Housing in Ireland continues to be a headline topic across the media as more people feel the dream of owning a home seems ever out of financial reach.
With a younger generation unable to afford a property of their own and another older generation facing an impending insecure retirement paying rent, what’s the reality behind the headlines and what we can do to make a change?
Social Democrat TD and UCD Alumni Cian O’Callaghan, Michelle Norris, Director, at the Geary Institute for Public Policy at UCD and Aidan Regan, Associate Professor, UCD School of International Politics and Relations will appear in conversation.

Government needs to put a limit on the number of properties that can be owned by a person, they need to stop allowing these investment funds from buying up all the new housing, and they need to set caps on rent bringing the market price down a huge amount from where it currently stands

More than 50% of rent is accounted for by government TAX. Then there is property tax, RTB charges, insurance, maintenance, management fees in apartment blocks are around €3,000 a year. So don’t worry there won’t be any small landlords.

This is the prime example when the so called market does not and cannot control itself (plus some deliberate interference, corruption and goverment incompetence). All the rest is bullsh.t and making excuses. The market in such situations must be directly regulated and governments must interfere directly. This is a country with one of the highest GDP in the EU. It's sad and ridiculous at the same time.

The answer is simple. Build 'temporary housing' for the time being until more permanent housing can be built. The large engineering and construction companies can easily do this quickly. For example, when we built the Sadara chemical complex in the middle of the Saudi Arabian desert, we created 'an entire temporary city'. This could be done in 6-9 months on a massive scale. They are thinking FAR too SMALL. It's time to think BIG and BOLD.

You're spot on , but they won't cos they don't want too y I just don't know maybe if they built lots of housing the price would go down so by not building keeps the demand high and prices even higher

It doesn’t matter if it was better or worst before. It shouldn’t be the discussion. We need houses now and think about the future. The lady sounds obsessed with her parents house 😂

The Planning Ayatollahs in alliance with speculating, big-time housing entrepreneurs are the root cause of the low supply of affordable houses and toxic prices/rents. Stop blocking ordinary people from getting Planning Permission for a house of their own on their own modest plot of land!!! Ordinary, hard-working Irish people don't need housing providers - neither in the form of private, unbridled Big Player entrepreneurs, nor in the form of Nanny State, "cradle to grave" home building entrepreneurs. They need freedom from a tyrannical, overly restrictive, biased Planning dictatorship, and decent freedom to be their own home-building entrepreneurs. Other EU countries have, to a certain extent, managed to give its ordinary citizens such freedoms and sovereignty in being their own home entrepreneurs, and that's the main reason their housing situations are so much better.

eeemm...smiling about we should all rent like germany?...germany has rent caps and very strict rental agreements that mostly favour the renter unlike here.Secondly why should their be more government bodies set up to facilitate prospective buyers to buy into an already over-inflated market? isnt that just throwing away money? i'm just a joe soap, but it seems to me that the market is the problem, being hyper inflated by the hedgefunds buying up all existing stock and sitting on it.It has an odour of the diamond market.....hoard and dont sell or the value will drop.Unless i spot a pig flying overhead i very much doubt that will change and will be avoided by our political class like a tetanus shot.so i agree with aiden that more has to be done in terms of penal measures on land/property hoarders (not single property owners btw) who are playing the long game for profit and only profit. As far as i can see they only way to "fix" the problem is by flooding the market with public housing and so making it less profitable for large buyouts of irish housing for speculation. But that wont happen and its sad to say we are doomed as a society for the forseeable future with more jobs being lost to automation/ai in both manufactuering and service industries, it seems like the % of home ownership will fall drastically and homelessness will become the "norm".
