It is almost like any criticism can be answered with 2 questions. Do you think that a game set in a country must ALL have main characters with that nationality? (Remember, arguing MOST is a fucking stupid argument because you admit that some games won't....in which case this game falls there. And even then we got a second main character who would fall into your complain) Do you think the game with a super powered pope and Karl Marx is historically accurate (or is trying to) or is it more likely that it is using history to tell its own story? If you genuinely answer those almost all arguments make no sense. "But Yasuke isn't real!" - Firstly don't just take sources from twitter dude who is consistently bias in drama, there are multiple accounts he definitely was, although at what level of retainer to Oda he was we aren't sure. "He wasn't a samurai!" - And? Second question, this game was never meant to be historically accurate, they can change the history to fit into the story they want to tell, how many white dude in a foreign land stories have you happily consumed. Why is this the thing that makes you mad? "But Japanese Game Japanese MC!" - First question, also other MC is a Japanese ninja, who are well known in Japan The best argument against Yasuke is that it is probably tokenism. But even then if I am forced to write a character there is still THE WRITING THE CHARACTER PART, if I am forced to add a character to my story, I can still just make that character well written in which case why do you care? Because most cases arent? Let's ignore that you wouldn't notice when good cases happen because that is how good writing works, the game isn't out so why complain now?
@@TheKastellan i don't think the black mc is a bad idea because it's an interesting idea based on a real person, BUT, you know damn well the ac writers are not gonna do the concept justice
To be honest - with the whole AC angle, I never really took what the games did as 'true' historical accuracy. As another commentor said, instead of being upset by the disingenious 'history' in the game, be upset by the pricing and how they're paywalling certain contents of the game. With that, I'm a huge history nerd. I LOVE history and everything that encompasses it, but I also know that games like AC aren't a true reflection of what actually happened. What they have done for me though is inspire me to get into the history surrounding the timelines the games take place in. Often times, I've found my ability to engage with said history alot more fun because I can recall it back to the games and create my own 'history' around it. If people aren't really able to do some critical thinking and utilise their common sense, that's sorta on them.
The first game even had a scene with Desmond and Warren talking about the discrepancies between recorded history and what the animus was showing Desmond. Don't forget there is a resource boost in the ultimate pack meaning the game they are selling pre-orders for that we haven't even seen gameplay of, will also contain yet again boosters. The only thing I'd say is accurate about the series is how accurate the buildings are. When Notre Dame burned back in 2019, they used Assassin's Unity to help rebuild it because of how accurate the detail was.
Exactly, taking liberties should be done if it’s in service of a great story to be told, I think it would be pretty boring if in God of War Kratos never kills any gods for accuracy
They are historically accurate that in the sense that different actual events still tended to happen when they happened and people aren't moved around in history often and are usually within their respective time frames and are still relatively how they are portrayed in most media or in history unless they are meant to be an assassin or templar. My biggest gripe is why the fuck are we playing as a real person all of the sudden? Like nah mate we haven't done that shit before for the main story assassin so why the fuck are we doing this now.
Whats even worst about the Assassins Creed game is apparently the depiction of Fuedal Japan is a weird mixture of different Asian cultures from different era's. It appears there was little effort in researching Fuedal Japan during production.
Ah yes, assassins creed the pioneers of historical events just like DaVinci planned tank actually becoming real, and the pope fending off assassins 😂. Suddenly accuracy is important lol
@@MaxBlightdidn't y'all say that about yasuke whenever people say stuff about him? But now your saying that about Ubisoft being historically accurate? Lmao
Story of Yasuke. Random black slave ended up in Japan, I don't remember why. Makes a living selling stuff and he is seen by Nobunaga Oda for his large stature. He believes he is a dirty and asks him to be washed. When he realizes its his actual skin is that color. He hires him on as a retainer (BodyGuard). Large intimidating man of color roughly 5'10, when a majority of the population at the time is just under 5'6. Yeah I would hire the big scary looking man to protect me. Basic story of the "Black samurai."
yeah, people keep making an argument that yasuke was a giant man who gained respect for his immense size, when the reality is at most he would of been like 6 foot, and he was only kept around by nobunaga because he found yasukes dark skin to be hilarious, at best yasuke was a sideshow act nobunaga liked keeping around edit: thats all he was, at best he was respected because nobunaga found him funny
@@speckysteven He was considered Bushi(Officially recognized warrior). All samurai were Bushi but not all Bushi were Samurar. However, Yasuke did get some of the same benefits Samurai had since Bushi had similar benefits. Private residence, financial stipends, and the recognize status of carrying arms. More likely he was a Bushi than a Samurai.
