On Day 1 Garry Kasparov wowed the spectators with his dynamic and apparently rust-proof play, but on Day 2 he ran promptly ran in to a fearless Wesley So. What followed is a game for the history books!

During the commentary, Yasser said that Wesley "literally didn't give Garry a chance to breathe." Wesley actually got up from his chair and put Garry in a rear naked choke.

+steve martin You talk some shit about maybe the best player of all time,but you forget that even So beat him now,he is nobody compare to Kasprarov,Garry would beat him in his prime with eyes wide shut,so a little respect for legend of legends please....
@righteousman04
@righteousman04 8 лет назад
+Misica11000 There's no such thing as 'Prime' in chess. It's not boxing. Gary beat these guys in other games of the same tournament. But this particular game with So is one best game! Only thing is-- Kasparov lost.
@Misica11000

+ANOBANAMAN YAN Yes there is,look at chess grandmasters in late ages,Karpov,Fischer,Spasky and many many others,just a shadow of there prime,on the other side kasparov show them in this tournament what real legend is.....nakamura,kariaka,So,they will be juts an ordinary chess players in his age....

Damn that was badass. Being able to see that in blitz boggles my mind.

And that too against a player like Kasparov. Even the thought of playing against the former world champion must be scary for most GMs.

A "fair distribution" lately: Karjarkin winning the candidates, Magnum Carlsen winning in Norway, Caruana winning the US Championship, Nakamura winning the Blitz, and Hou Yifan back on the throne amongst the ladies! And with players like Wesley So, Giri, Li Chao, Eljanov, Kramnik, Topalov, Adams, Ivanchuk, Svidler, Wei Yi ... plus a dozen more up there, none of the above can relax for a moment! And with your channel, John, I feel like a spoiled child! Thanx! ;O)

Wesley So's immortal blitz game is one will NEVER forget. He has the courage & natural genius to defeat Kasparov or any other chess great alive. Bravo! I study this one just to feel happy during a given day. Our champion: GM Wesley So, the great!

The game between Caruana and Kasparov in the last round could be shown in a your video, it looks like one of the classic attacking games of Kasparov.

The crazy thing is, if Garry didn't blunder two games in a dominating position on the first day he might have actually won the tournament. Granted it's blitz and these things happen, but this was one of the best chess events I've watched in a long time. If they can fix the commentating and make the presentation a little more easy to follow,I could see this type of event becoming very big for chess.

+Dave Conway I'm with you on that. Wish they had a better view of the board and didn't mess about showing variations on the only board that had a top-down view.

Blunders happen in blitz/rapid,I don't think it makes sense to say if Kasparov hadn't of blundered In the 2 games he might have won the tournament?? Blunders play a big part in rapid/blitz chess. You could say the same for So,or caruana they both made bad blunders, You could say they might have also won the tournament then?! Kasparov played well and showed he is still very competitive and can definitely play some good chess. But I don't agree he might have won the tournament if he didn't blunder as every single player blundered it happens and I said it happens alot more in rapid chess. I would have love to see a future event with Magnus in it.

+Joe Ormrod Very much my impression. I didn't realize how defensive people would be for Kasparov. I'm always in favor of taking people down who are on top. I'm American, but I always root against the American basketball teams. Not because I dislike them, but because the upset is more appealing.
@daveyconway

+Joe Ormrod did you read my comment?
@wakinguptothetruth.2566
@wakinguptothetruth.2566 8 лет назад
+Dave Conway Yes I did you said the crazy thing is if Gary hadn't of blundered in them 2 games he might of actually won the event, I disagreed with your comment and said you could say that about any player ie if they hasn't of blundered that they could have won also, yes I know you stated underneath by saying granted these things happen in blitz chess, but your first statement didn't make any sense atall, because blunders in chess especially blitz play a major part in chess, so you can't say if Kaaparov hadn't of blundered he might of actually won the event, that's a ridiculous comment, people lose in all sports because of mistakes, that's just how it is.

John, I dont think the h6 move was done out of desperation by Garry. White was threatening among other things Ng5 with the knight jumping to e6 or the queen coming to f7.

What are your thoughts on the fact no one "flagged" through 18 games? The players attitude towards the tournament, an aspect of the time control, the level of the players, or other???
@shreddaily101
@shreddaily101 8 лет назад
*36 games

actually, Hikaru's first game with Caruana is a great example of flagging.

+VAran22 caruana resigned with less time in a losing position. Time may have got him, but no flag.
@bailinnumberguy

White's light squared bishop should be in the hall of fame of monster pieces. In the resigned position, queen takes bishop is forced. White then grabs the rook on C8 check. King goes to F7; the monster bishop delivers the deadly check from b3 which finishes the game very quickly after queen takes C6 check.

Nice analysis! Thanks! Well worth sharing. And what a story, what a great event, what a great group of players. No one can doubt Wesley So belongs on the team. Guys - with these players our US Olympic team is the highest rated in the world! The US has not won gold since 1976 (when Soviet countries did not even take part!) We have a real shot at gold with no excuses. And icing on the cake = Kasparov donated his prize money to our team. WOW.

Guys one question- (I'd appreciate if Sir Bartholomew could help with this)-- At 3:53 in the video , why didn't kasparov play Nc6 ? (In future that knight could have jumped to d4 creating a good blockade on d file).
@towtruckn

John I picked up on the quiet move B-a4 straight away but thought; no that couldn't be right its to simple haha so spent about 10 minutes trying to figure something out but all roads seemed to lead nowhere; so it just goes to show especially in Blitz sometimes first instinct is correct. The one consolation is I got the move RxB pretty quickly and as you point out the pin has far more worth than the exchange. I've only recently taken a look at Wesley's games and his recent play on lichess is amazing and think with the top 10 you could throw a wet blanket over all of them they are just that good. Anyway hope all goes well with the GM norms it seems like a really tough thing to do. Peter

At video time 9.15: Instead of playing the seemingly ingenious move Ba4, why couldn't White simply take on c6 with check? A possible continuation being: Nxc6 Qe6+ Nc-e7 Bc5 with what seems to me massive pressure on Black's King. Could anyone please refute that idea for me. Otherwise I will not understand what was so clever about Ba4.

@simonenoli4418

white gets a tempo with Ncd2. bishop backs up and Rc1 pinning the pawn (if pawn takes then Bb5 wins the bishop black can hold onto it with either Ne7 but Qa4 is crushing) and from there white has more than enough compensation for the pawn
