A WSJ article reports that four Russian ships were damaged by Sea Baby deployed mines near Crimea. A Bora-class hovercraft, a Project 22160 Pavel Dezhavin are confirmed. The others are likely a Stenka class patrol boat and an Alexandrit-class minesweeper.

Well technically by now they do have a small navy lol. Its just mostly drones like these ones, so very unconventional but highly effective! And comparing the russian navy to the American, which has been under fire from hundreds if not thousands of drones and missiles for the past 8 months yet hasnt taken even a single casualty or damage to a single ship while largely not even being allowed to strike back at the launchers in yemen by the corrupt, inept and cowardly biden administration (the same admin who keeps feet dragging and groveling to russia every time ukraine needs anything) and it paints an even more hilarious picture of the incompetent russian navy😂

Given that the ONLY russian aircraft carrier only leaves port, (where is lives for repair and rebuild) when a sea-going tug escorts it. Probably the problem with mine-laying drones is that they cannot carry much explosives. Less explosives means less damage. Also, to maximize damage, the blast should be delivered at a distance, not in contact. So proximity sensors need to be developed. I am sure Ukraine is already thinking about this. Finally, unlike the Sea Baby, a mine cannot decide where to strike and pick the spot where it will do the most damage. In general, it will hit the bow, which is the most resistant part of a ship.
@cmtwgrdk2748
@cmtwgrdk2748 6 дней назад
a mine that wait on the bottom, can be made to go up, and hit where it is told to hit,also at a distance to make the hydraulic push to the hull , the drone dont have to carry the mine, it can drag it /tow it ,, a torpedo that waits to do its trick, will be called a mine ,, .. we will se more of this, and china will watch,, this is what will become a problem if they try to invade Taiwan
@SonsOfLorgar
@SonsOfLorgar 5 дней назад
You are severely underestimating both mines and sea babys. 1st. A mine carrying sea bayby either doesn't carry any other major payload other than a grenade launcher or .50 HMG for self defense. That leaves roughly 800 kg carrying capacity for a sea mine which is pretty much standard size, 200kg of mine body and electronics, 600kg of high explosives like Hexotol or Torpex. OR, the mine is fitted with a remote operated towing system, as a sea mine is, by necessity, buoyant at a preset depth. Aditionally, any electronics that can be fitted in a drone can be fitted in a sea mine, electronics like a passive IFF sensor that reads civilian and friendly IFF transponders and only activates on a false or lack of civilian or friendly IFF ID codes as well as limited propulsion and/or a magnetic and acoustic sensor fuse.
@paulmariu
@paulmariu 5 дней назад
@@SonsOfLorgarI really appreciate your comment, but it doesn't change my thinking much. Carrying a single mine would not make much sense, so the cargo will be split. Also, underwater radio wave propagation is virtually nonexistent. This rules out listening for transponders or remote control unless you use an antenna. But it only makes sense to place a mine on the busiest routes, and the antenna would be easily spotted. Maybe not by the navy of the mighty Black Sea Fleet, but don't count on it. LOL

Possibly this was a proof-of-technology test run, before committing to production and deployment at scale. The effectiveness of the weapon, and the effectiveness of Russian reactions/counter-measures, need to be assessed before an extensive mining campaign can be mounted. A lot of Ukraine's weapons and tactics seem to start at the guy-in-his-garage level, and get ramped up when it's clear they work in the field. Even with Ukrainian determination and ingenuity, not everything can be done at once. Slava Ukraina.

Ukraine is in the same, if not worse, shit they were just a few months ago when they had to retreat and cede territory - they just have enough ammo now. Looking at that picture I must give a shout out to the unsung heroes of the Russian navy...the tugboats! They keep the navy moving.😂😂😂

I guess that camouflage was not a Harry Potter invisibility cloak.

Notably, in this part of the world "grenade" can be used to describe an rpg warhead, we've seen this type of weaponry on sea babys

they lost 4 fast patrol boats tuna class from the attack where a seababy took out the booms and the other one followed through the gap

Now we need some Sea babies with retractable wings to get them in the Sea of Azov.🤔

Yes it seems that the Stinker class patrol boat was the fourth.

I think the reason is cause sea baby can only carry 2 mines so they're reluctant to waste a bunch of sea babys. I assume they will modify them to carry more and we will see more mines being used.

Wouldn't be surprised if Russia was just so high on their own copium that they didn't expect actual mines anywhere near Crimea so the anti-mine ships were relaxed and didn't even try to search for mines. Would also explain why there are no new reports if the Russians started to actually patrol near Crimea to search for mines.

Explains why Russian dolphin pens showed up in Sevastopol in November. Finding the pens might help find the logistics fleet.

It looks like a large dog aboard that raptor class boat. This, of course, is Ruzzia's air defence warning system.

I know that war isn't a game, but I've been thinking that there will certainly be games like RTS that are set in Ukraine/Donbas in the future.
