I like the idea of using the grill sideways to facilitate reloading of more wood. Very smart.

Must be pretty awesome knowing you have a fire pit neatly folded and packed away in your small backpack. That thing looks amazing for overnight fishing trips. Can throw a trout on there and fish for another as it cooks ;). I am going to order one. Was surprised they were so cheap. Thanks for the video! It was great!

Thank you for keeping me company in the forest. Just a quick canteen cup coffee to scratch the outdoor itch..i have both the UNIGEAR and the large UCO. I like both. But now seeing there is a small one I will get it!! That will actually get used!!! Great idea putting the grill on that way..it is hard to remove to feed fire..at least on my large one. Stay safe sir..as usual very much enjoy your videos..you look great..rested refreshed and healthy

I'm trying out the Sterno foldable box style grill that is used with the fuel canister, I also cut out a vegetable roaster sheet that sits on top of a regular charcoal grill with the hole in it so your vegetables don't fall through, and I attach that to the top of the sterno, seems to be working pretty good, I also modified the floor with a metal cooling rack so it has a raised bottom for airflow, only thing is I don't know how long it will last yet

These stoves look perfect for areas (like the Sawtooths in Idaho) that require a fire pan for backcountry campfires.

Hey MW. I'm a stove-a-holic myself. Probably have 20 or so. Wood, propane, butane or alcohol. I really like this one. Easy clean up has become a biggie w/me. For 1 or 2 people this looks great. It's packability and ease to load wood over 4-6 in long makes this one intriguing. Remove the grill and longer pcs will work great. Nice vid. ATB

I think I like the standard better too. But I think the mini is small enough to be an alternative to a lot of the smaller box style twig stoves which need feeding a lot. It's always going to be the bigger the fire the longer it lasts but obviously the heavier they are and the more wood they need. The mini seems good for it's size and weight.
@MegaWoodswalker
@MegaWoodswalker 5 лет назад
It's always a balancing act. The same applies to tent stoves. Small stove easier to pack. Larger stove more room for cooking, longer stoke times, more heat output and less wood prep (longer fuel means less cuts). But sometimes the weight and bulk are just too much hence the challenge. Thanks for watching!

If you place some hardware mesh/cloth elevated a bit in the bottom of he pan it will create much more draft resulting in a much better burn.

I can see where the larger one would be a great advantage when it’s a lot colder outside, being able to use it as a fire pit. The small one on the other hand, is definitely an excellent smaller lightweight stove. I’ve got my carbs down to almost nothing, hang in there, you’ll eventually get the DB down to manageable levels. So far, I’ve managed to keep my weight down. The one thumbs down, he’s probably eating sawdust rice.
@MegaWoodswalker

When it gets colder the larger one will be out on the trail for sure as a firepan. Thanks brother!

I'm a bit more inclined to use copper tube and stainless rods to fit together a grill over a metal can. Not sure if you did, but in case you don't know, some Dawn dish soap around the outside of the cookpot before cooking helps for cleaning after.

Hey Kevin, it’s Doug, and what am I going to say today? 😀 Good demo and review today on the grill/stove. After watching you work with it, I’m not sure I see the advantage of this one over its slightly larger cousin. Due to the latter ones’ larger cooking area, I believe that one gets my vote. Do you have a fav between the two? The Keto friendly meal had my attention, too, as I’m doing a Ketoesque diet at the moment to control my blood sugar issues...your combo looked very good to me!! Thanks much for the upload.
@MegaWoodswalker
@MegaWoodswalker 5 лет назад
The standard/large for sure. Odds are the Mini will probably get more use as it's smaller and more packable however larger is almost always better when it comes to wood stoves and this is true here as well.

Thanks! Great review, but I have one question. Do you think this will throw off enough BTU to keep a person warm when it's really cold and in a survival situation?
@MegaWoodswalker
@MegaWoodswalker 5 лет назад
If for some reason my access to wood was limited aka only a small amount under a tarp during bad weather or a hurt ankle sure as it's more efficient than a similar sized scout fire IMO. But based on my tarp/bivy winter camping a larger fire with nice coal base is better. I would make a BIG fire as that could even withstand rain.

@@MegaWoodswalker I'm going out on the AT for an overnighter tomorrow with my hammock and tarp. I'm taking my Firebox stove, some fatwood, tinder and a nalgene full of wood pellets. Probably won't need the wood pellets but they are nice to have when you want a quick, long lasting fire in a twig stove.

@MegaWoodswalker
@MegaWoodswalker 5 лет назад
I had 4 hot dogs on it with space left over so thinking yes though if the intent is cooking out more than longer range hiking the standard offers options like doing two things at once such heating a pot of beans & grilling burgers etc etc.

I was out for a day hike today. I'm sort of regretting purchasing my Kifaru EMR II a few years back. It's 13 pounds without any gear loaded. That's way too much. Used my firebox stove to cook up some Mountain House beef stew and Chicken with rice for me and my dog. The stove worked great. Do you know anyone who might want to buy a used EMR II with the tactical frame?

Hey Kevin, thanks for reviewing the Mini UCO. Do you think you would ever use it for backpacking on a multi-day trip?
@MegaWoodswalker
@MegaWoodswalker 5 лет назад
Yes it's doable though it would be hard to ignore my UL Ti stoves which are under 1/2 lb. However in a very sensitive area this is totally off the ground in a way only the biolite stoves can match.

AAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!! I still can't decide between the large version or the small. Just to be safe I think I will follow your path and get both. Maybe after using both I can say one is better than the other. Do I want less weight while spending more time feeding the flames??? Only way I can answer that is to field test both. In the larger stoves favor, besides less feeding time you have a larger footprint making ith less" tippy" and a larger area to cook on. But the little one is lighter. AAAAAAAAARRRGGGHHH!!!! I will someday let you know the results of my trial and error. As always Thank You Sir for sharing your lnowledge as well as equipment reviews!!
@mrwes100
@mrwes100 5 лет назад
Now I’m not sure which one I want. Kevin, did you feel you had to feed the mini a lot more often, like a twig stove?
@MegaWoodswalker
@MegaWoodswalker 5 лет назад
The mini takes more feeding etc than the large/standard. It wasn't sooo bad but the larger is better across the board in terms of performance. Build quality/materials looks identical. The only pro to the mini is bulk/weight but this is a BIG pro for some situations like long distance hikes or even a BOB/ER bag. However if that's not super important (overnighters/dayhikes/camping) get the standard/large.
