Farage ignores the long lasting expansionism of Russia itself, spanning from attacking Finland, striking a deal with Hitler to grab Polish land, flattening Grozni, 1956 occupy Hungary, 1967 striking down Chzech uprising, 2008 grabbing a chunk of Georgia, occupying part of Moldova, 2014 starting yet another land grab in Ukraine. Small wonder that countries wish to join NATO to put a stop to that.

36:30 - I cherish my individuality. A former member of the military, critical of Farage, ardently leftist, and in favour of the EU. While my family regrets their choice, I opted to vote "Remain." I acknowledge that within the veteran community, and even among current members, there is a tendency towards the right wing of the Conservative party. However, I firmly believe there is strong support for Ukraine's right to self-defence and self-determination. It is worth noting that there have been instances of both former and current British military personnel joining the International Legion. Furthermore, despite my left-leaning tendencies, I support the monarchy. This demonstrates that the traditional left/right political spectrum is not always accurate.

just a ps. When talking about NATO, I think it is important to start using "NATO Alliance". Because that's what it is; an alliance, not an entity. People like Meirsheimer and Farage bank upon the idea that it's this monstrous entity. Which it can't be, by its very nature. Even the EU goes further, since it's a Union, not an Alliance.

Correction JP,NATO invaded Afghanistan to punish the militants that the US accused of 9/11,when the real culprits were Saudi Arabia.Biggest joke was that the militants had formally been supported by the US against Russia.This is what really pisses me off about the lack of vigorous support for Ukraine who are arguably involved in the most morally defensible position as victims of an imperialistic invasion that we have seen since WWII.Slava Ukraine!!

As I pointed out the other day, Guardianista leftist hysteria can easily backfire. This issue was never a real talking point amongst the centre right in the UK. It is now. Farage made a great speech at Maidstone with a huge pic of Boris Johnson to a crowd, that's now all over social media. Russell Brand has jumped on the band wagon, he's backing Farage now. The average potential Reform voter likely views the 'News Agents' as part of the problem, given the unlikely chance they view it ;) though personally I'm a fan.
@rbir2653
@rbir2653 4 дня назад
The farage war of words is irrelevant. The question to ask is what is the party policy on helping Ukraine. Richard Tice supports Ukraine and drove aid to Kyiv. I have no idea what the reform policy is. I won't vote for a party that isn't 100% behind Ukraine.

The 19 November 1999 OSCE Charter for European Security was signed 6 months after Poland Czechia and Hungary had been admitted to NATO. By clause 8 Russia specifically blessed NATO "expanding" gaining new members. "Reaffirm the inherent right... to choose ... treaties of alliance". Viktor Orban knows, he signed the Charter in person.
@CAsCurryKitchen
@CAsCurryKitchen 4 дня назад
Jonathan you often mention that there was no agreement between NATO and Russia along the lines of NATO agreeing never to expand eastward. But I think it might be a bit more nuanced than that. According to a chat I had with an AI, NATO agreed not to base troops into former soviet-block countries that were then, or would become, independant from Russia. The AI said: "Yes, it's fair to say that NATO has indeed broken the spirit, if not the letter, of the 1991 agreement. By deploying troops and military assets in Eastern European countries, NATO has essentially sidestepped the commitment not to deploy troops on the territory of new independent states. While NATO has maintained that these deployments are temporary, rotational, and aimed at deterring Russian aggression, Russia has consistently viewed them as a violation of the 1991 agreement. Russia's concerns about NATO's expansion and military presence in Eastern Europe have been a significant source of tension in relations between NATO and Russia. In a way, NATO's actions can be seen as a gradual erosion of the spirit of cooperation and trust established in 1991. The alliance's efforts to enhance regional security and deter Russian aggression have led to a re-alignment of forces in the region, which has contributed to the current tensions between NATO and Russia." So assuming (I know!) the AI isn't hallucinating, I can see why Russia now may be getting a bit edgy. It still doesn't justify what Putin is doing but it appears it isn't as clear cut as you sometimes make out.
@putin-khuylo_putin-khuylo
@putin-khuylo_putin-khuylo 2 дня назад
Your AI must be taking its input from elon muskovite's feed. This is nonsense. No 1991 agreement with NATO but there is one with r@ssiya and Ukraine. Look up that. From NATO's site (fact not AI fiction): NATO promised Russia it would not expand after the Cold War FACT Such an agreement was never made. NATO’s door has been open to new members since it was founded in 1949. This has never changed. No treaty signed by NATO Allies and Russia included provisions on NATO membership. Decisions on NATO membership are taken by consensus among all Allies. Russia does not have a veto. The idea of NATO enlargement beyond a united Germany was not on the agenda in 1989, particularly as the Warsaw Pact still existed until 1991. Mikhail Gorbachev said in an interview in 2014: "The topic of 'NATO expansion' was not discussed at all, and it wasn't brought up in those years. I say this with full responsibility. Not a single Eastern European country raised the issue, not even after the Warsaw Pact ceased to exist in 1991. Western leaders didn't bring it up either." Individual Allies cannot make agreements on NATO’s behalf. President Clinton consistently refused Boris Yeltsin's offer to commit that no former Soviet Republics would join NATO: "I can't make commitments on behalf of NATO, and I'm not going to be in the position myself of vetoing NATO expansion with respect to any country, much less letting you or anyone else do so… NATO operates by consensus," he said. The wording “NATO expansion” is already part of the myth. NATO did not hunt for new members or want to “expand eastward.” NATO respects every nation’s right to choose its own path. NATO membership is a decision for NATO Allies and those countries who wish to join alone.

Responsibility and Causation are often conflated by certain ideologies as a means of transferring blame wherever they like. Causation is complex and it is valid to say 'the universe(or God if a magic believer) causes everything and it is vapid. One can then go on to try and find more proximal causes using Science. Moral Responsibility is about holding people and institutions to account for choices that they make. Farage is trying to have both his cake and eat it, tepidly holding putin to account for his choices whilst justifying his bad choices by blaming "the West/EU/NATO" for then causing what putin did. That is an incoherent moral philosophy which does naught but reveal his real ideological leanings.

Reminder for my fellow Americans on the Sergei Skripal incident: the "Moscow 10" were Russian sleeper agents in the New York City area in the 2000's conducting subversion, intelligence & sabotage operations in the US as part of the Russian "Illegals" program. After they were discovered & arrested, Sergei Skripal was one of the people exchanged by Russia for the Moscow 10. The Moscow 10 are now famous & celebrated in Russia for their work hurting the US. Anybody saying that these issues don't directly involve the US have either forgotten, never knew about, or are actively ignoring the Russian Illegals & Active Measures programs in the US, which did not end with the Cold War and continue to this day.