The amount of drama these last few weeks is insane, like people should just chill out and drink a cup of tea or something instead of creating confrontation online.
They would rather live a fake life online instead of focusing on their actual life... Also Tyson said it the best : "Social media made y'all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it."
I'll say after listening to people on both sides & friends of mine, mostly black people cause I wanted their opinion most, I've come to the same conclusion, in the end his skin tone doesn't really matter, doesn't take away from the fact that Japanese people have every right to be outraged about this & I agree with the take that if they want to sue like Egypt did, then I'm all for it, what is the real problem is the prices, 70 for a game with stuff cut out, 110 for the base game & 130 for the full experience, which they're only doing to sell their Ubisoft+ for 17.99 a month that gives you everything the 130 has, I still do want to play the game, but I'm hesitant after SSKTJL. I also think adding LGBTQ into the past part of the game is wrong, nothing against them I have quite a bit of family members I love in the group & I might be Asexual myself (don't know still trying to figure out) which my cousin said makes sense cause of my Autism (not sure how though) but trying to make a black guy that was most likely straight guy is bad & there's other problems.
There's a Historian RU-vidr (Metatron) who detailed on AC Shadows. so... Was there a Black Man in Japan? Yes. Was his name Yasuke? Not really. Was He a Samurai? Not officially. Was He a Warrior? Yes, he was considered a Bodyguard of sorts, specially for his Height and Size. Did he contribute to Japanese History? Yes... a Bit. Was he a Slave? Yes, he was brought to Japan as a slave along with others in 1570's. Was he a Good Historical Figure to be used by Ubisoft? No, Several of Samurai in Japans' History specially during Edo period to mid-Meiji were far more significant. Was the Price of the game Justified? No, Fuck no, AC Syndicate was the last one I bought, I pirated Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla and I will the next generation of U-been-soft games.
A couple of things, first of all, I have no idea why they thought it was a good idea to make the claim that they don't believe he was a slave that's just such a weird thing to not buy or think could be likely true. Secondly, as is very evident they don't care about historical accuracy. That's not what these games are about. Just not true in any way shape or form. They chose him because obviously a black samurai in this setting would be extremely interesting and cool which it is.

The thing about the AC drama that makes it funny, is that all of the people saying that "it's not historically accurate, they can do what they want" and "it's fiction" etc etc, would 100% complain about racism if they made an AC game based in Africa with a British MC
Actually, the black samurai is an actual historical Japanese figure, his name was Yasuke, he was a slave from Africa that was brought to the warlord Nobunaga Oda and, seeing his potential, Nobunaga bought him and made him one of his attendant at his side and enlisted Yasuke into his army.
@@ErrorCreedyea i think its fair to take creative liberties with your story and change him from just being conscripted to be a full on samurai, but in real life that is a title that is bestowed upon those who have earned it or a title you are born into so unless it is documented somewhere he was given that title then the fact is he wasnt so it feels kinda wrong for people to act like somebodies bad or racist for feeling like they dont want to see a story that isnt accurate or real

8:30 That "3 Day Early Access" is a company's way to get some bug testing done before the actual launch of the game. You are actually paying the company to bug test their game for them before it is globally released so that they don't get shit on in the reviews like they normally do
I have also heard the 3 days early could also be the actual launch date of a game and everyone who preorders more expensive version of the game is paying to play it on time. Just something I could see being true
Trust me. The three day "early access" isn't bug testing. It takes time for an update to be reviewed before it can be rolled out. Three days is not enough time to take the feedback, work upon it to then test if the update doesn't make things worse, submit the update to be approved by Management/Publisher/Platform and then implemented for players to update. It's just a marketing ploy to get people who fear spoilers, can't wait, reviewers who weren't approved, and streamers/youtubers wanting to cover it as soon as possible, to pay more money.
