Uki Uki Japanese Lesson 31 Idioms
Welcome to Uki Uki NihonGO! + Culture
Today, we’re studying 四字熟語 (yoji jukugo): Japanese 4-character idioms.
四字熟語 can convey a lot. This is possible because each Kanji character has a meaning. That’s why Kanji phrases are succinct yet powerful.
Here are several 四字熟語 we’re introducing today.
one stone, two birds
一石二鳥 (isseki nichou) = to kill two birds with one stone
日本語を勉強したから、日本人の友達とも話せるし、アニメもわかるようになって一石二鳥です。
weak meat, strong eat
弱肉強食 (jakuniku kyoushoku) = survival of the fittest, cut-throat
金融ビジネスは、弱肉強食の世界だ。
old, present, east, west
古今東西 (kokon touzai) = universal, all time and places
古今東西、モーツアルトの音楽は人々に愛されている。
previous generation, not yet heard
前代未聞 (zendai mimon) = unheard-of, unprecedented
この時期に雪が降るなんて前代未聞だ。
dangerous chance, single hair
危機一髪 (kiki ippatsu) = by a hair’s breadth, touch and go, close call, critical moment
危機一髪の所で、ヒーローが現れた。
Some 四字熟語 gives advice.
first hand, definite victory
先手必勝 (sente hisshou) = victory goes to the one who makes the first move, the early bird gets the worm
今日の試合は、先手必勝で行くぞ!
one’s life, risk life
一生懸命 (isshou kenmei) = with utmost effort, with all your might
一生懸命がんばれば、きっと結果に繋がるよ。
And some 四字熟語 tells you what NOT to do.
needle small, stick large
針小棒大 (shinshou boudai) = exaggeration, to make a mountain out of a molehill
何でも針小棒大に言うのは悪い癖だ。
eight directions, pretty person
八方美人 (happou bijin) = a person who shows people what they want to see but not their true self
あの人は八方美人だから、あの人の約束はあまり当てにならない。
three day, monk apprentice
三日坊主 (mikka bouzu) = monk for three days, person who cannot stick to anything
何をやっても三日坊主なんです。I can’t stick to anything very long.
self portrait, self praise
自画自賛 (jiga jisan) = to sing one’s own praises
自画自賛はみっともない。
self action, self receive
自業自得 (jigou jitoku) = to pay for one’s mistakes, reap what you saw
博打ばかりして破産するなんて、自業自得だ。
This is a particularly beautiful 四字熟語:
one chance, one encounter
一期一会 (ichigo ichie) = once-in-a-lifetime encounter, hence should be cherished as such
人生は一期一会。人との出会いを大切にしましょう。

So good, so good! I'm glad I found this gem! I have 30 more lessons to check out, so excited! Edit: I just realized you had the whole thing in the description box as well! You're doing this so right!! Love it Edit2: 一生懸命 is gonna be on my wall along with 一期一会! I'm learning the stroke order and writing them myself instead of printing them.

+Abdulrahman Majash Thanks very much for the comment! Yes, we have plenty of content to checkout! Previous series include Waku Waku (which has around 45+ episodes) and Japanese Lessons that teach the basics (24 lessons). Kurahara-sensei teaches at our Language Center in NYC, which is a great resource, so we're happy to provide it to viewers online as well!

Yea I did some searching and found the Waku Waku series along with other great series you've made, it's quite exciting (わくわく haha) so I'm savoring every video. Also thanks for bringing Kurahara-sensei to us, the viewers! She's quite great! I'm pretty envious of those who learn at her hands. Keep up the good work! And forward my thanks to the whole team who made this happen. Good thing I have some content to keep me busy while I wait for your new stuff!

+Kurahara Sensei I've been self-studying Japanese for a bit now. It's quite fun (especially how Kanji combines!) but I kinda get burned out between the grammar, vocab, and Kanji sometimes. This series helps bring a different aspect of the Japanese language and culture that I wouldn't have otherwise been exposed to if I was just studying the language (anime and manga can only do so much as well ). Add that to the quality of your work, your enthusiasm, and interaction with the audience.. I can't say but that I'm quite inspired and motivated by that to learn more. 本当にありがとうございます! ^-^

+Tarek AL-Jawi Kanji is a complex, yet extremely interesting part of Japanese study. Mr. Usagi Holmes seems to be focusing on Japanese grammar right now, but I'll be sure to relay your message to him. (^^)

面白いレッスンです。 会話する時に、四字熟語を使ったら、多分日本人の友達をびっくりさせると。笑 ちなみに、ちょっと聞きたいことがあるんですが、びびるってどういう意味ですか。なんか英和辞書を引いて、get nervousという意味で、ベトナム和辞書の場合はshameといみ意味があります。どんなことが正しいかと教えて頂ければ幸いです。

Hello! I hope someone could answer this.. What is the difference between 「ねる」 and 「ねむる」? They both mean 'sleep' (verb)..
@STPmanga
@STPmanga 6 лет назад
Sorry this comes so late but basically "neru" means "to go to sleep (in the bed)" while "nemuru" means "to fall asleep without the bed (to fall asleep while watching a movie, falling asleep while standing/sitting etc.). There are cases in which you can use both for ex. "Kanojo wa nemashita/nemurimashita" (she went to sleep/fell asleep) and some phrases and other stuff. You can only use "neru" when talking about going to sleep for ex. Itsumo juujikan ni nemasu (I always go to sleep at 10) and "nemuru" for this kind of situation: eiga wo mite, nemurimashita (I watched a movie and fell asleep (without going to bed). Compare the sentences "eiga wo mite, nemashita" (I watched a movie and went to sleep) and "eiga wo mite, nemurimashita" (I watched a movie and fell asleep (almost like immediately)) I hope this helped!
