UDO SUPER6 VS PROPHET5 // How close can you get? 

I know, it’s got much more flexibility than most give it credit for. I’m thinking of doing something taking it out of the analog zone. I originally compared against the Jp6 as so many said it was based on it.. then it was better at doing P5. But overall it’s much better at being an S6!

Exactly. I want my prophet 10 to midi into the super 6 to control it to have the extra octave

@@StarskyCarr Yep, the Super 6 is the Super 6. I demoed one and now I'm getting my own. Really dig it for what it is in its own right.

Of course… forgot to mention that little trick. I was concentrating on modulating DDS2 which obviously wouldn’t be possible if it was silent. But yeah you can hear it on its own if you need it.

There's something special about the P5. Although the S6 can get close and identical at times, the P5 is such a nice board.

Surprised too! Yes, the P5 have som undefinable feel to it’s sound. Guess this shows the flexibility of S6

Pro One was a single voice of the Prophet 5, yes. Some say the Pro One had a bit more heft … and it’s typical to tune a monosynth such, so that would make sense. Horses bred for different courses.

One small note: while not strictly the same as the Vintage knob, Arturia has implemented per voice programmable modulation on the excellent PolyBrute. I encourage people to check out Creative Spiral's brilliant programming for that as well as other synths like the Rev 2. His work on both of those instruments is outstanding.

Not quite what your asking for at all but they now are making a module version of the Super 6. With an external keyboard can pick your desired octave range.

It was just a little ditty I made for this. I do it in most videos to show the synths being used in full, and it helps me to really get to grips with the pros and cons.

How do you turn of drift in super 6

The S6 pan spread firmware update would be a good update. I'd prefer that.

@@downpatmusic Good news, it came out last year. With binaural mode off, shift+LFO1 Phase controls the degree of pan spread. It doesn't zero out to full mono, but it gets much narrower than the default hardpan.

I wouldn't say these overlap that much tbh - I was trying to get similar stuff here, but you approach them in different ways. The Iridium is, however, super flexible with 5 different synth engines etc. It can get close to the M as well - but doesn't quite have the M's mojo. Check out my M vs Iridium comparison if you've not seen it already.

You think the Prophet 5 tracks better than the FPGA digital super 6 ??? I think your tracking is off!

of course, I'm showing what it does here, how it affects the sounds. its a knob not an on/off switch

and this typixal sounding is what make prophet so unique. reproducting the sounds you choised without a bit of this knob can be made by many devices and vst (repro5 for ex.).

i have a p5’ super6 is a good companion but it will not replace the p5

Super 6, look at session in schneidersladen at RU-vid, it's a great show up of the possibility.

There is something special about the Prophet that lifts it up. The Super 6 can get close and I think in a mix you’d be hard pushed to tell the difference. The big difference of course is the prophet is so limited it guides you towards those sounds with ease. As the S6 is so much more flexible it takes more time to get those tones. It’s always the way tbh. Propbet 6 vs Rev2 is similar. The P6 has less modulation etc but everything sounds great. The Rev2 can ‘do’ a lot of the P6 tones but there’s a lot more in there.

@@StarskyCarr To me the S6 sounds / feels closer to the P6. Did you make a video or had the chance of comparing the P5/P10 rev4 with the rev3 or prior? Keep it up!

You’re right. Loads of it is about what it looks like and how it feels to use it hands on. It’s a huge part of why we buy hardware.

@@StarskyCarr Nice. I follow you on facebook too. Can you do a Pre Questions post before you do the Polybrute? It's pretty much being touted as the synth that can emulate everything analog. Personally I've looked at it as their version of a Moog One minus some intentional key elements.

Voice allocation makes a huge difference. It’s funny how a digital algorithm can make something sound more analog.

I've already demo'd the S6.. so anyone can watch that and see what it can do. These videos literally take days to put together so adding all the functions of the S6 into this doesn't add anything to the content I've already provided. I think anyone interested in the S6 knows what it can do and will have watched plenty of other videos demoing its binaural mode (including mine). It's simply not feasible to show EVERYTHING it can do in EVERY demo. I don't have the time for a start! This is some additional info ... not forcing it to do anything, or trying to prove a point. If you listen to my intro/outro you'll know I'm answering questions posed by others asking if it's an updated Jupiter 6... no... but it can do some things... but actually its closer to a P5. Nothing more. If you're weighing up what your next purchase is this may help decide on a particular synth you're looking at. I think lots of people will find this useful, and will already understand the S6 capabilities. I doubt anyone watching will be unaware of its additional functions.

