If you change your Photoshop Color Management settings you can use the correct mid values. It's so much easier. Edit -> Color Settings -> Gray: Set to a non-print targeted profile like sGray (or Gray gamma 2.2) (the default Dot Gain is causing the non 50% gray mid value). This way the mid Brightness value 50% will be the zero elevation in your terrain. Use an Exposure Adjustment layer to modify the values (Offset and Exposure). Don't forget to set the Z offset to 0 in Unreal. Also the Z Scale in Unreal will change the min and max elevation correctly. Cheers, D

Super useful, thanks! And what I found, if you exporting the height map from Houdini it's better to set 16 bit Fixed instead of the Floating Point. In that case you wouldn't get a terrace like effect.

I seem to get blocky landscapes even with 16-bit heightmap data :'( seems lots of people having this issue as well, but no solution I have found yet

How would I be able to connect 2 landscapes together?? example if I have 2 separate builds for World Machine and place them in UE, how would I connect them?? because right now, for me, they are not connected and cant fin out a way to do so.

If each pixel of the heightmap corresponds to 1 square meter, then how come the peaks and valleys are so detailed (lot of change within each square meter)?

I just cant get the heightmap for Tokyo/Japan.. I tried SO hard with Tangram and soooo many times, but it just wont work. Is the terrain too mountanous there? no matter what i try it always looks like Sh*t ._. been trying for literal days...

How can I change the z axis from the imported heightmap? I can not sculp deeper, looks linke i m on the max depth but i have a lot of height, how can I now move the heightmap up so that the collisionbox remains in place and I can sculp more deeply?

Help! i dont understand: all the landscapes must be allways imported as image heightmaps??? I own a contour-lines-file (topographic .dwg file), (that i can convert into a mesh) of my city, but I dont understand, it has several vertex, but its not beter to convert into a giant mesh and import into UE5? or its harder to load? why is the reason? sorry, maybe for somes its obviously but im new at UE

It does NOT have to be a heightmap. One option is to create a landscape in UE4 and heightmap gets automatically created for you. Option two is to have a heightmap where the landscape will be created from that said heightmap. Option 3 you can bring it a large mesh that will be your landscape. However there are downsides to this. One mesh will always render and will not occlude at a distance. Landscapes in UE4 will automatically occlude and optimize at a distance making them more ideal.

Your heightmap is 8-bit heightmap, needs to be 16-bit.
