This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Playing against the engine really isn't a good idea, because at weaker levels they play weird and strong levels, well, they play like engines! There's no scope for using tactics with them. @Arguing101
@Arguing101 4 года назад
@Alex Imagine thinking "imma" is some type of "disgraceful" rapper lingo when in actuality its an extremely common saying amongst a large portion of the demographics. This is some "OK Boomer" shit right here. People really have to stop looking at language through a grammatical supremacy lens. The faster people realize that there is no actual "correct" way of speaking, the better. Unless you are part of that one institute in England completely dedicated to "perfecting" the grammar of the English language--you're really in no place to talk. And even if you were, you would know that virtually NO ONE speaks the way that they deem "correct," and that it would sound absolutely ridiculous to everyone else. Instead, people should approach language from a linguistic perspective. A perspective that believes that language is an incredibly beautiful cultural and human phenomenon that should be admired and documented. Your comment indicates you have a bias against African American lingo. However, although a lot of their dialects use what many would consider "improper" grammar (based on our arbitrary standard of what is correct), a quick study would show that the usage of such "improper" grammar actually has its own rules within that dialect/community. Its not written down and taught in schools, but the usage of that dialect's grammar is completely understood within that community. AGAIN, these dialects are NOT just a hodgepodge of improper usages of standard English. There are actual RULES. So, I ask this. If that dialect follows a set of rules that everyone understands, what makes it any different from our perception of "proper" English?

Morphy plays the Morphy's Defence in the Ruy Lopez. Everyone: "HE DID IT!, HE DID IT!" Poor old Barnes. Again with the unbridled aggressive attitude. All those knights moves allowed him to get a full rook advantage, but at the cost of allowing Morphy full development, and beautifully placed Bishops for an attack on the Kingside. Another game which teaches us the principle of "Try not to move the same piece in the opening".

Attacking is way more awesome when you're always 2 moves away from getting checkmated. Morphy always wins because he's 3 moves away from getting mated.

Yo agad! Love your work. This has probably been asked many times but - How come you never mention the time controls in which a game was played? Did they even have time controls back in the 19th century? Thanks

Barnes vs Ivanchuk... How crazy that would have been! They're both masters at dancing around the board, not making sense, but creatively stunning their opponent (even when losing).

As per Wikipedia: "Death: Barnes went on a diet and lost 130 pounds (9st 4lb, aprox. 59kg) in 10 months, which resulted in his death." Dont forget to share with friends at the bar and library

The Barnes Gambit, sadly refuted. When I was in my early forties, I lost 70 pounds in 4 months. Then I took up weightlifting (for toning, not bulk), aerobics, etc. For several years I was probably the fittest mid-forties man in my town. I did a LOT of walking (no running -- why destroy my shins and feet?). However, I suspect Barnes went on a starvation diet, and didn't balance out his weight loss with healthy eating and moderate exercise. Also, I wonder if he was a drinker and/or a smoker. That right there would have made a difference. Sadly, I'm in my mid-sixties now, and my glory days are gone.

@@davidanderson_surrey_bc Wow! 70 pounds in a few months is quite an impressive feat. I agree the way you did it is definitely the correct way to go - restricting any unfavourable diet elements while still maintaining vitamin/mineral/necessary protein/carb intake and working out. As you said, Barnes lived in another era altogether so it's likely that his diet was not the best. Starvation diets are very harmful, particularly in older individuals.
