One more thing I would add... Always pack the back of your seals with transmission assy lube or vaseline to make sure the springs don't pop out during assembly.

18:45 - It being a high pinion means the drive side is the drive side and coast is coast. A low pinion is backwards as you stated which is why a low pinion is less desirable, it drives on the coast (weak) side of the ring gear.

IDK if I am a gearing god or just super lucky, but the first two times I did it I was spot on and didnt have to make any adjustments. The third time I only had to make a small change once. I am not going to make a habit of installing gears a lot because I like to keep my record clean as it is.

Youve done a great job both physically and educationally. Just a few things with all due respect. I see you having trouble getting your ring gear assembly in the housing. Companies like Mophorn makes a housing spreader to be used in the big blind shallow holes to either side of your housing opening. Just Google jeep differential spreader and or look on amazon. Also unless I saw it wrong (if I did, apologies), when you push your bearings on dont push on the opposite race from the interference fit. If you are installing on a shaft, push on the inner race. Installing in a housing bore, push on the outer race. Not adhearing to this could brendel the bearing race and shorten the life of the bearing significantly. Take an old inner race and dremel out the center till it's a slip fit or more on the shaft and use it as a pusher die. Same for outer race applications. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work and awesome editorials.

Dana bearing caps are marked at the factory for orientation. if you look at the cap there will be a letter stamped in it and the other cap will have the same letter but turned sideways, the seal surface of the housing will have the same letters that you align the caps with

I pulled my Dana 30 high pinion and put new gears bearings axles hubs balljoints. Did the same with my Chrysler 8.25 on my 96 Cherokee. Should be good for another 200000 miles. Great video wish you had this video out a year ago. The previous owner removed the ring gear on the d30. What a shock that was when I removed the axle cover to see why my front axle wasn't working. Still cant figure out how they tore up the ring and pinion.

New subscriber to your channel. You should invest in a case spreader! Like you said... you can’t set preload too high on the carrier bearings and to this I agree. But some additional preload you can obtain by spreading the case .010 - .015 will help reduce ring gear deflection under stress. We all know deflection is a major enemy of the ring and pinion! Look forward to browsing them through all your vids!

Muddy Beards 4X4 Look on eBay. You can pick one up with free shipping for under $70! I build a lot of axles for drag cars and 4x4s. I have 2 sets of tons for Jeeps in my shop right now and just finished another set. It’s a worthwhile tool to have! Also if you don’t know. Spicer has a book that lists all the stock pinion shim sizes used in different housings like the 30,44,60, etc... it’s not always spot on but a really good starting point when starting with an empty housing. I find I’m usually .005 / .010 away from perfect.

@patsaunders6035

Like the build but quick tip of advice and please dont be mad at me for it but the next time you press a bearing on anything. Take an old bearing and cut the cage of then cut a line threw the inner race and press bearing on with inner race. If not you put pressure on inner and outer race and needle bearings so when you install everything it's not smooth as it could be and may feel like you have trash and will premature wear on bearings. Other reason for cutting the line on the old inner race it cause you can just tap it off anything its pressed on to and you dont need to struggle to pull it off. When teaching gears to people I fell thia is one of the best tips!

@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 5 лет назад
Thank you. A case spreader is definitely something I wish I had, would make life a lot easier and less frustrating when adding preload on the carrier. The cost was pretty high last time I had looked into buying on years ago. They are much more reasonable now, so I might have to get one. Thanks for watching👊🏻

Put your ring gear in the oven at about 170 degrees for a little bit. Will slide right over the locker and into place. You never want to use the ring gear bolts to "pull" the ring gear into place.

Hi MB, using your video for my build of dana 30 narrow. Love your guys stuff. My question is on the zip locker ring gear sleeves for 7/16 size to 3/8 reduction. I pulled the numbers from the bag in video. Got the sleeve today. Yes 1 sleeve not 10. The cost was $13 . Did you have issue with this. Did you have $130 cost for 10 sleeves? Seems crazy. Thanks again for your content.

Thanks, I believe most Cherokee’s older than 2000 had a high pinion. I would look for a whole Cherokee Dana 30 with the gears that you want and just swap it for the one you have. It will bolt right into the wrangler. Than change the gears in the 35 to match. That would be the easiest and probably cheapest way to upgrade.

I did do the wj swap for bigger brakes, and I put together a Ruffstuff.com steering link kit.... other than that, stock axles, no truss. No sleeve kit, no knuckle gussets, no bad ass extras...... Any recommendations for something to read or watch for someone that doesn't know enough about carriers, lockers, preload, backlash. ect? I have watched some videos and get a bit here and there but still have a lot to learn. Also I didn't see a crush sleeve like I have seen before. Do you ever use them? Looks like you would go through a lot of them with how many times you pulled this thing apart.
@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 5 лет назад
Thanks for checking it out👊🏻 setting up gears can be daunting, I recommend getting Yukon gears installation guide and just read it a ton of times. Just google Yukon gear installation guide, it’s the first thing that shows up. I usually use a crush sleeve eliminator whenever possible. If you were to use a crush sleeve it would be one of the last things to install once you have your pinion depth. I have another video setting up Nate’s 9” axle from 6 months ago. And I am currently editing a Dana 44 axle setup. So check those out and read the manual. Good luck👍🏻

By the way sorry not advocating for any channel just thought you should know what I looked at. I have also been talking to Yukon tech person about the hat sizing on the turned down Cj rotors. Your pinion should come with a shim reference mark on it.. it will either read.. .26# or +\- 1 etc.. The +\- reference is per the factory spec.. so increase or decrease that much thou.. Factory spec is .260 so if as typical your pinion is marked .262 you add 2 thou shim from factory spec. This is much more difficult as you don’t have the original pinion which should also be marked and could be used as reference to double check however factory pretty much always the pinion will be spec to .260 and the factory makes all the adjustments to the carrier.. This will save your a ton of time

You mentioned a locked d30 you had on 36s. Was it a built axle with truss and armor or stock?
@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 5 лет назад
It was a hp30 with chromoly axles, 4.88 gears, Detroit trutrac and ranger style locking hubs. It did not have a truss or any armor besides an aftermarket diff cover. It was definitely at its limits and I babied it for sure until I got the Dana 44. And then I got 40’s. So kinda back to babying it, lol.
@MrGalaxieman
@MrGalaxieman 5 лет назад
@@MuddyBeards4X4 that's kind of the route I am taking. I was leaning towards jcrs truss since it looks simple to install, and also c gussets and sleeves but idk if I need all that. I will be running 35s and eventually 4.88 gears. Do you think the truetrac was easier on the axles than a full on locker? I dont think I'd need anything more than lsd but I've been considering lunchbox locker for the front as well since I could install it now
@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 5 лет назад
I would just do the truss and the c gussets. 4.88 gears and 35’s will be perfect. Locker really depends on your budget. Robbie has the Aussie locker in his Dana 30 with 36” and he likes it so far. The trutrac is an amazing lsd. it was my favorite by far for drivability and offroad, but 35” tires is pushing the limit of that locker, I believe Detroit say 33” max. The way the trutrac operates is way easier on axle shafts than a lunchbox. Really depends on tire size and budget. A lot to think about, that’s why I have changed mine like 4 times, lol.
