I planted buckwheat in a plot of 3 years straight. This area was infested with several weeds. Then we had a bad drought last spring & I didn't plant it. But I benefited from the previous years by not having weeds last year. Had an awesome crop of brassica, rape & turnips last fall after having rain to germinate 1/3 of the way through August. This spring I have wheat planted in there with very few weeds with no spraying. Many benefits to buckwheat as long as u r patient & plant it thick enough.

Hey Dave - Have you ever just broadcast that brassica and/or clover directly into the standing buckwheat and then cultipack it down while terminating it with glyphosate?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
No and I honestly never will. The overuse of Chemicals in the food plot world is insane and not needed with annuals. If I ever was to do it like that I would crimp it to avoid chemicals

First time using it Minds about 2 weeks old a foot to 15 in been really no rain at that plot so I think it's doing pretty good yes sir disc don't poison

Thank you Dave for limiting chemical use!!! what fert. did you use on that buckwheat? Mine doesn't look the best maybe try barley next year?

@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
Your welcome. Sometimes it’s needed but other times it’s not. Instead of people using chemicals and killing something I always say, why don’t you try growing something lol. The food plot world is so confused. If they focused on cover crops and don’t buy stock in chemicals they would have much better results. I used triple 19 on this is what the sample called for

Would it be possible to broadcast your fall mix on top of the standing buckwheat and then come in and top clip the buckwheat or even crimp the buckwheat and come in and no till drill your fall blend? Thinking of ways to avoid re discing the field and limiting use of chemicals not sure if possible
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
Yes you can do that. If you crimp it you don’t need chemicals.

Any recommendations for central TX (fairly dry, hot, calich type soil)?

Beans, peas, buckwheat all would be good.

Holy crap, that Buckwheat is huge! My definitely is a smaller variety. Where do you get those seeds from, it looks great!
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
Buck wheat is buck wheat it’s all the same. Just depends on soil fertility, moisture and seed rate. Thanks

Great videos! Do you soil test and amend for the buckwheat or for the crop you actually want to plant in the fall?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Год назад
Thanks. Yes I do. I soil test twice a year when I’m planting annuals such as planting a spring/summer crop and then for fall plot. If it’s a perennial plot then I’ll soil sample once a year

Dang it here's an update just went down to the plot I don't think my buckwheat is 3 weeks old and it's already flowering I don't know if they has to deal with the length of daylight.. At this time of the year but I don't think it's going to get too much Heights before I have to plow it under

@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
Mine had flowers at 3 weeks as well. You will be good takes a while for the flower to mature before seed. Shouldn’t get seeds until about 7 weeks

Wow that buckwheat looks awesome, mine is a little more than a foot with some thin spots. What was your seed rate per acre?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
Thank you. I did about 75 pounds per acre.
@belindahorn3611
@belindahorn3611 3 года назад

Have you ever tried to disc buckwheat when it is 3 to 4 ft tall
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors

I have sometimes it works. Sometimes when it’s that tall I’ll mow it then disc

I have two hidey hole plots pretty much side by side. Can I plant Smack Down in one and Big Sexy in the other but top dress both with Hot Chic? And if so would you wait to top dress and do it all in the same day?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
Yes you can definitely do that I would plant together but spread separately. Spread your smack down then spread your hot chic. Reason being they are different size seeds. But they can definitely be mixed together.

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors sorry thats what I meant by planting at the same time. I definitely try and watch all of your stuff. I bought Farmerstouch NPK and Antlergrow because of your videos. And I tried my own experiments with natural browse. Sprayed one side of a path and not the other. The difference in browse is amazing. Stuff works. Keep up the good work.

Why would you want to disc it up and promote weed growth?Its beautiful.But myself am going to seed my brassicas into my buckwheat with fertilizer,spray it with weed killer and roll it down.Just my opinion.Don’t like the price of fuel..
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
Yeah it’s beautiful for sure. There won’t be any weed growth! I’ve done this for 15 years. My fall Plots have zero weeds with out chemicals. Pay for fuel, pay for chemicals all the same. Pros and cons to everything. 👍
