Your videos are soooo good! i couldn't care less about an onboard air system, but i still watched every second. I love the GX460 so more, more, more videos! The grill looks fantastic and doubt you'd want to strip off the Plasti Dip, but maybe a video about that would be good. Do you still have your stock radio? Any updates of entertainment options for the kids?
Thanks , Tim! I was really on the fence with whether this one would be entertaining enough to hold someone who wasn't doing this project . This comment makes all that work to try and balance it worth it. I've been thinking I should do a plasti-dip video but I'm waiting for it to peel. I did like 10 coats on the first run so it might be a while : ) Still looks perfect unfortunately. Would you watch if did a travelogue? Riding along with me and the dog and or family in the GX? It wouldn't be scripted so there would be less dad jokes but more me looking like an idiot, only in nature instead of the garage.
@@WastingTimeInTheWoods Haha! good point. I guess i would've never stumbled on it unless i decided to watch all your videos. i'm not a social media guy myself, but YOU gotta update that IG account!!! and yes, i'd absolutely watch a travelogue. i'm not a big camper myself, but always enjoyed the THOUGHT of camping. Also, have you thought of a 6 month update on the GX? Anything break? is it what you expected? Any regrets? Is the smoke smell finally gone? ... and it's Chris (not Tim)
@@Schmidee Sorry, Chris! I just squished the consonants together in your screen name I think : ) The IG account was created at 10am this morning but I hear you. Looks pretty shabby at the moment. I think the 6 month update is a fantastic idea... and yes it still smells like smoke. I need to Ozone it. I may try to get up to the snow this weekend and make a video on how the KO2's handle it. It's hard because I think so much of my contribution comes from the writing so I have to find a balance where I'm comfortable putting out unscripted stuff where I'm only sort of funny : ) Stay tuned and thank you for supporting the channel!
Thanks for the video update on the wiring and installation of the Smittyvilt 2780 air compressor. I too am opting for the smittybilt but the 2781 over the ARB. Mostly for the same reasons as you gave. Your comedy add ins are pretty funny 😁 I really enjoy your videos. 👍
Hey Jake! I just heard you on the RU-vid creators podcast today.... love the tips man. Stopping by to show you some support and use some of those tips you dropped today!
Got dang. You made it sound so easy but my mind can't get around how hard this is going to be. Amazing set up! 👏 wish I can do this in my 470 but probably just going to have to stick with what I have.
Go slow, you don’t need all the crap they say you need to have a good time in the woods. It makes it easier (but its not that hard to start with). I just had too much time on my hands last fall when I did all this : )
Thanks for these videos. I was finally able to mount the 2781 with the powertray and similar setup under the hood. The clearances are really tight but I was able to mount it using the rubber feet from the smitty's compressor tray on to the powertray. Minor interference from the hood strut on the on/off switch but it does seam to only effect the rubber cover of the switch and not the actual switch. If I had drilled a few mm off left, it would have been perfect.
Loved this Video!!! Very informative as I am looking to do a cheap bastard DIY onboard air for my 2008 Toyota Tundra!! Also very entertaining!! Subscribed!!
Don't use the 2780, use the 2781 or an ironman 4x4 large compressor. Mine still works fine but above 8000' it will only get up to 88-95psi I've discovered after many trips. It also overheats if you try to take 4 32" tires from 15psi to 40psi. Works fine to 35ish, but always overheats on the 4th tire when I try to go to 40PSI. I'll do a new video when my new compressor finally arrives.
You should add a relay/switch in the cabin that goes inline with your pressure switch. That way you can turn off the pump permanently from inside the cabin and lockout any drain on the battery when it's sitting, or you could do the same with a relay that pulls power from the ACC II (RUN) ignition setting. That would keep the pump off unless the vehicle is running and on. I also use my 7 year old niece for the small spaces and bolts/lights lmao. She gets to drive it off road too, as payment of course
Great idea. I'm not worried about drain too much since I trust the Smitty rocker but I will probably forget to switch it off one day. Give me regards to your niece. We all need a sous-mechanic.
That’s a good idea as I’m trying to figure out how to wire the second relay that will go into ignition on source. It would be going into one of my up switches then to a relay then to pressure switch? What would I do on the mod he did from compressor internals going to the pressure switch?
Hey Jake! I like wasting time in the woods too! Heard you on the RU-vid Creators Hub and subscribed to your channel. Sounds like from the interview that we are a bit at opposite situations with our channels. Most of our videos are about our outdoor adventures and I am looking to add some reviews and how too content. Sounds like you have mostly how-to/reviews and look to add videos of your trips. Did you film getting out to the mountains in the fresh snow you meantioned in the interview? I look forward to seeing more of your videos!!
Hey buddy! Thanks for listening and watching. I did get up to the snow. Stay tuned for a video in the next week or two. Keep having adventures, maybe we'll cross paths!
Great video! It gave me a really clear idea of what it might take to do an on-board air setup on my LR3. It looks like your pressure switch moved from the t-fitting on the compressor to the t-fitting on the manifold between shots, though. Did you find it more useful in one location over the other? And I noticed that when you moved the pressure switch, that you also installed a pressure relief valve on the t-fitting on the compressor. Can you explain why you chose to do that, as well? I haven't seen anyone else choose to do that, so just curious. Thanks!
