We’re going through which business’ you should buy and which you should avoid, in GTA 5 Story Mode.
There are 15 business’ you can buy in GTA 5 Story Mode. And they can be broken down into 2 distinct types; passive, where the business will earn you money regardless of what you’re doing in game; and active, where you actually have to complete missions to run it.
There’s also this weird thing going on with the car scrap yard, where is active, but your weekly earnings are capped; but we’ll get into that a bit later.

Grand Theft Auto is a truly massive game. Between GTA 5 and the constant updates from Rockstar for GTA Online; there’s no shortage of new content and interesting things to do.
Let’s start with the Hen House at $80,000. Given it’s location, it has limited earning potential and only brings in $920 per week; that means it’s going to take roughly 487 hours of gameplay to recover your investment.
Next is the LSPD Auto Impound lot at $150,000. This is an active business where you get $500 per pick up. To break even, you need to do 300 tow truck missions; which translates to roughly 20 hours - so probably not a great investment.
The McKenzie Field Hangar is actually the first business you can buy in GTA Story Mode, and it comes in at around $150,000. This is another active one, and it has some interesting mission and is great flight and driving practice - plus it only takes about 4 hours of gameplay to break even. So you, I think this is a solid investment.
On to the Downtown Cab Company at $200,000. This happily does it’s own thing; but only brings in $2,000 per week, which translates to 550 hours of gameplay before you get your money back.
Heading to Vespucci Beach, it’s Smoke on the Water, next; at $204,000. With weekly earnings of $9,300 it will take a little over 120 hours to get your money back.
OK, the Car Scrap Yard at $275,000. The premise of this sounds great; $150 per car destroyed under any circumstance, in the Greater Los Santos area. Nice right? Until you realise the earnings are capped at $5,000 per week. That means, even if you rampage all the time, destroy hundreds of cars, and do the whole thing using free ammo drops; it will still take north of 300 hours to recover your money..
Next is the Blaine County Los Santos Customs. This one’s a bit of a hidden gem, at $349,000. It only brings in $1,600 per week; which equates to over 1,200 hours of gameplay - so you’re never getting your money back… But, Franklin gets free car customisations if he owns it - so it will absolutely pay for itself in savings, if you’re a bit of a car nut.
The Biker Bar, Hookies comes in at $600,000 and nets you $4,700 per week. At 716 hours to get your money back, it’s probably a waste.
Pitchers is next on the list at $750,000. It picks up $7,100 per week without you having to do much, but that still works out to a little over 590 hours of gameplay. That’s a lot - so I wouldn’t worry about getting this one.
Tequi-la-la is $2,000,000. It sounds like a solid investment with a weekly income of $16,500; but that still means nearly 680 hours of gameplay to recover your funds.
Next up we have the cinemas; starting with the Doppler at $10,000,000. It’s a solid earner at $132,000 per week; but that equates to around 480 hours to recover your cash, making it not worthwhile.
The Ten Cent Theater at $20,000,000 is probably going to give you better ROI at $264,000 per week; but that only works out marginally better, with it taking about 430 hours to recover your money.
…and the Tivoli is utterly rubbish, at a cost of $30,000,000 but a weekly income of only $142,000 - it will take you 1,180 hours of gameplay to see any kind of return on this.
Finally, the Los Santos Golf Club at a whopping $150,000,000. This squeaks out the Ten Cent Theater for earnings, at $264,500 per week. Sounds good, right? Best earner in the game. Well, that’s 3,175 hours of gameplay.
