Well, depending where you live, our home soils are filled with all sorts of chemicals. Where I live, the community has dozens of different poison "Pest Control" companies that spray everyone's lawn with poison to "stop pests" and put herbicides in the grass. We also live on a golf course, so there are tons of poisons sprayed on that. Let alone all the weed killers with glyphosate in it. Even though we don't spray on our land, I do not trust my soil because my neighbors do spray, and I don't know how long the sprays last in the soil, since we aren't the original owners of this home(and my parents used to use one of those companies until they finally stopped after listening to me that they don't do anything to the yards and it just costs money). That being said, I plan on making my own soil, but it's a bit difficult, costly, and it can be annoying, especially when I have tons of compost and goodies outside, but I do not trust it.

Being from west central Illinois and having grown in central and South Florida and now growing in North central Arkansas, I can agree on first two states. Arkansas though, I have an issue with the incline on my backyard. All my soil wound was away during heavy rains. With that said, my only option at this time is raised beds. Raised beds with a clay soil will not work with the knowledge I have at this time. With that said, I have to create the soil in my raised beds. I will say this though. I have put some clay soil in the bottom of totes to shorten the depth of the totes a bit and drain holes above the clay line and had good results on my tomatoes and peppers.

I'm gaining a lot of wonderful knowledge from your videos and I sincerely thank you for that. The desire of knowing the soil, nature and the plants is growing in my heart. I started looking into this world because of chilli peppers. I started growing them when I was at home due to heart problems at the age of 24 when I was also left home from work because of it. God used that period to draw me closer to Himself and put "gardening" into my heart. I love how you admire and endorse the beauty and perfection of nature because you're giving glory to the One who made all things. Thank you kindly for the knowledge you shared with me and for your care toward the planet we live on. May God bless you and your family greatly. Love from Switzerland❤

I'm SO glad I found your channel. What you are teaching is exactly what I need to hear. I've always been a believer in Nature. I love nature, and I ALWAYS questioned the difficulty of gardening because,........I have always SAID....."Why is gardening so HARD? Why do we need to do all of this stuff to our plants in our gardens when things just thrive in nature without us doing a damn thing to them?" Why do we need to apply this fertilizer at this time, and then this fertilizer at that time, and then we need to spray stuff on them to keep bugs and stuff away etc, etc.....WHY? NONE of that happens in Nature! Thanks to you, it's all becoming VERY clear. And even.....DUH.......lol Thanks

Newby gardener here. Excellent post, you fully explained 3 important questions in two posts. Potash making and use, and microbial health with the use of the forrest tea. The 3rd is more an observation, it seems garden supply companies are selling the various elements in a separated form, then we try to put them all together. Nature has already done so and probably far more efficiently than the scientists, who have probably missed something. Thanks, my garden and I are wiser for your knowledge Subscribed :)

Have you ever herd of programing your seedings? You give your seedling the poorest soil with just enough water to keep them alive and growing but not thriving. I know this may seem counter intuitive but after doings this for 2-3 weeks plant your starved seedlings/plants into rich healthy soil with regular watering. That plant will thrive and produce substantially more fruit/veg. I stumble onto this through - Stefan Sobkowiak - The Permaculture Orchard on youtube "A SECRET TECHNIQUE to growing plants from SEED (you NEED to try THIS!)". I know your pretty skeptical about new ways of gardening that's outside the box but this might be worth looking into.

you can make this with rabbit dung... also goat... sheep... deer... alpaca... any of those can be used in place of the compost/leafmould and while its not a perfect substitute because of the lack of microbial diversity... it will still fertilize your babies nicely...

@@gardenlikeaviking I thought about rabbit dung while watching the video, and then saw your comment. Would you make a "tea" out of those dung pellets as they are, or mix them with compost as with the leaf mold? Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking 2 года назад
@@arkaisk2 you can use strait rabbit dung pellets as they are and it will be good... but the best method by far is mixing them all together... dung, leaf mould, compost... because the leaf mould and compost are bursting with microorganisms and those are the real heavy lifters in the garden!!

Glad I found your channel learning all sorts of good stuff. Would Horse manure work? If so would new or more mature be best?
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking 2 года назад
@@ahll1 thank you and yes horse manure can be used for this... fresh is great as horse manure does not burn plants... mature is also good but not a requirement

Buenas tardes desde España. Podría añadirse en vez de compos, un puñado de humus de lombriz. Estoy aprendiendo mucho contigo. Gracias.

I’ve also heard ppl call it topsoil that’s under the leaves and looks like seedling soil, it’s fluffy but below that is the dark moist stuff and I’m wondering which one? Should I just use all of it? Or am I not at the oldest tree? 😅

You can do the same thing with worm castings, especially if you develop your own , more and more people are into the worm castings which worms create for us another of natures blessings.

I was just wondering this. I restarted my worm bins this past year and finally getting enough to start using directly and teas. I live in AZ so I don't have access to any forests.

I started a small leaf mold composter just before winter. I did it on only hearing a little bit about it. Glad I made it now. I am thinking I should add a thin layer of compost under the leaves to get er goin, but its just because the ground was hard soil where i put it. I never thought of scoring the surface or anything, I just had a top half of a broken plastic composter that i used, and a lid that works perfectly. I added leaves watered it and sprayed it with molasses water. I have some warm days right now in Canada and am adding leaves i had saved from last year to make it better and create more. Heres hoping it works. I know not to flip it very often if at all, to keepbit from heating up.

I live in the desert in Arizona. We don't have forests close, but would be of benefit for me to drive to our mountains (Flagstaff) to look for leaf mold? Since it is a totally different area would this benefit my "Phoenix" area or should I just stick to my homemade compost from my backyard?

Great video, my only comment is to be mindful of the "oldest forest" and "biggest tree". Forests are delicate systems and you should not just dig a 5 gallon bucket worth of soil from a single area, especially a large tree. Be conservative, and collect from several locations as to not drastically disturb the indigenous soil. Yes, we need to grow our food well, but we need to respect the complex ecosystems that help us.

this is very true my friend thank you for emphasizing this point.... if you'd like to watch this video I made about leaf mold collections I do believe I also conveyed that point ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H4LBFn-4Ut8.html

Hi Nate: Can I prepare this solution in the fall and keep it indoors and use it when starting my seedlings in March, for example? Thank you.
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking 5 месяцев назад
no this must be made and used immediately... but you can store the compost inside if you need to and then make the solution at time of use
