As a first batch Super 6 owner, I can tell you that most factory presets are fine, but not great. The synth really shines when you start exploring it yourself. You run into a sweet spot every 10 seconds. It's really amazing and unique. Yes, once you built a very complex patch with tons of modulation is hard to remember and deconstruct, so an editor for it would be great just to see how some sounds have been made by others as well as by yourself.
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 2 года назад
I agree. I wanted to show the presets here as they delve deep into the modulation and overall capabilities whereas I might go down a particular route... so letting them speak for themselves in a way. Once you 'do what you do' and create tones for your compositions they can shine much more than I demo here. ... also I only had a day with them both in the end! :(
@blpfrk

You did a great job as always. My comment was mainly for people to be aware, that there is so much more to it than the factory presets. Some synths are blessed with amazing factory presets, for example most latest Sequential synths.

It's great to hear these two side by side. I've got the PolyBrute, it's my first and only polysynth. I tried a Super 6 in the shop but couldn't get it to make a sound! 😂 Still something of a newbie. I'm looking forward to seeing your full review of the PolyBrute. I'd be interested in hearing how it compares to the new Prophet 5/10 and whether the PB can get that classic fluety/trumpety pad thing the Prophet is so good at.

I have Super 6 and it is a very complex synth for sound design. It is basically modular synth, with all those extra routings, hidden oscillators, wacky overtones... yes , you get beautiful patch bank but if you are a noob, I guess polybrute was more straightforward choice.
@sub-jec-tiv

Polybrute doesn’t have a Prophet filter in it. It won’t sound like a Prophet. If you read the manual or look at the panel of that expensive professional instrument you own, you’ll note the Polybrute has a Moog-style ladder filter and a Steiner-Parker filter. Neither of which will sound like a Prophet. If you do some research into this topic you’ll find out the answers to these questions for yourself.

The expression on the brute its fantastic! Nothing comes close and the morph feature it’s unique, if I had to sell one I probably would sell the super6, fantastic product design but at a cost, still the ones I use the most I have to say are my sequential polys, prophet and ob6

I owned both and sold the brute. For me, and it’s just an opinion, the brute didn’t stand up against the old Polys. It just didn’t sound as warm or as big or as organic. The UDO, on the other hand, stands on its own, and is more comparable to the Prophet VS or the PPG Wave. You really have to spend time on it, and appreciate the nuances. it’s beauty is in its simplicity. In my case, once I understood it, it delivered incredible organic magic. If I didn’t have any Analog Polys, I would have kept the brute because it’s a bread and butter Synth. Because I own a couple of other classics, going with the UDO was an ez decision for me personally. With humility, I also think the UDO is a more advanced Synth. At first glance, it looks very simple. No screen. It’s small. But it actually does a lot. It’s a Synth where a little goes a long way. The brute, on the other hand, certainly has a lot of buttons and a lot of features, so from that standpoint there is certainly a lot to learn. I’m referring more to the programming of the UDO. I feel I was able to get a lot more out of the UDO 5 to 10 years ago now that I have more experience. (BTW, I’m certainly not trying to suggest that if you’re an experienced synth player you will choose the UDO. I’m simply saying that in my case, it really helped make my decision).

Sorry to say that you made a big mistake. At the beginning the PB might sound a little thin and sterile - BUT if you had explored it you‘d experienced a lot of eargasms. It‘s very easy to make it sound like the vintage behemoths (somewhere in between CS-80 and OB-Xa), just using Creative Spiral‘s Voice Component Modelling. The ‘voice‘ mod source is true gold!

Oddly enough, your ‘brass’ patch on the Super 6 was my favorite of both synths. Still, I think the Polybrute is has a lot more going on; from the 5 oct keybed, expressive’ & ribbon controllers, and the matrix programmer. But the binaural feature of the S6 is something I’d like to experience first hand.

I want to like the Polybrute so much due to its sweet mod matrix setup, but it just never sounds that great to me... it's like it's muffled or something, here compared to the Super 6.... Nice demonstration. IMHO, both are different beast, and excel at different types of sound. Both have excellent stereo-spread, and really fill-up a room with sound. Otherwise, UDO really needs to develop a software editor/librarian, due to it’s lack of detailed info.

