This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

I wonder about that. Because it's his personality that really is the unique thing about the presentation, rather than just the games themselves. I wonder how it would translate to the print medium. "No reverse gear Barnes". It is possible that his aggressiveness was why he did as well against Morphy as he did. Morphy was usually able to get his opponents onto the back foot very quickly. Sooner or later they would usually crack. In many games, Barnes had Morphy dealing with Barnes' own aggression and thus it was more difficult for Morphy to win in his usual style..

Ben Feingold was explaining in one video why a higher rated player will typically win- it’s because they will last longer before making a blunder. The closer the rating the longer the lower rated player will go but eventually they will blunder first and lose. I think that’s perfectly illustrated in these games that Morphy is just a couple hundred ELO above Barnes and capitalized on a small mistake.

I really appreciate how Agad doesn't just talk about the games, but he gives life to the players where you get a feel for their different personalities. I found this channel interested in mostly AlphaZero and Kasparov, but Agad really makes you invest into all kinds of quirky chess personalities - Carlsen, Caruana, Firouzja, Hikaru, Wesley, MVL, Giri, Nepo, Ivanchuk, Karpov, Tal, Capablanca, etc. I guess it's like knowing all the players on your favorite sports team or knowing all the side characters from an anime you watch lol. Here not just Morphy, but even Thomas Wilson Barnes really seems like an interesting guy, even though maybe none of us know all that much about him.

No, but he certainly appears to be stronger than Adolf Anderssen, whose play, I feel, doesn't live up to his fame.

Actually he was stronger, he could bench press twice what Morphy could.

He was a worthy opponent. That's as far as it goes. Which is more than most of Morphy's opponents can say.

More than half of the comments rooting for Barnes and I’m not going to lie... Man deserves it , I don’t know what it is but seeing him put up such great fights against a highly praised player like Murphy just farms respect for him...GG !

In my opinion if you have the queen play till the end because you never know you might able to give perpetual checks and draw the game.