The injustices we have in the west pale compared to those in other areas of the world yet no one seems to care about ethic cleansings in Africa, in Haiti, the middle east, southeast and east asia, etc. So people saying "why don't people care about racial injustice more than a videogame" don't really care about actual racial and ethnic crime that makes what we are up against in the west pale in comparison. If they did we'd hear about it instead of petty shit like how a white WNBA player is getting a lot of attention.

Naoe really is the stealthiest character in Assassin's creed history, she blows every other main-line assassin out of the water, so stealthy in fact that even Nogla and Terroriser didn't notice that she's the protagonist of Shadows! For real though, I'm really tired of hearing "Why is it a Black protagonist in Japan, the protag should be Japanese" because SHE IS, THERE ARE TWO PROTAGONISTS. Yasuke is a historical figure with more than a "2 minutes of reading" to him, you can literally 15+ references to the actual him in literature between 1900 and 2020, and between the 1960's and now he's been in (directly or a fictionalized reference like we will see in AC:Shadows) 50+ decently well known games, movies, plays and Anime (Nioh, Momoyama Beat Tribe, Kurosuke, [i have tried to find a direct quote from the creator but failed as of yet, however it is noted in multiple places that he is also part of the inspiration for] Afro samurai, etc). Just pretending he's not part of Japanese culture, and that actual Japanese people are upset because of the dislike ration of the Japanese trailer (Note that a vast majority of comments you'll see are either in english, or when translated say "im from taiwan, and" or "as a chinese person I", etc, meaning its really not a valid metric to gauge) is just stupid man. The TNN is fun to watch since I know about a lot of " news" in this video, but here is something that you either missed or wasn't in the video still regardless you need to know. Basically, to make Yasuke seem like a Samurai, his entire wikipedia page was changed multiple times and it was honestly, insane to witness, people were going out of their way to edit actual history to support a multi-billion dollar company and their vision.
I think the whole debate on whether or not Yasuke was an actual samurai and all the misinformation flying around just highlights how people are willing to believe anything without doing ANY actual research themselves on the matter. While we'll likely never know for 100%, everything I've read (Mainly from Ōta Gyūichi's "Shinchō Kōki", AKA "Lord Nobunaga Chronicle") hints towards him being an actual samurai, he received a stipend, a private residence, and an decorated sword. People seem to be under the impression that all samurai were professional soldiers, when infact they were in large part just retainers and land holders whom didn't necessary need to have any actual combat experience whatsoever.
it's so sad I had to scroll to the bottom to find someone who actually read a book 😭😭😭 You're 100% right, it's nuanced as we really don't have alot of information, most academics believe there is good indication he was but because the words "we made the black one a samurari" don't appear people try and say he was objectively and factually not a samurari. Yasuke story is short with almost no information and people who don't understand how history should be viewed spread their opinions like it's fact.
Samurai was a social class. A peasant in Medieval Europe could recieve many such mentioned rewards and still never become a noble. Yasuke also only stayed in Japan for a few months. You're telling me he learnt Japanese and became an important and high ranking member of society in that short time frame? Yeah no. He was a weapons retainer and bodyguard to Nobunaga (and at times an exotic object to show off) but it is highly unlikely he was a samurai.

What's even more wild was how the Japanese saw Yasuke. In a letter by Akechi sama. He outright says "He is akin to a beast(Monster) and does not know Japanese." For the 16 short months he was there, he was only written about in the shape of 14 lines. That's all.

No dude, they've never made a samurai game ever. That's why people are outraged, the first ever samurai game ever created has a black guy as protagonist...
Amazing game, and I loved every second of it. The feeling of playing as a Samurai with different sword styles was fun. The story was emotional and beautiful, and Jin is an amazing protagonist.
