With the release of the new Leatherman Bond and the upcoming Leatherman Curl, I thought I would take the opportunity to discuss UK legal multi tools from Leatherman. Specifically, what is the best option for UK users? I also have an idea for what I think could be the best option for a UK legal carry.

I've carried a Leatherman in the UK since about 93. Disarmed anti personnel mines and land mines with my original PST back in the day. I've carried a Surge with numerous bits and saw blades etc for about 12 years now. But it's always in my pack. Most days on my belt is a Wingman. I also carry a little money clip/coin purse with either a Squirt or Gerber Dime plus torch in it. Nitcore Tiki are an excellent addition to any EDC and I've supplemented my kit with them. It's a real shame what is happening in the UK at the moment with all the knife crime. It's spoilt it for responsible knife owners like myself. When I was a lad, most fathers and Grandfathers handed down their knives. I still have my Grandfathers Navy Jack knife, it served him all through WWII and numerous Artic supply runs. He always said every young man should have some coins and a pocket knife in his pocket. I've always lived by that tradition and now teach and preach responsible knife carry and ownership to my 3 sons. I've also found that most UK police I've spoke to over the years's are fine with multi-tool EDC kit. Have run through my gear a few times with them over the year's. They're more concerned with hooded teens with machetes down their tracksuits than middle aged white guy fighting the middle aged spread who looks like an architect and drives an old SAAB.
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 3 года назад
Actually that's what I think. If you're a middle aged guy with other EDC items like first aid kit, torch etc. on you too you probably wouldn't have too many problems with the police, in the very unlikely event that you were found carrying a multitool with a locking blade. For non-UK readers of these comments, hooded teens with machetes - or kitchen knives - down their tracksuits are a thing here in the UK.

Most of the arrests I've heard of for locking blades have been when people get arrested or stopped for something else and are searched or their vehicles searched, usually in urban areas. I've heard of one instance of police stopping builders when they were leaving a building site, checking tool boxes and arresting people for having locking blades but you don't know what else was happening on said site and if the CPS even prosecuted those arrests. I've never heard of police waiting around car parking onto Exmoor or the Peak District looking what sort of blade/multitool everyone has.

@@jelkel25 Stopping builders and checking their toolboxes is absurd and surely not legal! They could have hammers as well as Stanley or other fixed blade/locking knives in their toolboxes too but surely carrying tools of their trade is ''valid reason''. Otherwise they could just stake out restaurants where agency chefs go to work, every day there are hundreds of them on public transport in London and elsewhere carrying deadly long knives in their knife rolls! Or even just chefs who work in one restaurant, who don't want their stuff nicked by other thieving c@@ts that work there.

Thanks for taking the time to think of us in the UK, A knifeless Wave would definitely go down well. I'd keep anything that could be construed as a blade non locking so sadly the awl would probably need to be a slipjoint. I've worked in places where there's a no knife policy so something bladeless would fit the bill. All the best from Bonnie Scotland Cheers 🍻

Great video Ben. As someone based in the UK, a knifeless Leatherman with outside accessible tools, notably the scissors from the Surge would be a no brainer for me. Personally, I would like to see it with the 2 T Shank adapters as seen on the Surge, because having 2 of them adds the versatility of being able to use different saw blades and switch between a dual sided diamond file with different grits and the more aggressive files seen on the Knifeless Rebar. I'm undecided on the bit exchanger and the truss style driver because both offer the ability to switch bits using the relevant bit kit, however the truss style wins out slightly on the basis of offering the slightly longer reach and being able to get to screws set beneath the surface. Another one of the tools I'm undecided on is the microdriver, because I can see it being incredibly useful particularly for myself, because I wear glasses. However, it's incredibly rare that I find I need one when I'm away from the house and don't have access to my tools. Here's hoping Leatherman actually watch the videos, read the comments and decide to go ahead with a Knifeless line-up.

Replacing the two outside blades on the Wave+ with scissors and a package opener would be ideal for me. Adding an awl and or chisel in place of the internal scissors would make this a very good carry option for those of us who carry a pocket knife as well as the European interest. Package opening is 80% of my multitool blade use so the external location would be handy. I tend to think of the multitool as a way to not abuse my pocketknife. A stout knife can be a pry bar, scraper, chisel, and awl but it does not have to be if you are multitool equipped. My Rat 1 would be grateful for this.

I guess that in Curl, if they are going to use the liner lock platform and make a not-really-locking system,they probably have to make some kind of "beveled contact" between the liner lock spring and the blade tang, so that with enough force the tang could slide and push the spring down off its lock position.

Thanks for the video.When it comes to UK knife laws specifically effecting multi tools, the elephant is in the room on the Leatherman or more accurately in the chassis.Uk law states that the blade must be less than 3 inches.Both blades on the wave+ are 2 7/8 inches. The law also states that the blade must mechanically fold without having to press a release (non locking).This is the only issue I can see with the wave+.However,there is no need to remove either blade.All is required to do is remove the spring locking mechanism or file it back so the blade can no longer be locked.This minor mod even at manufacture stage would satisfy UK law as defined in the knife act.By removing the spring button,you transform the Wave into a pen knife multi tool.

I love the idea of a UK legal wave plus I would defo keep the mini screw driver tho for someone that wears glasses I like the idea of it being there you would have to get rid of the saw tho the UK legal rebar isn't 100% legal with it having the saw and even the locking awl they still count as a blade

Maybe it isn't easy to accomodate backsprings in a plier based multitool - although LM already have done in the Juice series - but I don't understand why LM and more specifically Victorinox haven't released multitools with slipjoint blades, or all tools slipjoint. So a Swisstool with slipjoint blades as Vic have plenty of know-how with slipjoints. Or imagine a Juice design but with the two plier handles being alox Victorinoxes, incorporating their excellent scissors, saw, inline reamer, a file and inline Phillips.

