It is interesting that the mother isn't held partly responsible for her son's death as she gave meds not prescribed. If she wasn't aware why did she not consult the Dr if this was fine to give in the circumstances. It's always easier to lay blame at others rather than take responsibility for our own behaviour. Grief clouds judgement and logic. Maybe when the Mother has calmed she may realise her part in what occurred as awful as it is.

Anybody who has worked in a hospital knows how difficult it is to be in all places at once. Mistakes are made not from incompetency but from the sheer volume of workload. Split second decisions, poor transmission of information. One emergency call is all it takes for you to have to drop everything you are doing in the midst of that and spend an hour elsewhere. The system is well and truly unfit for purpose. Who should be in the dock? The government.

Extremely well said,a truly heartbreaking story,and your account really touched my heart. You,as well as each and every one of your Colleagues will always,always have my unconditional support. Having attended a Rally at Westminster Central Hall last Thursday evening,you should know that the level and strength of Support for you all from us,the Public,is immense and growing at an exponential rate. We all love all of you for what you do,and I know I speak for millions when I give you my Word that we will peacefully but very firmly fight for an immediate improvement,followed by medium and long term plans to Nurse the NHS back to full strength,so that the pressures you face are lifted. This year is the 70th Birthday of the NHS,and she has grown into a beautiful,organic Entity,built by the vibes of Care,Compassion and unbreakable Spirit of each and every one of you. Our intention is to reverse all Privatisation and bring the NHS back under State Control,exactly how it was when she was born. We will not fail you :-)

Nicely put together summary of a case many doctors around the world have been following (including myself here in Australia). We, in the medical profession, are as human as our patients. We're not perfect. We can make mistakes. In this case the doctor did make mistakes - no-one would deny that fact. But her mistakes were the result of a system which seems to have been poorly managed. She became the "fall-guy" for a medical system that appears rife with issues. I'm sorry and sad for the death of Jack Adcock, but at the same time I can't tell you how angry this case has made me. As a GP I intend to quit medicine in the next 5 years - despite only being 45. I've been planning it for some time. And medico-legal cases like this reaffirm my resolve to get out while I still can!

meddude you can’t blame her mistakes on the system, she made mistakes that resulted in jacks death. Regardless to any errors in system, she should have don’t better that days. Maybe have a read of the 21 mistakes she made, not cause by system error, then you may have a different opinion. I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t make the mistakes she did and they aren’t excusable!

The case of Dr Bawa Garba has given me a forgiving heart. My very much loved aunty died on the 27th of March after ending up in hospital after having diarrhoea. She was in hospital for 48 hours then died. When she got to hospital they sorted her out and she was right as rain after a few hours. She was sitting up in the bed like nothing had ever happened. Hours later things started going seriously wrong. The doctors noticed that she had a scar on her body which showed she'd had an operation. They asked if she'd had her spleen taken out but she didn't know. They told her the scar was the type you have if your spleen has been removed and explained that the reason the treatment they were giving her was because she didn't have a spleen. Hours later she was totally out of it and couldn't speak anymore or sit up. The doctors tried everything they could think of then they finally realised that she had sepsis, but by then it was far far too late. The last thing she ever said was asking for her pastor to come to the hospital to read her favourite Bible chapter, Psalm 91. We later found out that in 2017 her GP had told her she had a chest infection then in January this year the GP said her chest was clear, but when she was in hospital the doctors said she had a chest infection which looked like it had been there for a very long time. My family requested the X rays from the GP, but they were not forthcoming at all. They never did give them to us which was suspicious because it seemed like they were hiding something. We were very suspicious, we were not interested in getting money from anyone, we just wanted to know what happened because her death was just so sudden for a person who had been very healthy and had never been hospitalised or even seriously ill in over 17 years.

Devastating the way this poor doctor was treated. She had her 2 week old breast fed baby removed from her for 7 hours for police questioning of apparent manslaughter?! Paediatricians are under phenomenal pressure in today’s nhs. This was a day of systemic chaos, my heart goes out to her. The system failed jack, the unprescribed enalapril, NOT the doctor. She needed to be in 8 places at once what was she expected to do to avoid her fate? Not go to work because there was no staff or system in place? Sounds like not turning up is the only way to avoid this. And that’s what will happen. Thanks, GMC.