Hey buddy. I love that Rover guys found this! You are correct. I moved it from the compressor to the manifold. I put it before the manifold inlet valve so that when you shut off the manifold, pressure builds up between the check valve and manifold triggering the compressor shut off. I put a 125psi safety blow off valve where the pressure switch had been near the compressor. I cover all this in the next video. That should be out in a week or so. Just need to find time to edit it. Thanks for watching!
Thanks! Maybe. I just got those for myself so I wouldn't worry about what I was wearing. Right now I'm more focused on finding time to make great videos to share but I'll keep it in mind down the road.
Thanks! Handles are vinyl. Everything else was Plasti. The plasti looks and is holding up way better. I just did the vinyl on the handles because of the gap.
Awesome hack. But a week too late! I just installed the ARB single with a switch pro on a power tray to my GX this weekend. But that manifold could be a great addition! Looking forward to learning about the manifold.
If you're adding a switch pro anyway thats a much better route since the Smitty is about twice as big as the ARB. I should have the manifold video up pretty soon, just need to edit it. Thanks for subscribing!
No but it overheats half way through my 4th tire (265's) if the compressor is in direct sunlight or if we're above about 7500 feet, which is most of the places we air up. I would go with a 2781 to avoid those issues. I have the big Ironman 4x4 model that I'm going to try to shove under there someday. It's about 3/4 down a bottomless project list, just after 'get a handle on your finances' and 'make amens with those you've wronged'.
I have been looking in the market for a GX470, but now I kinda looking at GX460 as you tell lol.. both look amazing but is hard to find a GX470 with under 180k.. most are over 200k and I might just go for a gx460. I’m still debating, any tips???
I am just curious on why you went with the smittybuilt 2780 vs the 2781. The 2781 has double the cfm of the 2780 for an extra $60. Was the choice based on cost ? or size for the space in the engine bay?
I wasn’t sure it would fit but knew the 2780 would. A viewer showed me how he did it with a 2781 though in his 4runner. The 2781 is a great choice if you can make it fit. Good luck!
@@WastingTimeInTheWoods .. thanks for the reply. I don't have the intention of installing under the hood. I just use an Viair 88p for my tires that I pull out from the trunk. Looking at an upgrade to the 2781 or equivalent at some point. There is even a double piston one for about $220 that puts out 10.4 cfm that I have seen ..
2780 Compressor Fitting Adapter 1/4” Male NPT to M12 x 1.25 M12X1.25 Male Metric Coupling Stainless Steel Pipe Gauge When threading in to compressor outlet it is super loose, until I tight it down to the base of the outlet and collar of the fitting. this does not seem correct.
@@WastingTimeInTheWoods Maybe. Ordered from the links provided,, I just double up on the Teflon tape. And it definitely didn't fit like the other tapered fittings. Completely loose, until I tighten to the collar.
Do you happen to know if there's a difference in amperage running through the wire between the rocker and the compressor motor VS the wire between thr rocker and the relay? My PS is rated for 30A, so if one wire has less draw on it than the other I'd like to splice that one.
Great video and sense of humor! (I hope no children were harmed during the slave-labored small hand install). You've inspired me to figure out how to duplicate this with my Viair 400P. I am wondering if I can use their sealed external pressure switch and relay, I'll have to research this a bit more. I think I may secure the compressor with some butterfly nuts and "Y" the power cable so I can still attach battery lead clamps in case I ever want to quickly take it off to take in another vehicle. I'm also thinking it wouldn't be a ton more work adding the air disconnect at each fender well like they did for the "Wifey setup". The most challenging piece would be finding or making brackets I presume. If you didn't do the above then the final addition which I think could be cool is adding something like the speedflate: www.speedflate.com as a way to air up/down simultaneously while taking up less hose space. I'm thinking in the back left portion of the engine bay (as you're facing the engine) there is enough space to store the hose. Maybe make a small compartment that opens to store the house in and free up space in the vehicle. Are you in AZ? I'm in Ahwatukee and your surroundings looked familiar. Thx again for the great video.
Hey, Jason! Good luck with the viair. Let us know how it goes. Yeah, I might get back to a four trie system but I'd only do it like a wifey set-up so I could carry to lines under the truck. Space is tight on my end with two kids and a dog. FYI - framing straps and supports might make a good bracket for cheap. That's what I was tracking towards. Galvanized steel, a couple bucks each, and in a variety of straight and angled options. I am in PHX! maybe I'll see you on the trail sometime. Good luck and thanks for watching!
@@WastingTimeInTheWoods I'm toying around with putting a metal ammo can in the front left area of the engine bay and having my 4 port tire hookup connected and stored in it. I think I can take the best of what you did and the wifey kit and combine it to work best for me. I have a message in to a couple of guys to see if they have any mounting brackets for that area on my 4th gen 4runner. I'll report back if I get it together, thanks again for the inspiration.
