Ingredients
• 2 cups beef tallow or lard
• 1 cup nut butter (any kind) I used Crazy Richard’s- no palm oil, plant based, gluten free, no salt, and no sugar. I found it at Ingles
• 4 cups wild bird seed
• 1 cup quick oats
• 3/4 cup corn meal
• baking dish, jars, or molds for shaping the suet
Steps:
1. Mix the dry ingredients of bird seed, oats, and corn meal together and set aside.
2. Combine the shortening and nut butter in a separate bowl and melt. Stir until completely combined.
3. Pour the melted mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until combined.
4. Spoon mixture into the molds. If using a baking dish, put the mixture in the freeze only long enough to make it solid then cut into the desired sizes and wrap with plastic wrap.
5. Freeze for one to two hours and place in your suet feeder!
Note: Not recommended for outdoor temperatures above 50 degrees.

Hi Larry 👋. New UK 🇬🇧 subscriber here. I’ve really enjoyed the couple of very informative and helpful videos of yours that I’ve watched so far , and look forward to catching up the rest. I love following people who , like myself, are compassionate about animals and go out of their way look after them ( especially during winter when they need our help to get through the worst of it) . You are a very kind man 😊.

I love this! So often people won't show the details of what happens when things go wrong and make it so easy. But this is great. Sorry you went through all this, but we all learned lessons, so it's wonderful. Good idea to use the saran wrap in the tins. Love the Birds! Thank you!

Glad you kept the Video Real; nice to see someone else fighting something that should be too easy. I use cookie sheets rather than a Baking Dish, has about the right depth for the Suet Feeders. I've had Train Wrecks too! I would have added twine to the center of the Muffin Mold Feeders Love that Wooden Spoon BTW!

Thanks for the video Mr. Satchwell. I have a lot of birds eating suet and peanuts in my feeders. I really enjoy watching them. Now I'm making another for seeds and sunflowers. I hope they like it. Greetings from Spain and happy birding!!!

I use a 9x13 pan lined with aluminum foil. When the suet is chilled, simply lift the foil out of the pan. Then use a pizza cutter to cut the suet into 6 cakes (the pizza cutter makes much cleaner cuts than a knife). Then I put the cakes into ziploc sandwich bags and freeze (or keep chilled) until ready to use. 😉👍

Thank you for sharing. That’s a great tip. I’ll be sure to pass that on the next time I make suet. My 4 year old granddaughter is coming from Texas for Christmas and asked if we could make suet while she is here.

I think if you had just run hot tap water across the bottom of those muffin tins, they would have popped right out. I bought some cheap bird suet in a cardboard box at Menard's a while back. They looked to have a lot of suet across the bottom of the cakes, so I just melted them down in a pan and added more ingredients to make them more nutritional. Then I came in here and watched some videos of DIY suet cakes. I will make the next ones from scratch once the box is used up. Not sure if the squirrels will leave any for the birds. I know some people add hot pepper chips to the mix to keep the squirrels away, but that sounds cruel. lol I also have a hole making bit for my drill, so plan to put holes in some of the downed branches for my woodpeckers and push the suet mixture into them. May as well use them for something besides yard waste.

You can still get the suet cakes for $.69 or $.79 cents at Rural King. A few of their suet cakes are $.69 but most run $.79. Actually about all of their bird seeds run cheaper than other big box stores here in Virginia. Loving your recipe. I may have to give it a try here pretty soon.

I love rural king. Most cakes here in West Virginia run $0.79, but I usually make my own suet similar to this. Love seeing new recipes! I do buy all my bird feed at rural king because it is a lot cheaper there. I hit the jackpot the other day. They had a lot of their brand bird feed half off because they are changing the bag designs for 2022.

Hi Larry, I’ve recently started making my own bird suet , which has gone over very well with all our bird friends through the winter (Canada - BC Fraser Valley). This past week has been unseasonably warm for March, so my DIY suet has been melting in my feeders. ( birds still eat it, & our dogs are loving it as well 😂 under the feeders). I noticed the issues you were having getting your suet cakes out of the muffin pan and the flat pan. I experienced that same issue,so I purchased a bunch of small size containers with snap on lids, through Walmart. ( Rubbermaid I believe) . Problem solved 👍, I fill the containers and stack them in the freezer nice and neat. Your wonderful video has taught me how to make No Melt suet and I love your mason jar style suet feeding station. Did you make it yourself ? If so, could you please share how to make it ? I’d like to make one for our bird friends too. Thanks very much, Barb 🧑‍🌾😊

If you use a silicone cupcake sheet.. you can get the suet hard then the suet will just pop out of the silcone cupcake sheet...

I use my iPhone 11. I sometimes use the 4k feature but it really eats up memory and I have a hard time uploading or saving it. I’d love to have a “real” camera but I just can’t justify the expense. Thanks for watching and asking.

In your experience will lard do better in warmer temperatures?
@LSatch

Yes, I think lard works a little better in warmer weather. My birds don’t much like the no melt suet. They’ll eat it only if it’s the only choice. Thanks for watching

I saved the plastic containers that the store-bought suet came in, but that's too much work and way too much expense for me. I've been looking at leaf lard, but it's way too expensive.

My granddaughter works at a farm that sells their hog products. She said people come in for leaf lard all the time, for human consumption.
