Ukitake Jushiro: THE WASTED POTENTIAL | BLEACH: Character Analysis 

Nice to see you criticizing the series. It has it's faults but don't let this distract you from the fact that bungee gum has the properties of both rubber and gum.

His humanity was his greatest strength and him encouraging his subordinates to do what's morally right contrasted and balanced with friend Shunsui's willingness to get deadly. It's a pity he suffered from such a disease but in the end he died to save everyone. A true pillar of goodness if there ever was one among Shinigami, definitely someone I'd trust.

He’s wasted in terms of combat sure, but his influence on other characters and his integrity are really well executed throughout the series.

He's such an underrated character I love him he's noble honorable captain obviously and makes him stand out to me his optimistic nature

Tite Kubo is surely gonna add alot of things in the anime like Rangiku's backstory and all as we know why.....but I hope Ukitake's scene in the anime is extended and made more emotional.

I think one detail you missed was when Ukitake stated to Shunsui that he prepared the kamikaze, that although Shunsui lightheartedly teased Ukitake, at the same time he moved his hat to conceal his eyes. He was obviously aware that he will lose a dear friend that he knew since his childhood days and was downplaying his sadness.

He's so cool and strong that the story required him to be bed-ridden/sick so he doesn't take away the spotlight from the main character/s.

Breaks my heart that jushiro had to suffer for all of those minutes while mimihagi was ascending… I was happy when he finally passed away. He is a great man. His character is inspiring. His sacrifice brings tears to my eyes actually. I was so relieved when he finally got to rest. Only to find himself in the depths of hell. This man is the hero of the series. RIP Jushiro Ukitake

The Gentle Character Who Fights Only To Protect Those He Cares For. Awesome Character.

I hope we get to see Ukitake fight a quincy, his shikai is perfect for fighting them.

I'm sad that we didn't see Ukitsakes and Rukias relationship. She was his Lieutenant after all, and I was hoping to see them two interact together a little bit more. Rip Ukitake, my favourite Capitain

Hes my favorite in all of bleach. I always remember how hurt I felt about his overall story. He was such an honorable and strong (in how he cares about people) character that I'll always remember how he was sooo let down in his story! 🥺

I don’t really watch Anime, but these character analysis’s really help understand why some shows have a lot of solid story telling and growth, as well as the harsh truths of some realities normal tv shows can’t really pull off. You make good videos, that’s why I’m subscribed. That, and the hour long vids are great for getting to sleep. Seriously, it helps for some reason so I appreciate it.

Very common misconception shunsui wasn't running from Yamamoto trying to avoid the fight.. he was running to an area with no people because he knew the battle would be such that it would claim the lives of anyone close enough to see what was happening.. he did flat out say he was hoping to avoid fighting the head captain... but he didn't attempt to flee just to move the battle to an area with nobody close by who could get hurt. He even took his lieutenant to a safe distance. The biggest reason he didn't even try to get away and hide from Yamamoto was because he knew that was impossible. Yamamoto would've caught him with the same ease as you or I catching a stationary rock lol 😆

I really badly wanted to see Ukitake and Unohana's Bankais in Bleach. After all, basically every time someone releases their bankai it's a big deal and the abilities are usually very coo to understand.

To me Ukitake was like that laid back uncle you have that sometimes gives you good advice.

He's a really good character he's wasted tho tbh not exactly wasted that's the thing with kubo he makes his characters so unique and interesting but doesn't care to handle them in the best way that's mainly because some characters aren't meant to be important he's such a great writer that even characters that aren't supposed to be important are unique

I always wondered how strong this guy would be if he didn't have an illness. The new Hell Arc will give us that opportunity.

I am so happy to see an analysis on Ukitake, he has been one of my favorite characters since I’ve began watching/reading bleach when I was around 12-13 years so to have him go out in the way he did ... honestly it made me bitter to some degree and I still am over it. Big plot hole, lack of fanfare - and I know war is war but honestly it felt like such an epic moment that at least might’ve had weight in the war was just thrown to the side. I sincerely hope the anime either expands or revamps his role. Would be nice if we ever do get some information on his bankai, I completely agree with you on all aspects of his battle and development there just getting thrown away. So much information and you are so right, "wasted potential" is a very apt description of his character. Ukitake was sort of the man behind the scenes and yet he was Soul Societys' guide to justice. Thanks, this is a great video, there is so much I use for my Bleach fanfic.

