Peter I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say this design is the work of genius, the beauty is in the application of the theory(Parfagoras, lol) and the execution of the jig, it's a really clever piece of work, very well done Sir. I also have to comment, the quality of your video presentations is equally impressive, you are a very fine teacher indeed, it's always a real pleasure to see your work. Tony
Hi Tony, You have made my day, thank you so much. It was 3 years of work to get things right where every component contributes to the accuracy of the finished job. Cheers. Peter
Great video Peter!!! i have received my UJK parf system and set up my MDF 3/4 parf table and just finished doing the test cut. mIm really impressed how accurate it turned out. the diff was 0.36mm on a length of ply 575 mm long, resulting in a final cut accuracy of 0.000157mm. that's pretty awesome.
Hi Peter. My set arrived safe & sound yesterday. Only about a week from UK to Australia. Now to build the bench...and the new workshop. But that can wait till spring & the rain & snow stops.
Thanks. Although you may be out of Europe, sending English & Canadian made gear to a New Zealander in Australia means the Commonwealth is still going strong!
Hi Warwick, I am so pleased that you have taken the effort to say all of this and I will make a point of sending an email today to the excellent export sales staff at Axminster who have made this, and so many other overseas orders, go so smoothly. There are others there that also deserve praise including sales team, the warehouse staff, the dispatchers and, of course, the dedicated engineering team who are now all working flat out keeping up with demand. Cheers. Peter
Medite seems to be unobtainable here in Australia, so I went with Forescolor, similar or possibly identical to the Valchromat that Axminster uses for their multifunction bench tops. I found that in humid weather this stuff grows huge amounts of mould, despite not being exposed to anything other than humid air. Quite the health hazard!
Is that straight edge DIN 874 0/1/2? I know straight edges are expensive. The Kinex brand is a Czech brand which may be cheaper and easier for European folks to acquire. Don't know the issues now that UK left the EU.
It is available in the U.S., but the only place I could find was in Oregon or Washington state, about 2700 miles from me. I'm still looking around, though
Hi Paul, Medite is available in the US but perhaps not in every region. Try and get the best possible grade of MDF as the drilling will be much easier and the finished top will last a lot longer. In the past I have used HDF (High Density Fibreboard) which is not cheap but makes a superb top. Good luck. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop Medite is a brand name for Medium Dinsity Fiberboard (MDF). MDF and lots of other materials are harder to come by and costs have been rising. In the US go to your lumber store and ask for Moisture Resistant MDF, it may be a special order item. I have been researching MDO (Medium-Density Overlay) plywood aka Sign Board, it is plywood sandwiched between to layers of hardboard aka MDF; the idea is to see if I can increase strength and decrease the weight. However, 3/4 inch (19mm) double sided MDO is nearly impossible to find and is expensive.
Regarding the 48 mm offset hole: I would have considered using the orange drill guide with the drill in the wrong bushing (the one for 3 mm pin alignment bushing). Also using the orange drill guide and drill dog to put 3 mm holes with offset is something I have done previously. (#MK1owner)
Hi Robert, The only thing to watch is breakout underneath. It is not Medite Smartply that I recommend it is Medite Mositure Resistant MDF. Most moisture resistant MDF is better than normal MDF. Peter
Hi Peter. I really enjoy your excellent videos. I purchased the UJF Parf Guide System. But after I drilled all of the holes I found that the 20 mm dogs were very tight. I got out my Starrett digital Micrometer and measured the drill bit and it was 19.89 mm. While the dogs were a thousandth over 20 mm. What do you suggest sir? Thank you
Hi Ralph, What dogs are you using and where did you buy them from? You did well to measure the diameter of a round hole in MDF to 0.01 mm accuracy. I am sure that this can be sorted very quickly. Peter
Hi Ralph, Many thanks for getting back to me. Please contact Axminster Customer Services (cs@axminstertools.com) and explain the situation to them. I am not sure how the dogs could not fit into a hole drilled with that 20 mm cutter. Please let me know if you have any problems getting it sorted out. Cheers. Peter
Hi Ralph, I just measured my Parf Super Dogs and they are just under 20 mmm and are a snug fit in the holes that I drill with the 20 mm cutter. Axminster should sort this out for you. They may arrange for your old cutter to be returned. Good luck. Peter
Just a question about what you mentioned first, the maximum depth of cut? I wondered, what's the outer diameter of the forstner guide bushing? If it were the same diameter of the cutter, and you really needed a deep cut, could there be any mileage in turning the bit around and dropping the bushing into the hole you've started?