To clear up some confusion. 1) AC games are known for being historically inaccurate (e.g. Scifi crap), so it doesn't really matter that much if there's like a black main character or even an alien (granted there are AC games that are historically accurate kinda). 2) Yasuke is indeed part of Japanese history, and he did became a samurai (based on current sources) for like a year. 3) Yasuke isn't the only main character you can play in the new AC game, there's an alternate Japanese main character you can play if you don't like Yasuke. 4) People should be mad at the game's quality and pricing , rather than Yasuke.
Nah, there's a black guy in Japan, it MUST be accurate 😂. When they misrepresented the sons of ragnar and magically connected all the gods and religions there's no problem... but black guy in Japan, that's when we ready the pitch forks and the mobs getting ready to make sure everything is accurate.
@@MaxBlight "It is known to many scholars that da Vinci made WMDs during the year 1512" - Abraham Lincoln (circa 1980). But yep. 20:30 I don't know if other countries have something similar, but, in the United States we have something call the the "Statute of Limitations" in which you can not be charge for most crimes past after a certain time period (I think it's around 5 years but I could be wrong). Things like murder are obviously exempt from the this but some violent crimes are not.
Would you imagine that? It's almost as if they have no idea what they're talking about and yet injecting their opinion again as if anyone asked or as if they have any reason to be doing so.
They don't actually play the AC games. If they did, they would've known AC stopped being "historically accurate" a decade ago. From aliens to connecting multiple religions. But bringing a black person into it who actually existed is where the line is drawn. Honestly should know by now they don't know what they're talking about. This whole series is for them to rant on and give their unnecessary opinions on hot topics with no background information.
I get Brians point about like Japanese heritage and having the chance the show it off, but the game has 2 main charachters and one of em IS Japanese?? How has that not been mentioned? Come on man there's gotta be some internalized racism and sexism going on there
That whole heritage nonsense completely falls flat. If you think about it for more than 5 seconds. Japanese people and that time period specifically have been in so many TV shows movies and games and are so widely loved by the world. At this point it's like bro this one not historically accurate game being different from literally a game that came out not that long ago. Ghosts of tsushima is not a problem. As a woman, my "rage" is handled just fine with therapy and church. I've never been "shamed" for having emotions. I have, however, been taught to keep my emotions under control for my own good and the good of others. If you let rage stew inside you so much that you need to scream, it poisons you (metaphorically), impacting the way you view everything and everyone else. The same can be said for most negative emotions. So I don't let it stew. I resolve it. When I was a kid I talked with my mom. As I grew older, I had some bigger issues, so I sought out a good therapist. I wasn't seeing my therapist for anger, though occasionally I brought it up when I had a particular problem. I think an actual therapist (a good therapist, not one who just affirms everything about you, but one who gives you tools to be better and challenges you) is worth the occasional expense, and much more useful than a "rage ritual." That's not gonna solve your problems. It might make you feel a bit better for a small amount of time, but nothing is actually fixed. You're gonna be back at that "ritual," or something else, sooner or later, spending even more money. With a therapist, if you actively work on your issues, eventually you don't see them as often, or at all, if you're doing well (I haven't seen my therapist in over a year). Then it's no longer an expense. Don't be frivolous with your money, people. Also, don't buy into bullcrap "fixes" for your psyche if you actually have issues. Yeah, therapy takes longer, and you have to actually work at it. But as the saying goes, "Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast." You'll get your issues resolved more quickly, and probably more permanently, if you take the slow and steady approach.

You know I don't think most people would have a problem with wanting to make a story about Yasuke because they thought he was interesting. I think where most people have a problem is that Ubisoft didn't pick him because they thought he was interesting, they picked him because he was black.
I mean, the game is set to take place during the end of the Sengoku period, which coincides with the time as to when Yasuke was under the employ of Oda Nobunaga. The game also has a Japanese protagonist in Naoe. Yasuke's not the only protagonist. They also stated that one of their primary reasoning to make him a main character is to tie Oda to the Portuguese that he arrives with. It's likely that they are tied to the Templar/Order of the Ancients since their ships have the Templar Order and the trailer reveals that he was part of the attack on Naoe's village (which seems to be a village primarily inhabited by Shinobis and could be the Japanese branch of the Creed).

