Excellent video. I'm a fabricator at an aerospace factory, and my tool storage, hardware and material are pretty well organized. Mostly because I've been there for a while and when something isn't right, it gets corrected or refined. However, when it comes to my personal workspace, it's a different story. Unfortunately a carport fire which spread to my garage resulted in a huge loss of useful and treasured tools and lots of other things. Admittedly, it was pretty messy and chaotic, but I could usually find things, eventually. After we rebuild, I am going to do things more efficiently. At my job ALL my work tables are on wheels. I also use a cart frequently, but yours is a great idea that I intend to explore for my garage. I am also going to use your idea of isolating and insulating the air compressor. Thanks for the tour

Nice work space Jeff, I definitely agree on the 3mtr wall height thing. So easy to achieve at the construct phase for relatively small extra cost. Makes it so much more usable even if you have to keep the floor space a bit more compact.

I just purchased a flamables cabinet, the reduction on my insurance means It will pay for it's self in 2.5 years and also makes my workshop safer. Paint is fuel, welding and grinding sparks are ignition source. This is how my non mechanical insurance broker put it. Good advise I thought, we often miss the obvious.

My only comment is to keep the things that make sparks, like grinders and welders away from the nicely painted things- or glass, I had damaged side windows in a car I did by not paying attention to where the sparks went. Also helps to have no flamables in that area.

Jeff - As a firefighter I am surprised you did not state that the number one set of tools in a workshop is to have adequate fire extinguishers of proper size and capacity situated around the shop. I did an inventory of my own shop and was stunned at how much flammable chemicals I had in the shop (paints, oils, fuel, etc.). Otherwise, great video and I agree most heartily with the comment that you cannot have a big enough shop. A friend of mine says his perfect retirement home is a 1,200 SF house and a 6,000 SF shop 😀.

I really need a cart and stool. I've been too busy and cheap to buy anything. I got rid of everything when I moved 13 months ago and I haven't replaced it yet. The fastest head gasket change I EVER did I made sure that EVERY time I changed tools, I put back the one I wasn't using. I had my socket tray and spanner tray and all the other stuff set out on a cart and because I didn't spend 5 minutes looking for a tool every 2 minutes I was done in 2 hours.

Great video Jeff, Only garage tool I didn't see and I use everyday is a shop vac. I have a Shop Vac that has a detachable leaf blower and I use it everyday. Matter of fact, it's the second one I own because the first one blew up and getting ready to buy another one since my current one is getting messed up. We have a couples of motorcycles and it's great to dry the bikes or the cars engine bays after a good wash. These days I'm doing bodywork so I attach it to my orbital sander, My 2 door garage is attached to the house so keeping the dust out is a must. Every week or so, I open the doors (2 car garage) and use the leaf blower and blow all the surfaces, tool box and floor. Also everything is on wheels, and all cupboards benches etc are about 2 inches off the floor that way, I spray water to get rid of any dust, road salt on the floor (yeah it snows a lot here and the daily lives in the garage during winter) I got that tip from Jack Olsen in his series of postings about his home shop. Like most of us, the garage is what I call organic, it evolves constantly. One thing you should mention to guys who are thinking about building a paint booth is to make sure you use brush less fan motors to eliminate any sparks when evacuating paint booth paint fume exhaust. Oh and your right about any garage must have Pinky's series on a loop... And at least a decent radio to blast some AC-DC once in a while huh? And last but not the least, a beer fridge!

You are right about shed size. They are never big enough. Fleck floors ?? Drop a small part and it dissapears. Ask me I know. Height ? yep get it as high as you can. I have a four post hoist. After I rebuilt the castors I can move that hoist around with a car on it. I'm actually scared of two post hoists. I have put shelves along all three walls that go to the roof. Four office stationary cabinets that are now on retractable wheels. And I'm in the process of building another little shed to put the rubbish in..like the mower and garden tools that just give a home for spiders. I also have a pair of small tables on wheels. Same height as the work benches. They are very usefull for holding all the tools that I'm using at the moment. Much like you. I'm always looking for a better way.😉

Also when I work on the cars I leave the used tools on the cart and then after the job or the day I done I spend like 5-10min to clean them and put them back where they live. Helps you to easy find them next time around and not covered in oil/dust whatever

Nah I did epoxy flooring with a flake, light grey flake on light grey floor, it is phenomenal, no difficulties spotting small objects, and the flake and the clearcoat on it soften the floor a tiny bit, enough that when you drop something hard on the ground, it doesn't take the epoxy off the concrete.

