On this episode of TestDrive Showdown Victor presents two alternative SUVs to the standard German answer. The 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge Black Edition and the 2024 Range Rover Velar P400 Dynamic HSE. While the Volvo is a PHEV, the power numbers are similar enough between the two that the P400 engine in the Range Rover lines up nicely with it. Victor goes over the key differences and similarities between these two SUVs, showing the trunk space, rear seating, front seat features, and some key aspects of each.
He then hits the road in the Range Rover Velar to talk about the overall driving experience this vehicle has to offer, followed up with the Volvo XC60 to see which of these non-German luxury SUVs you should consider if you're in the market for about $100k CAD.

The Range Rover Velar is not even in the same segment as the XC60...nor price...although I would choose the XC60 - The equivalent would be the R.R. EVOQUE. At Range Rover we pay for the aesthetics and status, for the car to sit in the workshop for repairs.But I would always choose Volvo, without any doubt. The Volvo's 455 hp and 710 Nm combined with 70km of electric range are simply brutal. In Portugal, with the Volvo discount and the Government's PHEV incentives, I can buy the T6 - with 355 hp and 690Nm, for €50,000. The Range Rover Velar Dynamic HSE - Phev with 297 hp and 640 Nm, with the same level of equipment, and which does not fit into the incentives given by governments, "only costs" €100,000........ no comments

Their initial price in Europe is not close, but their prices are very close to the specific editions compared here. Very interesting review. In my opinion the Volvo (because i own it and know it very well) is a much better car overall and much more efficient and economical for europe, from then on, if you want to flex, you get the Range Rover, like the volvo as it says in the video, it is a stealth sleeper and does not speak its value. Very nice video 👍.

From European perspective Volvo is definitely winner. Even fully loaded Volvo XC60 T8 is nowhere near the price range of Velar. Depreciation of Range Rover’s is much faster than Volvo’s . And in my opinion Velar is not as reliable as the XC60, but I have no experience of that.

I was about to say also. One of these cars will be highly reliable, the other will be in the shop 3-4 times, minimum with a year.

@@r1cha4d yep! I love LR and RR products, except for their (lack of) reliability - our neighbours (farmers) bought a brand new Disco and it broke down on their first drive home from the dealership! I bought a Volvo instead, and though it probably won't be at Lexus level of reliability, I'm expecting it to be much better than a Velar...
