy, great work. Please keep it up. Most enjoyable and informative as usual.
Thank you for sharing this. This is really a dream machine. I want to hopefully get into UBNT products in the future a little poor haha, but I love the concept and idea of this machine a lot. I hope to see more even maybe some the basics how to. I think you will find with Dream Machine being so new that more people who never played with UBNT products will be searching for videos with the Dream Machine in the title, etc. Might be worth going through anything and everything overtime I think your channel will grow because this new product line. Once your done send me your UDM
Thanks for the video. Since the ck/controller is built-in and there is no backup battery, is it susceptible to data corruption in an event of a power loss or has ubiquity solved that? Maybe you could confirm with ubiquity or try it yourself lol.
Hi Willie, love your show. Had a question for you.; I want to clear the internal storage of the standard UDM and was hoping you could do a walk through on it? I know there is a new ssd with the newer UDMR - hoping you could help with that… even maybe how to wipe the controller clean; like it was never used before. That is what I’m looking for and I love RU-vid content creators for their assistance with that. Could you help and create something like that for your viewers?
A couple questions: 1. Can you block URLs since most home routers allow this and this is targeted as a super-charged SOHO router/wireless product? 2. If I'm a service provider and have 5 clients with this device, that means I will need to setup 5 accounts and manage them individually?
Hello. Could you make thid test : if internet does not work, would I still be able to login to the unifi using 2fa ? ie is the authent managed locally ?
Interesting device, and since I'll probably be setting up a network for my parents in the next few months, it could be timely. The all-in-one configuration will definitely make installation simpler, but it also means I can't replace parts of the system piecemeal, which has historically been a big strength of the UniFi product line. Curious to know if the UbOS is anything different that what they already have on, e.g., the CloudKey--the few screens you showed didn't indicate any difference. Compared to a USG + UAP-AC-Lite + Switch 8 POE 60W, this is a little cheaper, definitely simpler to install, but locks you into some things you may not want (you must use ubnt's SSO, you must use 2FA (don't understand your enthusiasm about this in a LAN-only environment), can't manage remotely). How does performance of the built-in USG compare with the standalone USG?
I live in an apartment complex where we get free gigabit internet, but in order to use the internet you have to add the mac address to your router, or laptop mac address if you plug directly to the wall before your device will connect to the internet. I have already added my dream machine mac address, but when I try to do the setup, it still will not connect to the internet and fails at the speed test any ideas what I can try? Thank you in advance. trying to get this set up before work tonight since I work for a medical service and have to work from home.
Thx for the video Willie. The UDM looks awesome and I'd like to know if you have any ability to manage the internet throughput or bandwidth that wired devices consume because I can't do this on my USG currently. Also extending the wireless network with APs. Pity the switch ports are not POE.
This is an excellent question. When I raised this with Ubiquiti support over a year ago they said they were working on it for the USG but haven't heard anything since.
I just got a UDM after using a Unifi HD, and had nothing but trouble, all my smart home stuff has gone crazy, on and off line, some things I just can't get back on line, please help, any info would be massively appreciated
with Dream machine, How can I setup so the ISP router is setup as a DHCP server and the UDM is a passthru and assigns the IP address provided by the ISP router?
Would like to see vpn speed test. Does IPS slow it down? Can you attach/adopt other unifi switches and access points? Can ports on the built in switch be aggregated?
If you are a freelance technician setting it up for your client, how do you pass over setup and configuration easily from your own ubiquiti account to another ubiquiti account, say either the owner or another technician with out having to back up and restore, etc. This is something I have wondered about with regular UniFi as well. I know there are steps to transferring the UniFi site, although I have never done it myself. Is there some easy transfer tool that I am missing?
hi Willie good morning. at the end after much evaluation and discussions i really think I will be getting the UDM! Iwill be installing it downstream from my ISP router (not modem) and my ISP router is giving the range 192.168.1.x/24 which is the same as the UDM!! is there a way to connect to the UDM before connecting the WAN (ISP router) to internet and change the class of IP range on the ethernet port of the UDM?
I would want to know if you can add additional ssid the way you normally do, how adding the beacons works, can you add a normal ubnt access point, can you have multiple AP groups like you can on the normal controller?
You cant manage this form a controller I installed on my PC, I want to make sure I understand you correctly. I was only able to control on phone and logging into the dream machine. Sorry new to Ubiquiti. Like your videos !
is there a way to just manually pick a channel for your network? I see a way to exclude certain channels, or to enable auto optimization -- but can i just tell my UDM which channel to use?