Thanks.. that's pretty much the conclusion I come to at the end of my upcoming comparison video. Arturia is more of a chameleon, Super 6 has a more distinct tone - so personal choice at the end of the day. both can sound great but the Polybrute is easier to edit... The matrix, screen and editor make a huge difference there.

Thanks for video and comparison - both sound superb IMO - not listened to as many demos of the Super 6 but have listened to lots of the PolyBrute and I'd love to own one if I could afford/justify - the user interface and sound are fantastic. As an owner of lots of soft synths and owner of only one bit of hardware (and not a full synth) a MOXF 6 I'd love to hear a comparison of one of these with say UHE Zebra 2 layered with Diva - or UHE Zebra 2 layered with Bazille (my new favourite soft synth) - genuinely can't judge how they'd stack up. I often see and hear on RU-vid comparisons of soft synth emulations Vs the original hardware but less so modern/not so emulated Vs the latest hardware synths

Honestly,i would be very happy with any one of these synths. Beautiful sounds from both. Saying that i still want a summit first.
@modeswitching
@modeswitching 2 года назад
No bad choices here. Both of these synths do stereo deliciously, both have great tone and fun hands-on interfaces. PolyBrute is a modulation playground, at the expense of a small amount of hands-on immediacy (the matrix is very intuitive, but is less immediate than just turning a knob). While the PB can do all kinds of stereo effects, I've yet to get it to do some of the things I've heard the Super6 do. Super6 seems to have the same huge tonal sweet spot as a Prophet or OB-6. PB takes more effort to get dialed in, but gives you more variety. Either way you win in my opinion.
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 2 года назад
Its always the way... the more flexible the synth the harder you have to work which I suppose stands to reason - more options means more choices.. some good some not so good. The Prophet 5 is a great example of this. It's really limited compared to modern synths, but everything you do just sounds great. It's like all parameters have been limited to what will sound good.
@embersandash

Listen to this, don’t watch it. It’s amazing how often I guess which instrument wrongly. There are some patches where it’s obvious and many where it’s not.

Nothing about the UDO justifies a $3k price tag, as far as I can tell. On the interface alone the Polybrute looks far more inviting, has an extra octave and costs less. They both sound good but neither of them sound like anything I can do with the synths I already own or just VST's.

Same argument I hear time and time again, completely invalidated by a variety of qualities that hardware still does much better.

they sound far better than any vst, this video just showed it

If you think VSTi sound better than these hardware synth, you’re free to think that. Maybe you’re wasting your time watching and commenting on videos like this. If you don’t hear the value in all those circuits, knobs and sliders, good for you. You’ve just saved a bunch of money.

No offence, but you're just another person who doesn't get it. Get your ear trained a bit more, you will get it one day.

I need to hear some FUNK played on both of these keyboards so I can hear how hard they hit with bass and other sounds. All the soft atmospheric stuff doesn't do anything for me personally other than sound nice for some museum showcase.

Super 6 sounds like a VST, Polybrute sounds like a real Synth.

@@StarskyCarr I listened to this while reading in another browser tab. Each time I heard a sound I liked I switched to the video's tab and each time it was the Polybrute you was playing. (Had a similar experience when checking out the Three Body eurorack module (by Schlappi Engineering) which is also based on an FPGA chip). BTW, George Hearn is a very nice guy and I much enjoyed his presentations of the Super 6.

@@StarskyCarr It’s the digital oscillators, they can sound great, it’s the same with the Novation Summit. But there is a bit of a sonic difference between that and the VCO’s of the Polybrute. That’s not even getting into the two different filter types, and the different ways you can route and combine them. Looking forward to your full video on the Polybrute!

Vco is my cup of tea: Polybrute The Super 6 is pretty lame, could easily be replaced by a vst

Everything could be replaced by a VST sound wise.

UDO is Earpiercing and the Brute is just a random ModSynth - really nothing Special and absolutely nothing I would ever want to hear with Headphones 😂
@Aaa-pz6nh
@Aaa-pz6nh 2 года назад
The Polybrute can do a lot more then just be a random “ModSynth”. He is playing with a lot of the modulation which is just one of its features. There are videos of people actually building patches, and it can sound really great.

I do some of that in my upcoming comparison video. This was purely presets and trying to show how they've programmed them to demo the full variation of capabilities.