+Sam Tranter Hi Sam that is a very clever idea and it would work if only the two were matched. There may be accessories that help in this area at a much later stage. Cheers. Peter
Hi Stephen, When I did my dust study a couple of years ago (Google the video) I was told then that Medite MR posed no formaldehyde risk but I have not checked this in any way. Mt professional woodworking friends use it as the normal MDF is not good in that respect. Peter
Thanks for the clarification Peter. This might be a silly question but do you have any tips for ensuring the very first set of holes that are drilled are parallel to the edge of the board, and also, how far from the edge of the board they should be? In your PGS part 1 video you seem to start by clamping the ruler without thought, however I'm sure you measured it first.
Hi Stephen, One of the things that I made clear is that steel rulers are not necessarily straight - perhaps 0.25 mm out (ie not much). However, the holes in the PGS are dead straight. So, If you really need to get the holes absolutely parallel to that first side you need to do some very careful measuring which is just not worth the effort. Using the PGS you will get the rows and columns of holes at near perfect right angles (see the 4 cut test) and so all I do is get the first Parf Stick about where I want it to be, clamp it and carry on. There is no perfect distance from the edge and it does depend on your layout. The MDF needs about 10 mm between its edge and the nearest hole but your layout might demand more. If your design requires perfect parallel holes to the edge then AFTER the holes are made and enlarged to 20 mm use the array of holes, and the Parf Dogs to set up your guide rail so that you can cut that wafer thin slice to get the two spot on. Peter
G'day from Australia All of my bench dogs are 3/4". Some Veritas but most made from 3/4" copper water pipe with brass end stops. Is there any likelihood that you may be producing a 3/4" system in the future? The hole spacing does not matter. I assume that the US market will want 3/4" product.
We are investigating this but there would have to be many versions of the 20 mm Guide Block (or many adapters). If we get anywhere I will announce it by video. Peter
Could you provide the dimensions of the chamfer/countersink required for the 20mm dog holes? i.e., 1.5x45° as an example I would prefer not to create a chamfer/countersink larger than necessary
Here in New Jersey, there is a product called Medex Moisture Resistant. It is supposed to be a premium product with no formaldehyde risk. Would you happen to know if it is anything like Medite?
one more question, that piece of wood already has a lot of the smaller holes in it, how do you position all those small holes accurately ? and what jig do you use to do it with?
+Nathan Longfellow Hi Nathan, It can be ordered direct from Axminster in the UK. You can even have your basket shown in US dollars. There is an international orders department who have already shipped quite a few to the US. We are expecting to reach an agreement with a North American distributor soon. Peter
Peter, I am going to pre-order to make sure I get one of the next batch, but do you know what the ETA on this will be please? Are the 10mm dogs the same ETA? Many thanks.
It is a bit tricky for me to check as I am unable to phone Axmnster until next week. However, I understand that the PGS should be coming in stock within 2 weeks. Pre-order customers (there are many ahead of you) will get theirs first but the supply should be very steady and so yours would be soon after that. The Veritas Parf Dogs (504543) are in stock now. The Veritas Small Bench Dogs (504542) are shown on the web site as being available in 3 weeks. These are in stock at some of the Axminster stores if you live near one. Good luck. Peter
Peter - thank you for this. I was wondering how i could create an 'out of phase' hole that was lined up in one dimension, but not the other. You have given me the answer
+Theoldguys 8 Yes, I have seen it on the internet but not to play with. I would be happy to look at them more closely but have no idea if Festool wish me to do that. Peter
Peter, another very helpful video. Sounds like you may have been getting robust challenge trying to do the system down, if that is the case please don't take it to heart as I am sure all your efforts are very much appreciated by the majority of people, don't let the #%gg^%s get you down!
+T Radford The reaction has been very favourable indeed. The demand has been so high that the PGS has sold out but people are being very understanding and waiting for their back-orders. Cheers. Peter
+damasydia You and me both. When I went for my annual check-up my doctor asked me how often I work out - I told him I did the odd bit of geometry most days ! Peter
Just got a UJK PGS. Everything is good but the drill stopper is not. Doesn't last for 5 minitues. The screw on the stopper needs a better one. It really is a pitty. I like to watch all your vedios.
