This 3D printable wire spool hanger has a special trick: each spool can easily be removed when you need to take it with you.
Instructions and STLs to 3D Print your own:
www.prusaprinters.org/prints/...
Background:
I was searching for a way to hang my electrical wire spools at my electronics workbench. Unfortunately the most common solution was to hang them all off a single dowel.
This is fine if you never need to bring your wire to your projects, but I'm always grabbing a spool or two to work on something. Having to remove all my wire spools to get to the right one wouldn't work.
I came up with a simple solution to fix this. A 3d printed wire spool hanger that lets you remove each spool individually. Use it like any other wire dispenser at your bench OR easily grab a spool and take it with you to projects that don't easily fit on the bench (I've got a few!)
Parts you will need:
- 3D print as many hooks as you have wire spools plus one.
- 1.25" and 1.5" pan head wood screws for each hook.
- 1/2" dowel (cut to match spool size + 0.5")
Mount above your electronics workbench or wherever you need your wires most!

That's pretty cool if you have a 3-D printer.. I just took a 2 by 4 and screwed it to the wall vertically and drilled half inch holes spaced apart needed and tapped dowels in at 45゚ then I just slide the spool on.. top of the dowel so I don't have to keep track of the dowel.. Another way would be to use Velcro on one side of the spool. But your idea is very creative

Thanks! What you describe is actually how I hang my saw blades. :)

That is definitely prior art that I considered.

Ha ha ha! Good one! Now I'll just go get a set of toilet paper holders from IKEA. The ceiling mounted ones.

Very nice solution. My wire spools are just in a huge pile in a drawer.

Awesome! 3D printers are such game-changers for making stuff like this. And I totally need a fancy electronic ruler like that. You should put an affiliate link somewhere! 😛

Thanks so much. My Prusa was some of the best maker money I've ever spent. Highly recommend one. The fancy electronic ruler is a caliper and they are very useful and cheap. These ones look similar to mine (aff link): amzn.to/3yODa3R

Ruler is digital calipers. Good link by Matt on Amazon. Be sure to get the steel ones not plastic. There are some for $20 on Amazon in steel.

Why not model the screw countersinks into CAD model? SolidWorks Hole Wizard is your friend.

I might update the Thingiverse files to include a countersink version, I mean why not. I just figured this would be more versatile (could fit more screw types) and well let's face it laziness is a factor ;) I do think that using pan head screws is probably better in terms of how the screw and plastic interact (you have the screw pushing straight down on the plastic instead of pushing it apart like in the countersinks), so ideally use a pan head screw. If you have trouble finding them, the Kreg pockethole screws are great for this. Of course I just used what I had and nothing blew up so...

This looks like such a pita to build and support going forward and you have a bunch of small pieces of wood every time you want to take some spools. Why not just catch the spool between dowels, let it roll on its spool. Lift in and out from the shelf as required. Two brackets and expandable without requiring any more plastic*. *depending on how much weight your dowel shelf can hold.

It would be nice to get rid of the dowels I'm with you there. But they aren't so bad because you just take the spool off, then put the dowel back in the empty spot. You don't just toss dowels everywhere. The roll on two dowels can work too, it's just tradeoffs. Your idea is actually better for portability, but when you're just using them on the rack then they don't spin as well on the dowels because they tend to want to roll out of the holder. I have some ideas for an improved design that doesn't require the dowel but to be honest this actually works well enough that it's pretty low on the priority list.

NICE BUT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE A 3D PRINTER. LIKE I DON'T !!!!!!

Nice solution, but I'd need to cut new dowels every day as I lose them 😕

You put the dowel back right away when you take a spool off. Never ever put it anywhere else or yea, it will just become part of the workbench clutter and never be found again!

Or stand them upright and you can pull wire sideways and if you need the spool you can just pick it up and not have to put back a dowel 🤷🏻‍♂️