He was a very vulnerable little boy and should have been recognised to be so. He should have been treated with preventative measures adopted promptly, and close and attentive monitoring at all times. She was not blameless, and there were reasons for her conviction. Bawa-Garba spoke to the senior consultant who arrived on the ward for the routine handover. She did not urge him to examine Jack himself, so he did not do so. She also did not show him the blood gas results, but she did explain her treatment plan without raising concerns about Jack. She told him Jack had improved. She spoke to him again two hours later. I am pleased however that you are "glad" that she has been reinstated, as if a member of your family or friends die in these circumstances you will be very understanding.

I would hope that if my child died as a result of systematic negligence, I would not lash out and try and blame an individual, but look into the full events that happened that day. Jack certainty had improved, he had started to respond to external stimulus. It is very tragic, but negligent manslaughter is a ridiculous verdict. The GMC, were looking for a scapegoat. Thankfully that has been overturned.

The Paediatric unit was seriously understaffed and without senior supervision. Where were the senior managers? Why did they not close admissions on that day and divert paediatric emergencies to another centre; Nottingham, Derby, Coventry or Birmingham. Unintentional mistakes were made by a multitude of those involved, including to a degree, the request of the child’s mother that a blood pressure lowering drug, which was usually taken by the child, should be dispensed, when it had been quite correctly omitted by the doctor. This is not apportioning blame but it does mean that one individual, the doctor, should never have been made scape goat for a failed system.

I lost my daughter last year , she was 4 years old in village in uk 🇬🇧, she was neglected by all the doctors , we took her more than 4 times but nothing, they didn't help her and every time we took her they put me down with my husband and keeping telling us she will be fine and give her paracetamol, the last day before she passed away , the doctor was very rude with me and want to say to me again you ?????!!!!!!!! I was bugging her that my lovely princess is not feeling very well but she didn't mind , the day after my daughter was dead at 11 h 30 Am on 19 of April, never ever i will trust the doctors in the JP in that village especially the doctor who was very rude with me and left my daughter without any help and support and any apologies, I hope one day I will have my daughter justice back , the doctor who was the cause of the death 💀 will never forgive her , she destroyed my life and my health and my family , hope my sad story will be sent to people who was having the same case as me 😂😂😂😂😂😂

She missed diagnosed him from the getgo. Why did she send him for a chest X-ray if she thought it was gastroenteritis? Why did she repeat his bloods so soon if it was just gastroenteritis? Why did she not phone the ward and ask how his obs were? This would have shown that they were not being done! I’d love to see his blood results, the time lapse of events and see what other work she was doing that took her 3 hours to check his X-ray results. He clearly had other symptoms pointing at infection and she did not join the dots. Yes the NHS is stretched but she did not prioritize him because of her misdiagnoses. That is incompetence! It is disgusting that this boys tragic death is being used by doctors to highlight the NHS failings and not this doctors failings.

Regardless to the system failures that day, the doctor made more than 21 errors on jack alone which resulted in his death. Before commenting on how the doctor has been poorly treated, maybe you should read the case file on google from 25/01/18, this states all errors that were made on the day Jack died, system and human errors, the human errors outweighing the system errors. As for the lack of nurse support staff, the nurse who was supposedly looking after jack was also prosecuted and found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter in 2015 and was subsequently removed from the nursing and midwifery register. No one has questioned this decision so why is the decision to strike off the doctor being questioned? It seems to me that the doctors are sticking together, maybe to cover up more mistakes like those made by Bawa Garba on that day in 2011. I wouldn’t want this woman caring for me or my child knowing that she was found guilty of manslaughter 2 years ago. The mistakes made by the doctor were described as “truly exceptionally bad” by the jury in 2015, is this someone who can be trusted to treat patients? I think not!
@drimranhaq

Sophie Probert the initial medical tribunal took all the points into consideration that the criminal court didn’t (probably because it doesn’t understand the complex nature of healthcare) and decided she wasn’t to be struck off. The ire amongst doctors is the fact that GMC took its own tribunal to court to reverse this. The nurse is almost suicidal and wishes for complete privacy with no public campaigns or media mentions - healthcare practitioners are respecting those wishes otherwise believe me, you’d see us protesting on the streets for her as well. Hospitals are businesses. They only look out for one thing. This is encouraged wholeheartedly by the government institutions they report to.

