Join us in Lviv, Ukraine for a Ukrainian food review as we sample a number of different traditional ukrainian dishes such as banosh and varenyky along with eating pork leg and a ukrainian style cheesecake for dessert just to name a few. Our goal was to find a traditional style of Ukrainian restaurant with an interesting atmosphere and great Ukrainian cuisine. After doing a bit of research we settled on a place called 7 Piggies serving up traditional Ukrainian food. The following is a list of all of the food items we sampled in Lviv, Ukraine: (sorry we forgot to do price point so we've listed the prices below straight from the website menu of the restaurant)
1) Banosh (Банош) or Banusz with egg, brynza cheese and pork fat (shkvarky) - 45
2) Kremslyky (КРЕМЗЛИКИ В ГЛЕЧИКУ) bread basket bowl Ukrainian Potato Pancakes with mushroom sauce- 134
3) Pork Leg with mustard 7 Piggies style (ГОМІЛОЧКА “СІМ ПОРОСЯТ”) - 95 per 100 grams
4) Varenyky black dumplings (ПЕЛЬМЕНІ “ВІД ВУЙКА КОЦЬО”) - 67
5) Ukrainian cheesecake (ТОРТ “СИРНИК”) - 47
Drink: Ukrainian dry red wine possibly from Odessa

Ukrainian Food Review - 5 traditional dishes to eat in Lviv, Ukraine:
It is lunchtime here in Lviv (Львів) and we tried to find the most traditional Ukrainian restaurant that we could and that is how we ended up at Seven Piggies (Сім поросят) and yeah I can tell you taxidermy is really popular. Lots of stuffed animals.
She brought us something called Banusz and I believe this is some kind of sheep's cheese (brynza) with like looks like bacon so I'm just going to try it on bread. Sam with the fancy waterwheel right behind him. Right behind me. Alright, time to try this. Banosh (Банош).
We also ordered wine. And we got a bread basket. And yeah, usually I found when you order a bread baskets here in Ukraine (Україна) you get both brown and white bread which is cool.
We got a Cabernet it is made from the Ukraine and most of the wine from Ukraine apparently comes from Odessa.
We've ordered something called Kremslyky (КРЕМЗЛИКИ В ГЛЕЧИКУ) and I need to break this baby. I can't actually lift the bread basket off.
So in here we've got some pork. We have potato pancakes (КРЕМЗЛИКИ В ГЛЕЧИКУ) . We have this like creamy sauce with dill and carrots and garlic and it all looks really really good.
I've now had it about 3 or 4 times and it is dish now that whenever we go out and order like traditional Ukrainian food (українська кухня). It is a stample.
They have actually named this dish after the restaurant and it is the 7 pigs and it is a huge pork leg (ГОМІЛОЧКА “СІМ ПОРОСЯТ”). Oh, this meat looks so tender.
Actually it is not a cheese sauce it is a mustard sauce. Oh, it has got a kick to it. Yeah. Totally different than what I thought.
Another side dish we ordered is Varenyky (ПЕЛЬМЕНІ “ВІД ВУЙКА КОЦЬО”) which are the dumplings but these ones are black. Yeah. So we haven't had this before. It looked interesting. Yeah, we've never tried the black dumplings (ПЕЛЬМЕНІ “ВІД ВУЙКА КОЦЬО”). All I know is that they are stuffed with pork and veal.
Thankfully dessert is a smaller portion than everything else because yeah we're stuffed. We're stuffed.
And this is like a Ukrainian cake style of cheesecake (ТОРТ “СИРНИК”). And it has got like a chocolate topping and I think I've been able to see what might potentially be dried pieces of fruit in the middle.
Cheesecake with raisins.
That is so good. Because like this is just like pure cheesecake. There isn't really a bottom layer. It is just pure dense thick cheesecake (ТОРТ “СИРНИК”). Just the way I like it.
This is part of our Travel in Ukraine video series showcasing Ukrainian food (українська кухня), Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian cuisine (українські страви).

Thanks for this video. My wife and I just ate an hour ago at Seven Piggies, and it was a memorable meal. We copied your appetizers, but split the veal with cranberry sauce. Amazing. And I had a sizable cranberry liquor, but the whole dinner was under $21. Thanks again. On by train to Kiev tomorrow.