A couple questions if I may. Since this has a cloud key built in, will this work with ubiquitis cameras if there is a POE switch hooked up? Also, do you know if this will work with ubiquitis AmpliFi HD mesh router? Their mesh router has a built in VPN that you can use while you are on a public Wi-Fi system to send your data through your home network. Thanks and have a great day
Hi Willie. Insightful video as always. Would be interested to know if this supports guest networks, VLANs and what VPN options there are? This would be a great device to install at an directors/executives home and be managed by their businesses' internal IT dept
Good Vid Willie; I am super surprised they didnt toss a 2TB mechanical hard drive and bake in Unifi Protect into this thing. Im not saying I am in love with Unifi protect, Im just surprised they didnt do it.
Ok, settings this device offers aside, this or the new Nest WiFi? I’ve been waiting for the Dream Machine but I worry about it’s WiFi performance compared to mesh systems. And this router is designed for the home as well as small office. What’s it like for gaming and 4K streaming?
I need help!! I upgraded my controller firmware and now I can’t access it via the app or my UniFi SSO Account site. What can I do to access the controller again?
many thks for this vid ! when you define you firewall rules, do you make any difference between the udm lan ports of the internal network and the other switches defined in the same network (vlan...} ?
Willie would you do a Dream Machine for beginners that’s me I know nothing about networking just want to setup my dream machine that in my bedroom closet with an external access point in the den. Also want to put all my security cameras on their own vertical network. Can you please help a beginner. Thank you for all your great videos.
I have to say, a device like this was missing from UniFi, but... some of the things... WTF? While it does make sence, to deny multisite controll on this (after all, it's cloudkey combined with a firewall... single tarkget to hack, instead of two). Can't adopt it to another controller? Seriously? I see an application for this, where adoption in to existing controller would have been very useful! I am one of very few people on my street, who actually know's something about networking and I have a cloud key. I could have had them as clients, becoming payed tech support! Or another application, allow the controller to be turned of, if the device were to be turned in to AP/Switch combo only, and install it in production enviroment, where there is some need for WiFi, but also necesity for a switch! For instance, in a small company, that has a couple of CNC devices in a workshop, and going for 8 port would have been too much (like single workbench and three CNC mills). I have seen so many such cmall companies, that had to go for 8 port switches and separate overkill APs, just to get Wi-Fi to work in areas, with little to no chanel congestion and very small ammount of data transfer. Whoever came up with this device had the right idea, but executed on it poorly... If these changes were applied and perheaps higher end variant with AF PoE were introduced, this could be very successful device in my oppinion, but as it stand's now, It's a child... A lot of promise, but a lot of work needed to raise it.
looseycanon it’s designed for homes and small businesses per Ubiquiti marketing. The issues you’ve mentioned are significantly outside the scope of this devices intended purpose. As Ubiquiti calls it, this is a “prosumer” device. On the other hand, I absolutely agree those would be good improvements.
Just got mine, and after hearing all the hype, I though I had got the next best thing ever, but major disappointing, signal strength not a far range as my Unifi HD, please the 2ghz just keeps dropping off, and keeps telling me the password is wrong when its not, please help before this ends up in the bottom of my pool, thx
Why would I have this over something like a Fritz!Box 7590? Isn't the point of Ubiquiti to NOT have everything in one device, but each thing in a separate, specialized device? But then again, this does not even have a modem inside, right?
Beyond the obvious simplicity of this is there any reason this is better than buying a USG, switch, and access point? The two reasons I can see going for separate devices (I think the price would be about the same from what I remember) is the ability to get a PoE switch and the ability to adopt to another controller. Another reason is if you want your access point located separately from the rest of the equipment.
Platypi007 I enjoy having full 5GHz coverage in my 1,600 sq ft house. Completely overkill but just how I like it. 3 APs total: UAP AC Pro in living room, UAP AC Lite in both bedrooms. Debating on upgrading to an EdgeRouter 4 for higher throughout with Smart Queues, compared to my current USG 3P.
First off great video! Do have a question though. Can you still clone a MAC address on the UDM and then put a config.gateway.json file in /srv/unifi/data/sites/default/ (my current cloudkey location) to keep it after reboots? It works great on my USG and Cloudkey I have now to remove the need to use my AT&T gateway.
I was thinking about putting this in a small office since it would be a cheaper than upgrading their whole system. Do you happen to know what the coverage area is for the AP? Is the range as good as the AC Pro?
Ubiquiti really dropped the ball with this thing. No more config.gateway.json and layer 3 adoption makes this unsupportable in an enterprise capacity. Sure does give linksys and net gear a run but even those things can handle openvpn. What a shame.
@ 02:05 "IPS / IDS and DPI that outperform any of the current UBNT hardware". That's just plain rude bullcrap from UBNT who then clearly have stopped working on the USG's other so-called Enterprise gear and focused on a home-only product.
Not really, there will be a udm pro (prosumer). There will probably be a standalone black one as well (other ubiquiti line, edgerouter) still, it is indeed a bit annoying
Most people are going for this IPS / IDS capabilities. Can you do In depth video about setup and what information comes back and what it means. I.e what is a threat and what is not?