Ana P totally with you. Jacks family has been fighting for this for the last 7 years and when they finally got justice, they have to continue seeing this woman’s face all over the news. I wouldn’t want her looking after my children, they should just leave her as struck off. Maybe the doctors need to read the court transcripts and get their facts right before sticking up for something that they do not quite fully understand. All that money raised should be donated to Jacks family for all the crap they have had to put up with as well as heartbreak of losing their son. I know his mum Nicola and she has been receiving private messages from people calling her a racist etc, makes me sick. Like she hasn’t been through enough, # Justice4Jack xxx
@sophieknapp9262
@sophieknapp9262 6 лет назад
The NHS Doc I appreciate your explanation but have you actually seen the court transcripts and the reason the GMC came to the decision to strike her off? If not I suggest you read them and you may have a different opinion. It’s not in the interest of the public for her to continue to be a doctor, I wouldn’t trust her to treat my children and neither would Mose parents if they knew all the facts. She should have been struck off 2 years ago along with the nurse when they were originally convicted of gross negligence manslaughter. No one in the public can trust them with that conviction. Her mistakes were described as “truly exceptionally bad” so why are you fighting for someone who is capable of making mistakes like the ones she did? If you actually know what the mistakes are, I do and that’s why I believe she should remain struck off. That money raise should be donated to jacks family for all the rubbish they are having to continue to put up with 7 years after their sons death. And they still have to see this woman’s face on the news on a daily basis, have they not been through enough? Not once did she apologise to jacks family or even seem remotely remorseful, however, nurse Amaro did apologise and was truly sorry for the mistakes she made, not that it changes anything. It seems to me that all the doctors behind her are just trying to cover up other mistakes the are being made and not picked up on. Any doctor whose patient dies under their care should be investigated to make sure that they aren’t also making the same mistakes as BawaGarba. She should accept her fate, at the end of the day it’s her own fault that she is in this situation, no one else’s. I don’t understand why people are making excuses for her. Did you also know that jacks family are received private messages with threats and being called racist? All because you doctors are making out she is innocent when she isn’t. It’s just wrong. Let the family be so they can finally grieve! #Justice4Jack

@jakkeday1
@jakkeday1 6 лет назад
Mr Colemore I won't bang on about the issues with big pharmaceutical companies. However the ACE inhibitor was completely detrimental in this case. ACE inhibitors cause vasodilation and lower blood pressure. Importantly in patients who are already septic and vasodilated, ACE inhibitors can render the resuscitative drugs ineffective. Similarly, general anaesthetic agents also cause your blood pressure to decrease, mainly due to their vasodilatory effects. This is why ACE inhibitors are universally the one class of drug omitted before a general anaesthetic. If they are not then the low blood pressure can be refractory to treatment. This child was vasodilated from sepsis and had initially improved with fluid therapy. An hour after his mother gave him the ACE inhibitor (which she should not have done) he had a cardiac arrest. The ACE inhibitor tipped him over the edge and helped rendered the resuscitative efforts futile. Dr Bawa Garba has been made a scapegoat because no one wants to hold the Trust, the hospital, the paediatric consultant body or the mother accountable.

@@andrewbocho3896 uhhhh, actually, for foreign doctors applying for full GMC Registration and to be on the roster as a qualified physician, they do have to prove English proficiency twice; once via examination (IELTS Academic Examination), and then a second time during an interview that's marked with a rubric that checks whether the doctor has adequate language/interpersonal skills. Also, I think it's speculation to blame foreign doctors for the current state of the nation in terms of healthcare. On the contrary, many trusts currently run because of International Medical Graduates doing the jobs that some UK Graduates can't or won't do for whatever reason. If you don't know what it's like going through medical school for many years, sacrificing your own selfish needs for this career; if you don't know what it's like working in the NHS with resources lacking, consultants and ancillary staff shortages and abysmal pay for all this effort, then I suggest you rather not talk about "rights". If she has conscience, she should show respect to the grieving parents & retire from the medical profession - there are lots of career options for her plus if she has any brain, since her face & name is out in the public, people will be avoiding her surgery that's why she should quit.

Don't presume anything love. Doctors work so hard to get into and through med school, under a lot of stress during training and always trying to deliver a good service yet people like you make all their good work look like a joke. Yes you've counted her mistakes, have you also taken time to count all the thousands of decisions she got right. Thousands are alive today all thanks to her. You can't possibly understand the full picture because you're just so bitter and obviously not in-tune with the system. How about you fight for justice for all the people that have been kept alive by doctors through out the years. People quickly forget how important and how big these decisions are when they get them right. Get them wrong and they come for you in the name of justice. What happened to Jack was very unfortunate (God rest his soul) and I am saddened by it. Locking this doctor up wouldn't change that. Moves like this actually destroys the morale in the work place. A lot of doctors are protesting because they understand this could have easily been them. They obviously mean well for everyone but how can you deliver quality care when you always have to look over your shoulder in a system that wouldn't support you when it gets real. You should use your energy and resources to help improve the system, be more constructive in your criticism and do something useful for society rather than spread your cancer around.