This video honestly made me really upset, not only do people mostly focus on the Yasuke character and forget about Naoe, the other main character who is Japanese. But the fact that Nogla and Terroriser took an approach that made it seem like its a problem that one of the main characters, who is a historical figure and was a retainer for Oda Nobunaga, is a worse choice over a Japanese character. Yasuke while being a different race followed the samurai code and was treated the same as all the other samurai, the same way the Creed in the old games had a code that was followed. I do hope in the future they do more research, because I have been following these guys since 2014 and I love their content but this almost hurt to watch
The fact that they felt like they could make this video without seemingly knowing that information is so wild. Imagine having such a strong take. But having no clue what you're talking about. Once again, them doing the exact same thing, they claim. They don't like and are apparently above doing even though they're blatantly not I don't know why they felt they need to talk about this because seriously who asked.
@@RLHvanDijk I feel like that would be a wild thing to omit from this conversation plus if I'm going to be perfectly honest the way they were talking does not make me think they knew that fact at all.
@@RLHvanDijk If I'm going to be perfectly honest. I might argue. That that's actually worse, because it means that their rhetoric is coming more so from a malicious point of view then just coming from an ignorant point of view.
ok you guys are acting weird for this one, the black samurai sure okay, be mad with that, but the other character is literally Japanese so that's a shit argument to say if there is a game based in Japan, there should be a Japanese lead character, guess what, there is...
20:14 And here we see Brian's genuine reaction to finding out that there's such a thing as statute of limitations. I only remember the term because of Law and Order, also Legal Eagle might've mentioned this before.
Brian hit the NAIL ON THE HEAD. Yes, he was a slave brought over from Africa to feudal Japan. They said instead of wasting this man’s potential with menial physical labor, we must train him to be THE BEST samurai, given his height and stature. And thus, the story of Yasuke, the first black samurai. (No, not in Ubisoft lore, THIS IS A REAL PERSON IN HISTORY. LOOK IT UP BEFORE YOU JUST GO “MAN I HATE SEEING BLACK PEOPLE IN GAMES.” And let’s think about what that means for a sec,” Japanese people should be in a Japanese game.” Does that not sound MORE racist than anything? Ok, by that logic, black people should be in black people games, white people should be in white people games, so on. That makes NO sense, because at the end of the daaaaaaaay, THEYRE VIDEO GAMES
@@lgchamp1999 They really don't. That's not even addressing the fact that you literally play as someone that can survive falling into a haystack from a 100-foot drop or how they can somehow not dislocate their shoulders every time they grab a ledge from afar. It's always been historical fiction. They stay as close as possible to the real-life events and reconstruct the architecture of every setting the game takes place at, but they take huge creative liberties to tie the events to the each of the games' plot.
I will get hate or bullshit over this but to be honest Idgaf yasuke was a real black Samurai people try to beat around the bush or some shit by calling him a retainer which is true he was but so was all Samurai they all severd under a fedual lord. It just so happens that yasuke severd under oda nobunaga. There are people online who have been trying to alternate Wikipedia articles and trying to claim them as a source proving that he wasn't a Samurai arguing with legitimate Japanese people who can trace their heritage back to actual Samurai. But, if people paid more attention to the trailer they would know that their is a Japanese main character but that doesn't get attention so people will argue over sticks and fucking stones.
Exactly! Naoe, and the way the game is described it sounds like it's inspired by AC Syndicate. I say sounds because they are selling pre-orders for a game we haven't gotten a gameplay trailer for.
@@ClimaxChainsaw Hey, Afro samurai was awesome but I never considered him to be part of the japanese culture... I can't even date a Japanese woman because I know her parents would be prejudice asf.
So, you mean people are complaining ridiculously about one of the most popular and famous times in history that have been adapted into so many different things. It's kind of overwhelming, so basically. In other words, it's not something to complain about at all, and it's ridiculous completely and utterly. It's just being sensitive and crying about it, but apparently because they're Asian? It's okay when somebody is crying very strange has absolutely 0 intellectual consistency.