Banush is a traditional dish from the Western part of Ukraine. It uses NO egg, just cornmeal, sour cream, pork rind or bacon, and brynza - salted sheep’s mill cheese. And the dessert is very traditional of Lviv - Lvivsky syrnyk- which differs from others by adding raisins and chocolate layer on top. I highly suggest that you deeper into Ukrainian culture and try some other dishes in the mountains, try Verkhovyna (Верховина) or Vorokhta (Ворохта) or even Yaremche (Яремче), and visit one of local Kolyba... you won’t regret it and the views are amazing there as well. Good luck!

Guys that is totally cool. The amazing thing about traveling to different countries is being able to eat things you have never tried before. What a meal you both had and remember it is all natural another reason why it is so good. Currently I am living in Romania for 2 and 1/2 years soon to return back to America and I got to tell you when I go into the big grocery stores to get food, they have so many things like America I almost forgot where I am.

If we have a big meal like this we tend to eat really lightly the rest of the day. For instance, back at our apartment we'll usually just prepare a veggie and fruit tray for dinner for example.

Hello guys, I accidentally came across your vlogs and they are really amazing. If you guys are still in Lviv I recommend you guys to try Lvivskaya kopalnaya kava (Lviv miner's coffee) it's really famous there. It's basically flaming coffee and you can also add liquor to it, I recommend adding sweet liquor. Also I noticed you guys really like Ukrainian cuisine so I recommend you to go to Puzata Hata, it's a traditional Ukrainian canteen with all kinds of Ukrainian delicacies. In addition I recommend trying Crimean wine, I find it best in Ukraine. Some of the labels are Villa krim, Massandra, Inkerman. At last I wish you guys good luck and safe travel. :)
@davidnull5590
@davidnull5590 7 лет назад
WINE - Wine from Crimea can't be imported into Ukraine since the Russian takeover of Crimea. The shipment of wine stopped a few years ago. With Puzata Hata, did the food seem to change a little depending on the city? It seems to be a big chain of restaurants.
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 7 лет назад
THank you for the recommendations! We sure enjoyed Lviv and would like to revisit again someday.
@malvikaraj1413
@malvikaraj1413 7 лет назад
Hello David, yes they did stop importing the wine from Crimea after annexation but you can find the old bottles from before 2014 sometimes. And yes with Puzata hata it does change depending on the popularity of the dishes and they sometimes do change their menu on weekly or daily basis, it indeed is a big chain of restaurant. You can find it’s branches throughout Ukraine.

Not exactly. Ukrainian's surely love there pig but on a regular basis they tend to eat chicken more. For example, pig fat (salo) is considered a delicacy in Ukraine.

@@samuelandaudrey 3:07 Subtitles English- "Also really popular wines that you can order at restaurents in Ukraine (Україна)" everything is correct. Subtitles Ukrainian- "Також дуже популярні вина, які ви можете замовити в ресторанах УКРАЇНИ (РОСІЯ)" UKRAINE (RUSSIA) this is not true we are not Russia.It is offensive to us in the conditions of war with Russia.

You cook? Banosh - a species of Transcarpathian and Hungarian dishes tokan. Previously, this territory belonged to Hungary! Ukraine has this territory for less than 100 years. This is a traditional dish of Hungary. Pork under cheese is also a Ukrainian dish?))) A cake that is analogous to cheesecake is a Ukrainian dish??
@sergeontheloose
@sergeontheloose 6 лет назад
So Poland or Hungary? Banosh is a traditional hungarian dish for sure, but you are sort of contradicting yourself with the initial statement. This territory never belonged to Hungary, you might think of the Uzhgorod/Berehove region probably but not Lviv.
@anastasialudwika
@anastasialudwika 6 лет назад
ogomor7, this so called "analogous cheesecake" in fact is really an Ukrainian traditional dish called syrnyk(if it is small) or syrna zapikanka (if it is in form of cake). It is, actually, the most traditional one as far as cheese was always a pivotal ingredient in Ukrainian cuisine. (The base of zapikanka is cheese and flour baked with eggs, and sometimes with dryed fruits).
