Well the point is that the uglies aren’t actually _ugly_ ppl they are just normal ppl with their own unique features. But in this world, the pretties get so much work done they all start to look similar in a way. It’s like how Kylie Jenner has a million doppelgängers on instagram, because girls be getting the same work done. Joey king is pretty but her face is unique like it doesn’t look like it’s had a ton of work done on it, and in the movie they will use that Facetune app to make her look “conventionally pretty” by the standards of their world and change her features. I do wonder what they will do in the second movie though???
@@FireyCurls22 Meh it has no sense at all... these aren't normal people neither.. they are all beautiful people. Normal will be to have a fat girl as a protagonist and a fat guy as love interest.
@@elnico1369 What if they have genetic modification at birth to not able to get fat? Then these "beauties" are the final step. In a way, it is similar to many Novels about doing what the government want you to do, inject this, believe this to be "accept" in soceity.
Ya. That's the point. Dig the whole idea of a society where when you turn 16 you are pressured into getting surgery to look pretty?.. that's not a future I want to see. ❤
So the idea here is that Joey King is NOT pretty to begin with. So if that's the scale, I'd be a literal monster people would scream at in horror and set on fire.
No. That's what those city companies in the film define as pretty. It's just a fascist trap. It's not about pretty really. It's about, "if you want to be with us then get the surgery." Peer pressure I think is one way to look at it. If you feel like you do then you're not hanging around the right people for you. Go explore. Meet new people. 😊❤
Ive honestly been waiting for this to get made, this is pretty much the first book series i can remember really being that teen dystopia story like before hunger games or divergent but no one ever talks about these. The author Scott Westerfield has many other bangers too
@@andrewmalinowski6673 Um, *pushes glasses up nose with index finger* it's "Number 12 Looks Just Like You" and yes that's the one, not "Eye of the Beholder", though the themes are similar, this is clearly a complete theft of the whole concept and themes of *pushes glasses up nose with index finger again* "Number 12 Looks Just Like You"
@@PhokenKuul It's been several years and I was trying to remember the title, but I heard the audio drama version. While I may have gotten the number wrong, the premise definitely is similar with making people's mindsets being subtly altered by the physical changes to be "prettier"
Tbh I understand how that's how it seems, but since it's based on a novel, the point of it is that our version of attractive doesn't exist in their society. Beauty is taken to an extreme to the point where the characters find an old magazine from "our time" and can't believe that those models were considered beautiful with their "flaws". Their concept of beauty is artificial and unattainable naturally, which is how the population is controlled. It was a story warning the readers about the evolving and unattainable beauty standards of the 2000 (and now tbh), and the dangers of the beauty industry.
@jeffrey.p.thornton oh I 100% agree with that lol but then again, Hollywood cannot seem to be able to cast people that actually look like they aren't supposed to be in magazines. Even the movie DUFF which has Fat in the title had Mae Whitman who is 1000% not fat as the titled fat friend. Katniss in Hunger Games was supposed to have suffered from malnutrition her entire life like most people in her district, and almost none of them actually looked like that.
@theyearwas1473 Tbh, I didn't notice the Burker King promo, but yeah, I'm not surprised. While I love the book, the movie adaptation is a bit late, and ads in movies are way too common nowadays (like in tv shows). It's a bit sad honestly.
That’s crazy I read this when I was 11 and NOW that I’m 27 they decide to make it into a movie!!? Maybe cuz Hunger Games and Divergent came to steal the thunder and they didn’t want to make the movie and look like a copy cat even though this book came out in 2005… hope it’s as good as I remember!
@@christopherbedford9897 there were young adults before the ya GENRE too. But I guess your mind ignored that word from the comment for convenience. There were a ya genre train back around 2005-2015, that"s gone. deal with it.
The ironic thing in this movie is the Joey King IS pretty, in fact, I'd say she'd *beautiful.* And even though she's 25 now, she still looks like a teenager. Can't wait to see this movie.
I read this book a long time ago!! I don't remember being called The Uglies, though? Either I'm thinking of a different series, or is the book titled differently? Ok I looked it up and it is called The Uglies..... it's been a long time since I've read and loved a book but somehow forgot its name😂😂
This looks like the entire point of the movie is undermined by Hollywood being so far up its own ass that it thinks the kids who are part of The Smoke are ugly.
It's more a dumb down version of THE TWILIGHT ZONE'S #12 Just Looks Like Me" based on the short story "The Beautiful People" mixed with early 2000's teen books. Plus another TWILUGHT Zone episode that escapes my mind but it had Ellie Mae as the hot girl who thinks she's ugly.
I get why people are making fun of how pretty all the 'ugly' people are. And yeah. But that's sorta the point. They live in a dystopian society where all the instragram filters, cosmetic surgeries, photoshop models, ai models, all of it is real. Everybody actually looks like that now. And you are told, as a teenager, that you are ugly if you don't look that way. The point is that these people are brainwashed.
@@coreyboyd28 Ooh... super defensive. In your own words, 'YA novels have gone from theaters to streaming now' and you can't even tell _that is what a conclusion is?_ 🙄 I mean, I can't even put it in simpler words to explain it to you 🤷♂
@@christopherbedford9897 no not defensive. Just hate when people of lower intelligence try to get my attention. But you have it now so here we are Again, what was the conclusion I was making with my comment? If you said something like “that’s an astute observation” or something like that, I’d agree with you. But you haven’t provided an ACTUAL ACCURATE answer. So I ask you again, what conclusion am I drawing exactly?
@@coreyboyd28 "People of lower intelligence," yah OK. Your arrogant sneering attitude drips from every judgemental word. As I already stated, _twice,_ if you can't understand that you have drawn a conclusion you really should go back to grade school. Bye now, have a nice life tossing pearls before swine.
Omg 😳 for Goodness sake Joey King please choose a role where ur NOT 16, while doing most things that are most likely illegal to do at that age. U can’t be Forever 16 girl!! Thou having ur love interest be that BEAUTIFUL BLACK MAN, I just Love to see it. Especially when you have the black men playing love interests.
So, it's basically Plastic Surgery vs. Loving yourself? such a dumb premise for a movie. so the story is guaranteed sh*t. The rest seem alright. It has shadows of Divergent.
