With the announcement of the BMW X3 M and X4 M & Competition models, we wondered what we'd do with the 2019 BMW X4 M40i we had booked and if it was still worth reviewing.
TestDrive is proud to produce our second full episode of TestDrive Spotlight on a BMW M Performance vehicle, this 2019 BMW X4 M40i. Our full tour and review of BMW's G02 compact sport activity coupé covers everything you'd be interesting in knowing if you're in the market for a $77,145.00 vehicle. We have the opportunity to push it with several fly-bys and exhaust tests and show what this X4 can do on normal roads.
We go over some of the exterior styling and details including what's been added and changed for the second generation X4 and also discuss some of what we've found when posting this vehicle on social media and in BMW enthusiast groups. We jump on the inside to discuss some of the styling and design choices made on this vehicle, along with the lack of an M Sport steering wheel for North American vehicles.
But the real meat and potatoes of the 2019 BMW X4 M40i comes when we take it on our road test. We get to listen to the symphony of turbos and blow offs as we drive this vehicle through some of the twisty roads of Québec, and show off the 0-100km (0-60 mph) performance from this stock vehicle. We talk about our impressions driving this vehicle and why we think it might be a good choice for those looking for something different.
We wrap up our full tour and review of the 2019 BMW X4 M40i G02 by talking about our fuel economy testing, what we liked the most about this vehicle, what we hope is fixed or changed in subsequent model years, and what you should expect if you're thinking about buying a vehicle like this X4.

Not ugly, just different. Mine is a lot of fun. Super quick and smooth and I find the interior typical BMW. If you are ok losing a bit of cargo space and want something sporty, consider this over the X3 or X5.

The interior is 100 times better than the previous gen. The steering wheel thing must be annoying. But i love this car

Luckily only a small number of X4s configured this way would come with this steering wheel, although it would be nice if BMW offered to replace them at no charge to customers who want the actual M Sport wheel.

This all started from the x6 which Mercedes quickly copied. I’ve been in one of these and driven them, whilst I wouldn’t buy one, I can see and feel the appeal being inside it. I like cars that don’t make sense, that can’t be pigeon holed and don’t conform to people’s expected styles/practicality’s, and for that reason, they sell

This would of been cooler as a 2 door with a lot of storage space behind the front seats. It would fill a niche that has never existed before. Having a 2 door performance SUV would be really cool. And dont even waste the space with some shitty non functional back seat or the engineering for the doors

Bring back the old-school two door SUVs! We've got one parked in the Garage, though I wouldn't consider it (a 1992 Geo Tracker) to be anything remotely sporty. Overall we'll pass on the X4, but we really hope BMW gives us the X3 M Comp instead of the X4.

I admit the X6 is a nice looking coupe-UV, but I'm not sold completely on the X4 still.

Might be due to them being winter tires. The rims aren't from the M40i either, the BMW we pick up cars from almost always uses an older set of rims for winter.

A smaller set up is always best for winter. Easier to clear the wheel wells of packed snow and a narrower tire always results in better snow performance.

I got my 2019 X4 M40i around christmas of 2018, which I believe among the earliest batch that delivered in Ontario, but still didn't have the M steering wheel.😠

It seems like that's going to be the case for all of the 2019 X4s sold here in Canada. I know there's been some discussion on BimmerPost about it, I'll be curious to see if later production 2019s get them or not. I think it's incredibly disappointing for owners who end up getting stuck with the regular wheel.

Don’t understand who buys this instead of regular X3. I love that engine, but that’s it. Give it to me in regular X3 or X5. But who am I kidding, I still love my F150 king ranch and take it over these pretenders any day.

I agree, which is why I'm hoping BMW switches it up for summer and offers the X3 M Competition instead of the X4. Last year they had the X3 M40i when it was launched, now this, so hopefully it's back to a proper shape for an SUV.

I really don't get it either, even using this mostly on my own this week I still didn't see the appeal of it. But I do see a lot more GLC Coupes than the X4.

Like them or not, I like that a small few manufacturers still have the balls to make something different and unnecessary. And that their buyers are happy to be non conventional and buy what they want, not what’s perceived practical.

@@PRNTestDrive Top car reviewers universally slated X6 when in came out and therefore it was expected that the public would reject it. Gues what? It sold very well and concept ended up being copied by other manufacturers. So BMW know what they are doing with these designs I suppose in relation to market segment demand

I think most people would agree with you. I finally saw another 2018/2019 on the road today! I would take the X3 over this 100% of the time.

I've driven the X3 M40i back to back with an Audi SQ5.. I have to say.. The BMW was like a scalpel compared to the Audi a butter knife. I know the Audi I drove had the air ride and it was EXCELLENT.. But I didn't fairly compare the spec sheets between the two to know if the BMW had the adaptive suspension. I walked away that day and said "I'd definitely buy the Audi".. But as time has gone by the DRIVE of the BMW is still etched into my mind. This video brought back some of those positive thoughts I had about the BMW. I love the look of the X3, but I don't even want to open my eyes to see this X4.. eeek! Thank you for putting this one together, even though the ugliness of the vehicle was likely a huge distraction haha. I'm going to drive the BMW again and mess around with the drive mode settings.. What an impressive package it is! We'll likely end up with one because they seem to lease out way better than Audi.

Haha! That's been my worry about this video, I think I might have produced my favourite episode so far, but it's on a car that absolutely no one cares about. I had the chance to drive the SQ5 when it first launched, the only thing I remember was how painfully slow the transmission shifted when it was in manual mode. I really enjoyed driving this X4, even though the looks weren't my cup of tea. I'm just crossing my fingers that BMW Canada offers the X3 M Competition instead of the X4 later this year for us.