I think Ukitake is quite the character. One whos nature teaches us to be accepting of others , compassionate in life and to be grateful and appreciative of every breath we have especially the ones taken with ease. Ukitake may have gotten the short straw yet I still fully love and appreciate his character . Once again thank you for this passionate and informative video Mr DBZImran. Controversial opinion: if the badge really did track and suppress Ichigo's reiatsu, that's a good thing. 1) Captain and lieutenant level shinigami have to have their reiatsu suppressed in the world of the living. 2) At war, I'd wanna know where my nukes are too. You know?

I hope Kubo shows us Ukitakes bankai in the new hell arc😫. Man I always thought Ukitake was really interesting. I mean he was one the captains who questioned the justice and the system of the soul society and had connections to really important characters like Ichigo ( substitute badge), Ginjo, Shunsui, Soul king, Rukia (he was her captain), Yamamoto, Kaien and even Aizen (before Aizen left soul society, Ukitake confronted Aizen and asked what his goal was. And Aizen basically said he wanted to replace/kill the Soul King. Very ironic because Ukitake is the right hand of the Soul King. What's even more iconic is the fact that in next chapter cover after the mimihagi (stagnation) reveal we switch to Aizen (evolution) in the muken.) I just hope Kubo fleshes out Ukitakes character in the TYBW anime and in the new hell arc.

Really cool character, loved how he was always looking out for Ichigo. When Ichigo came back after the Fullbring you could FEEL his worries and exhaustion lifted from his shoulders when he saw how Ichigo was after everything. Would I call him wasted potential? Hmmmm not entirely. What ive noticed in stories is that, if your following a character, some people in their lives will be more prevalent than others. Just like real life, you will never know what everyone you met is doing or meet them often. Did Ukitake deserve more screen time? Sure but of what exactly? We never know what Byakuya does alot in between Soul Society and Arrancar arcs with his appearances canonically being....brief but effective because they are battles. Lets be real, how many times have we have seen Kenpachi as well? Because they are in the Soul Society and belong there, we arent going to see everyone more like we wanted. We do see a handful come to the world of the living for more interactions but that is also a temporarily meeting. Im mixed and conflicted. Im pretty sure if we had seen Ukitake and Shunsui fight the Head Captain...like a FULL LENGTH fight probably spamming 2-3 chapters and for the anime spamming 2 episodes...then we all wouldve been satisified.

The fact that for 366 (!) episodes we never even saw him properly fighting, instead being Kyoraku's sidekick, is infuriating. I have a real trouble, deciding, which one of the 3 captains: Komamura, Soifon or Ukitake was treated the worst.

I genuinely wanted him to become the next soul king. I feel like he would have bought an age of complete stability. (I was cursing out Yhwach when he stole mimihagi from Ukitake)

Crazy Theory Time: Yhwach’s threat that he would return was NOT foreshadowing to chapter 686 when we saw his spiritual pressure vanish. No. It is foreshadowing to what I think will be the absolute bat shit insane finale to the sequel of Bleach: Burn The Witch. Let me explain. I predict there will be 3 major arcs to Burn The Witch. They are 1 The English Arc 2 The French Arc 3 The German Arc Now of course this is a guess but there is reason to think it will happen. Since the story starts off in London I will call the current arc The English Arc. After comes the French Arc. Years ago there was an interview about Kubo wanting to do a French arc for Bleach and well that never happened. But Burn The Witch is the perfect opportunity for Kubo to explore France in his manga. Ninny is a English word and she was the protagonist of the first arc or what I call the English arc. Naturally it would make sense for the next arc to be about Noel and guess what? Noel is a French word. The third and final arc is the German Arc. Why Germany? Because that is where the Marchen or Fairy Tales were born. So if the finale will be in Germany it seems natural they will pass through France first. So what does Yhwach have to do with all this? A LOT. Or at least I predict so. The Quincy in Bleach are highly influenced by German culture and although I dunno if it was ever said outright I think Yhwach’s original Quincy kingdom was set in Germany or at least the Bleach version of Germany. In fact I think the original Blood Warfare was NOT between Quincy and Soul Reapers but Quincy vs the Humanoid races of Bleach It was Bleach version of World War. Soul Society came later and Yamamoto burned all of the Quincy to ashes. Thus ending the war. Or so they thought Yhwach had control of the Marchen when he was alive. It’s a guess but it be bad ass. Yhwach may return to life to regain that power. How you may ask? Zombiepowder. In Kubo’s previous work Zombiepowder there was a substance called Zombiepowder that could revive the dead but you had to find the 12 rings of the dead. What if they are in Europe? Not only that but what if Zombiepowder are the ashes of Yhwach’s original human body? Or maybe the ashes of the Soul King? What if someone wants to bring Yhwach back? Sure it’s very wishful thinking But how bad ass would it be to see an older Elwood in Kubo’s new art style? Plus by having the original Blood Warfare be told in Burn The Witch rather than Bleach it allows a different perspective. Finally Yhwach flying on a dragon is just too bad ass to not happen.