Impo the bladeless Rebar is what we in the UK call a 'lash-up'. The file sits by the cut-out in the handle and mine went rusty from palm sweat real quick. Not being a fan of having a rusty, abrasive thing incorporated into a tool handle, my file is now covered in electrical tape

They should just release a version of the wave with slip joints for the knives and saw. I’ve modded mine by filing the ends of the locks down slightly. I am a little skeptical the knifeless rebar is legal. Are you sure the saw wouldn’t classify as a blade? What are your thoughts of rather than a liner lock they replace that with a ramped slip liner lock? Rather than locking into place it would just gain added retention as it slips into place?
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 3 года назад
Not the saw but the reamer is locking and the Section 139a of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 is worded that it is ''prohibited to carry without valid reason a bladed or pointed article in public'' (unless it's a folding blade with a cutting length under 3 inches). The reamer is pointed. It's ridiculous I know but to the letter of the law that makes the knifeless Rebar a bit iffy here in the UK. I carry Gerber MP600, the (removable) remgrit saw on that cannot be construed as a bladed or pointed object.

UK law states that certain items may not be openly carried without lawful authority or reasonable excuse. Professional users can carry and use locking blade tools while working. Chefs may carry knives to and from their place of work in a suitable container. The law is intended to prevent teenagers carrying machetes, screwdrivers, chisels and similar items meant to inflict harm on others. UK Health and Safety regulations actively preclude the use of slip joint tools in certain areas of professional use. So if you have a professional reason to require a lock knife and single handed opening, that is perfectly legal in the UK. You may not however carry such tools on a casual trip out or visiting a pub, restaurant or cinema. Makes perfect sense to us Brits.

Great to see a video aimed at UK folks! I don't want this to come across as a criticism or harsh, but I think there's a bit of a disconnect between you and the reality of the UK: You mention that there's plenty of secondhand Waves out there, this is true and getting them is possible, but they can't be sold on Ebay here which makes it far, far more difficult. You also say you get what you pay for and I definitely agree with that, but you have to bear in mind that any Leatherman tool sold in the UK is greatly marked up, to but a Bond here is the equivalent of about $84 for instance. So the more expensive the base tool in the states the larger the knock on effect (for reference when I looked into a knifeless Rebar myself, they were over £90 on Amazon or around $125, there has to come a point where the tool just isn't worth the mark up) Love the suggestion of the outside folding scissors though!

Yep the only place I know where you can pick up second hand multitools in the UK is Shpock and sometimes you can get a real bargain on a Leatherman. I bought both my Leathermans as ''seconds'' from multitool-store.co.uk, as both had an ''overwritten engraving'' which is basically a small ground rectangle, the Squirt PS4 has it on the non-logo side of the handles and cost me £28, and I got a Rebar from them for £50, the rectangle where the engraving was ground out is on the knife blade, in neither case is any functionality impaired, nor even the aesthetics really. Having said that they haven't had any of these seconds on their site for quite a while now, apart from a Tread I think, which I'm really not into. But I'm pretty sure you can get a knifeless Rebar for about £75-80 if you shop around online, not on Amazon though. It's crazy how cheap some yt commenters pick up multitools for on special offer in US stores, and how much more we pay for them here in the UK and Europe, even US branded multitools which are made in China (some SOGs and Gerbers).

One important thing to know is: Knife laws in Europe sometimes distinguish between owning, carry, and transport. They also distinguish between public and private places. "Good reason" is usually used to lift the restrictions for transport. Here is a scenario that brings all of that together and i try to not be to specific for any country. I don't know the details for UK and this thread is about the UK: If you are a Millwright you probably want to use a multitool. You are allowed to buy that and own it. No Problem with the surge or wave or whatever. You are allow to transport in usually closed containers, sheets usually are not considered to be closed containers. But have it in a tool box is no problem. On site you can take it out and use it on the construction site. Now you have a good reason to use it: Millwright on construction site. When you get hungry and want to go to the restaurant across the street you will loose that good reason. So you would have to put your multi tool into your toolbox. Also you have to argue with the police wether you have a good reason or not. This packing away and argueing is something most europeans don't want to put up with and then skip out on the purchase. Also the thinkling about what is a good reason. Most of the Time good reason are base on work: then you have to be working and not taking a break. and leisure: hunting, fishing etc. however as already mention: the attitude test is the most important thing here

The leatherman bond complies with UK EDC laws. There's no stipulation on how easily a blade can fold, just that it does not lock. Which brings me on to a small pet hate. 😁 "UK legal" isn't really applicable here, knives that aren't UK legal are things like balisongs and flick knives. Locking folders and all fixed blades are UK legal. The law here is EDC legal. Meaning you don't need to be able to articulate a reason for carrying it. I EDC a surge any other leatherman and often wear fixed blades on my belt perfectly legal

The problem is that the law does not define "lock" or "fold". The blade on the bond can fold to some extent, but cannot fold completely closed since the handle would stop it. From that, how much movement do you have to have in the blade before it is no longer classified as "locking"? I contacted leatherman to ask for their justification for calling it "UK EDC legal" and the response I got was pretty much that because the blade can move at all, that is enough to no longer classify it as locking. They did however also say that their interpretation of the law is only an opinion, and that until someone actually gets taken to court over it we won't have any sort of definite legal standing for the wave.