@@StarskyCarr HI Starsky, it's easy to be a critic, so for that I apologize. I also respect that it takes a lot of time to do these vids, and I think you really know and understand these instruments, which is very helpful for people. Hopefully, you can see some value, however, in the point(s) I've made. Comparisons are powerful, and in both your S6/Prophet 5 and S6/Jupiter 6 vids, you tried to make the S6 sound like these other synths instead of the other way around. I think this can be misleading as the comments suggest because people are inclined to say, "this one (the P5 in this particular comment) sounds more organic," based on the way you're demo'ing the synth - because you're trying to make the S6 match the other synth - as opposed to (potentially) optimizing the S6 to sound sound as good as it can sound. I'm simply pointing this out for whatever it's worth.

@@Pacer416 yeah but the whole point of these is to show how flexible the S6 is that it can sound similar to the classics as well as doing it’s own thing. I stand by what I said earlier - I can’t do everything in every demo. There’s little value in showing that a prophet 5 can’t do binaural mode or that a Jupiter 6 doesn’t have digital wave table oscillators. Everyone knows this already. I don’t quite get what you’re saying other than on every video I’m not showing the S6 to its full potential, even though I’ve demo’d it previously. I suppose I could play some tones and say the others can’t do that… but then I actually do a bit of that as well. So you’re right in that everyone can be a critic.. and without being an a**hole I can only suggest having a think about how you’d put together a series yourself demoing a synth then showing how it compares to classics without repeating yourself or making each video 2 hours long … while keeping a focus on each and having a narrative that walks through the salient points without drifting. Not being a dick here … it’s just not as simple as saying everything every time. Then there’s writing the demo tracks, matching the patches, writing some demo melodies, plus recording the passing shots and B-role… on top of that there’s dinner to make, kids to take to and from various clubs… oh and making a living (this loses money.. just a hobby). Let’s not forget about sourcing the synths… learning them inside out (can’t possibly say something inaccurate or misleading.. god forbid 😂😂🤦‍♂️) and organising couriers and a whole lot more. Again not being a d@ck but trying to put what your watching in context… and now I’ve thought about all that maybe you should think about what your criticising … once again I realise I’m coming across like an arse but trying not to !! Really.. take some time to think about how you’d do it better… then have a go yourself 😂 sounds facetious but honestly I’d love you to… it’s great fun and quite rewarding to put something together. … … just take a breath before reading the comments!! 😩🤣

@@StarskyCarr HI Starsky, All fair points. To be honest, the reason I've never done it myself is because of the amount of time it takes! I've thought about it, but after reading your reply, you haven't convinced me that it's "fun." : ) In any event, I've made my point and you've made yours. At the end of the day, it's your vid and not mine. Comparison vids are tough for the reasons you've stated. I guess where you lost me is that in the way you're comparing the UDO to the P5, the UDO doesn't sound nearly as good as it can - in my opinion - not because the UDO can't sound as good as a P5, but because you're forcing the S6 to get to the sound the same way the P5 gets there, and it can't do it as well. One way to consider a diff't type of comparison would be to design say "Strings," and rather than match them exactly - just try to get them close, but allow each synth to get there in their own way. In other words, here are the best sounding strings I could get on the P5, and here are the best sounding strings I could get on the S6. Now Listener, what do you think? Anyway, I don't want to beat a dead horse. I understand what you're saying...and I think both of us make fair points.

Yeah as I'm listening to everything else.. envelopes, filters, timbre etc the tuning can drift slightly. While I'm focussing on those other bits I sometimes don't realise until I'm editing by which time it's too late. Sometimes I do.. sometimes I'm far too engaged with getting a nightmare envelope to behave :) hopefully it still gets the character out there.

Thanks… I’ve actually attempted to record a Repro5 vs P5 video - but the prophet keeps drifting so after I’ve set up a complex patch, matched it then gone to demo how close they are the Prophet will have changed slightly so the resonance is out or FM isn’t ringing the same!! Aargh!! 😂

Hah that sounds frustrating. I almost sold my p5 after I bought repro but it’s hard to part with it. So pretty… haha

Bah dude the S6 sounds awesome, sure I like the P5 sound a bit better (in these patches) but S6 is awesome. I’m sure you could make plenty of patches on the S6 specifically that the P5 couldn’t get near.

Well it is a true VCO.. maybe that does actually make a real difference - however minor. I LOVE the P5.. which is why I thought folks might be interested to see how close the S6 gets to that legendary tone.