I’m Not a huge fan of bleach but I do enjoy it and appreciate it. Ukitake was such an awesome Character being built up. It’s soo off the way he ended. Almost as if the plans for him were constantly in the air. Just to have them fall like that. The moment he released against Yamamoto... man I wanted soo much more

I thought his zanpaktou spirit was weird in the Zanpaktou Rebellion arc where it was twins that looked like him with a pair of fans but it made more sense after we learn about the right arm of the Soul King that it represents Ukitake as a child at age 3 and one represents him as a child while the other represents Mimihagi.

My first Bleach episode i ever saw was episode 49, and because i was a very nerdy, very lonely little kid (and because Ukitake is amazing) I latched on to him. To this day my favourite number is 13 because of this sadly underused anime character and i just really wish his death had had purpose.. like it was genuinely heartwrenching.

I really do hope Ukitake gets fleshed out more when the anime returns. Honestly one of the most interesting characters yet so little was done with him. With how much Shunsui has been present in the anime and with his role at the middle of the TYBW I can't help but feel he was robbed. I do hope he gets a more complete finale in the end but for now I'll just have to watch these video 😃.

My thinking is that Kubo was making Ukitake to be a bigger character towards the end, but alas, his (Tite Kubo) own health dictated things and forced the ending we got. Hopefully, with Kubo making new chapters after resting up, we get to see Ukitake in the light he deserves to be in, even if it is flashbacks.

I think that's why Ukitake was the main focus of the Hell Arc one shot. Think he'll get his dues if that is ever continued.

To be honest, I always thought that leaving someone with immense power under no one's supervision would be pretty reckless. Moreover, that power would be abused by anyone besides Ichigo. That's why I had no qualms about Ukitake spying on Ichigo through the combat pass.

He's like the Chad of the captains. I feel they both are so built up to get short strawed. He's one of my fav captains and would love to see more. I even looked chad as a character but they made him to be the strongest chump in the group. I wish both would have been written differently

Honestly I feel Wonderweiss taking Ukitake out was kind of a cop-out for Starrk. Ukitake was just to much of a hard counter to what Starrk could really do. Having Shunsui as Ukitake's tag partner would've made an absolute joke of what was supposed to be the "Primera Espada".

Ukitake's story is not finished since recently Kubo published NEW CHAPTER of Bleach it is kinda promising... maybe there will be next arc? something like "War in hell"? I very much hope so.

I can relate to Ukitaki. I have been sick for a long time. I had a very bad reaction to the Anthrax Vaccine in the Army back in the Gulf days and it's getting worse with age but you push on. I would love to see more stories and flashbacks with him in the future. His demise was pitiful and he deserved a better ending.

As a chronically ill person I would say it's nice, that the focus was on him as a person rather than his battles. It's always more about the journey rather than the milestones for us. And the right hand is a great analogy for exchanging a disease for the sideeffects of the medicine for a life. We don't know when will our health decline so the everydays are more precious than getting a job or finishing a project.

Great character analysis!! As you mentioned Ukitake truly was the paternal figure of Soul Society. He had the perfect combination of kindness and cleverness. Even though he was constantly bed bound due to his illness, his spirit of determination seemed to compensate his situation. His Shikai would have been an interesting choice against Barragan, or against any other quincy. But it seems Kubo wanted to keep him as a gentleman, loving and caring to his subordinates. Honestly I was fine with that too! I hope you'll achieve your milestone of 50 k subscribers, as I am truly curious as how Ichigo will perform under your spotlight! Congratulations!!

Jushiro! He had potential, and maybe we’ll see it in the final arc of the anime. You know when you think about it he could actually be the lungs of the soul king in a way as well as the right arm lol. I really love how he encourages lillynete keep trying to fight him and not give up even though it’s obvious she’s losing and failing miserably. Damn this is just a good guy. Interesting enough jushiro kinda represents kubo, or at least a part of him when it come to the health aspect.