Great vid Jeff and a great shed! Def plenty of things I will be taking away. A small one you glossed over is the white board - dead handy. One tip I would add is to think about door (entry) size. I wanted one wider door and one smaller but the need to be more economic at the time meant I got two 3m doors - not bad, but I still wish I had a 5m door instead for much easier access. Where do you store parts when your builds are in progress? This seems to be one of the most difficult aspects for me - currently the shed is full up of the parts stripped from project and they take up so much space, whether the smaller parts that are boxed and on shelves or particularly larger items like panels (bumpers, bonnets etc), interior trim like door cards.. engine... gearbox... all need a space to rest until they go back on the car. Our shared council made a fuss about height, so a +3m roofline was out for me. Annoying as that really ruled out a 2-post.
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 4 месяца назад
Storage is my issue as well. Door size I forgot about but it is why I paid extra for a big single rather than 2 smaller.

@@HomeBuiltByJeff i hear you.. so in the spare room, on the dining table, at work, in your mates garage, on your mates dining table... The frame was the issue for my door setup, 3 equal bays were much cheaper to build - so they told me. Live and learn.

There are others who went with the "flakes" and say DO NOT DO THAT .. IF you are prone to having to chase down washers and nuts and other things that might fall off of a car while working on it... or not wanting to KNOW that you need to clean the floors. If you did chips, you might want to make them mono-tone / one color. Just advice on that from another channel dealing w/ epoxy floors.

Interesting for me to see that I have by accident, and with much less "gear" got the same kind of solutions/set up. A few things and in no particular order: Fire extinguisher/s !! Of the right type, size, operational, and always always accessible, not under the work bench ...some where? If you are building a building from from scratch.... Sound insulation...maybe your Mr,s Jeff doesn't want to hear your hammering, grinding, tunes, or singing?...maybe your neighbours too. Heat insulation/ventilation....not every one lives in the land of Ozz...trying to work in a cold space is very unpleasant or being too hot is not good. Security....if you have nice things, there is some other low life who wants them for free. Also knowing what you have and it's value is useful if you find yourself having to make an insurance claim for missing gear....from experience...I am still remembering things that I had, didn't use often, and no longer have....compression tester "didn't I have one of those?"...impact tool (hammering type), and where is my heat gun? Work clothes/gear.. It's always dirty work (if you are not a RU-vidr), so have a change of clothes that you keep in your workshop, and put on take off, inside the workshop. First of all, it put you in the right frame of mind when you are going to work, also saves you taking all the workshop dirt/grime/dust in to the house. Water supply/sink, you are going to get dirty, having just a sink in the workshop again saves taking that dirt in to the house. First aid kit...eye wash....plasters...antiseptic cream A space to sit and have a drink...a think...and to admire your progress....you also need a clock...that 5 min job just took 2 hours and your Mrs Jeff is waiting to go to the store with you...serve your dinner??...you lost track of time and forgot to eat...drink.....pick the kids up from school??? Rags...towels...spill kit.....you are going to have dirty stuff...parts, tools, hands..and maybe spill stuff along the way...or your car might decide to vomit all over the workshop with out warning. Have an exit...don't box your self in to a space where you can not get out if some thing goes wrong.......welding under the car...extinguisher outer side of the shop...engine hoist/work trolley in front of the workshop door??? Have a plan...what you are going to do...how you are going to do it...where you are going to do it...what you need to do it...what you are going to do (with it) when you have done it. Maybe not good RU-vid content, or simply goes without saying?

I know that chippies wear tool belts, but I've found this extremely helpful when working under my car and I don't have a spare hand to turn around to put a tool down, knowing I'm going to need it shortly without looking. I've put small hooks or loops on those tools I use the most so it's easier to just drop them down and they are hanging on the belt. Does anyone else do this? Or am I just weird...

Interesting tip, but I can see the benefit.

I can't help but notice you have a fair bit of space in the rafters, and no fab table. With the amount of exhaust and other TIG work you do, a small fixture table on wheels would be super handy and could almost replace your swivel vice. Obviously it would take up a lot of room, but a chain fall in the roof and it could be stored up there when not in use!

A fixture table is on the list.... but there are a bunch of things on the list ;)

@@HomeBuiltByJeff I have a real problem with escalation. Like, I really want a mill. But I don't have time to use a mill. BUT! If I get a 4 axis CNC mill not only will it cut down my milling time, I can use it to do paying work and it'll pay for itself!

Nah, flakes on the floor is not the way to go. Try dropping a small but very important screw on a flake finish. It will take you hours to find it. Of cours you could buy a magnetic knife wall bracket and wand that over the floor but the first few times you wouldn't have one.

Why not fix a light batten to the lift arms ?

Wish I could afford property where I live just outside Vancouver BC to have a work shop but the average home price is over a Million dollars. Only the wealthy can purchase a home here. Especially if you are single/one income. Even renting a place to live is expensive.

@@smavtmb2196 It is tough for the younger generation to get into the property market a lot of places these days, but I started by buying something in a less great area further out to get my foot in the door. The first place is the hardest.

@@HomeBuiltByJeff Yes I definitely should have bought something years ago. Unfortunately I was stupid with my money when I was younger. Love your channel. Take care
