I think something that would be nice to have for the next season would be the stats of the attackers. Their height, weight, age and in things like the Shank Tank their kill count.

@@JeffPhillipsSelfDefence Absolutely. It would also even give you the opportunity to have a sliding scale based off the physical stats of the various individuals. You could throw in some lightweight "tweakers." It also gives crucial context for us viewers when we are trying to use the drills as discussion points. At least in this season there weren't as many wild swings like last season such as the disparity between Mike and Seth.

Props to Jeff and his attackers for one putting yourselves in the firing line daily throughout the filming of the USDC and two the judges for doing thier best in trying to score as fairly as possible when in my point of view self defence is not a combat sport with rules and etc so scoring is not a thing but you all have be phenomenal for betterment and spectical of USDC for fans like myself

Hey Jeff, another really interesting video that really shines a light on the attackers and production side and brings out a bit more of an educational content. Rokus' editing/narration is really throwing you guys under the bus at times :) I get it though, as he's trying to create a compelling narrative from the footage he's got, and all "reality" type shows are heavily massaged from their raw form into what the audience actually see, so it's good for this behind the scenes stuff. The attackers are the baddies on the day, but the judges are being turned into baddies in the videos! I'd like you to appear in the actual episode more, (or at least Rokas saying something similar) so you can point out your comments at the start. e.g. most decisions were unanimous, and done without most of the camera footage, and also that some of the "knockout strikes" weren't counted because of the angle the judges had or because the attacker themselves didn't think it would count etc. If _everyone_ in the comments see's Jeff's pulled kick then that's the kind of thing the editing should get ahead of and answer in the show, e.g. you or Rokus popping up saying "yeah that should have counted but we didn't see it and the attacker didn't feel it". Maybe Rokus needs test screenings for season 3? :) Of course, saying all that, I know Rokus is/was suffering from long covid, so maybe him getting out the episodes in whatever format he can is better than nothing! I definitely felt the editing in the latest episode (bouncers) as everything kind of felt skimmed over and rushes for time, whereas I reckon he could have spun an entire episode out of that court room drama. He knows the youtube analytics more than me so maybe 16 minutes is some kind of optimal time, but it feels like the contestants and attackers went through a lot of pain only for it all to be cut! ps just to clarify, as you said Aaron was already out by this point, on the actual day did the contestants all do stage 1 each, and then it went to the next stage. Or did Jeff do all 5 (or whatever) stages himself, then Craig was up etc?
@JeffPhillipsSelfDefence
@JeffPhillipsSelfDefence 21 день назад
@@iwantagoodnameplease we were very pressed for time to get the scoring done. With Rokus sick(I didn’t want to judge without him) we pretty much had the half day when the guys went sightseeing to score all events. In future we’ll debrief nightly which wasn’t possible this time. I trust Rokus editing and knowledge of RU-vid, he knows more than I ever will about that stuff. I do the challenges, sets etc All 5 attacks were done to each competitor one after the other and others could not watch until they completed theirs. This is where the regular came in for Craig as he had nothing left for the last couple of attacks.

I think it is interesting to see the different participant's perspectives. I can sympathize after each person explains their reasoning. I'm actually glad this time around that people were trying not to hurt each other as much. I was watching Sensei Seth, a participant of the first season, and one thing you see he complains about is how hard he was getting hit. I mean I get realism and etc, but everyone still has to go to work tomorrow and not have a long term injury or something (which I've gotten from sparring, and it really sucks).
@captchagod64
@captchagod64 20 дней назад
I don't think i'd go as far as saying the judges were made the villains in editing. Of course some decisions are going to be controversial, but that's just the nature of the game. Every time they run the event, they get better at it, but theres always an element of uncertainty

You did a great job on this. You're exactly right that there's room to question -- would clothes have stopped it? did the edge hit in the right direction? etc etc. I think you greatly improved the accuracy since last year by going to paint instead of the markers. My only suggestion is that no smear lipstick might give you a truer result than paint, but the difference is probably marginal. I'm curious -- does the scenario allow you to use verbals (offer the attacker money, tell them the police are coming, pull a "hey look over there!" trick, etc.) or is the roleplayer instruction to close and stab no matter what the competitor says?

Jeff definitely pulled his kick. I really enjoy this series, both season 1 and 2 are great. But y’all do need to improve your refereeing game and attackers need to recognize better when someone pulls their kick or other hit for safety reasons. Otherwise you’re going to teach all of the contenders in future years to think they have to go full force and actually try to knock attackers out and then you’re going to end up with more injuries.

Outside of actually getting into street fights and maybe the military, this is the best stress tested education I've seen on the reality of self defense and it's ability to be applied in the heat of the moment. Enough so, that I'm actively trying to recruit my former krav Maga instructor to watch this series and start a similar school here in North Carolina, USA. I love that Jeff Philips and his crew aren't pretending to know everything and are actually focused on trying things to see if they work or not and if so, why? And if not, also....why? The stress testing of realistic scenarios in common environments makes so much sense that I am baffled that its so rare to see on offer from martial arts & self defense schools.

I'd enjoy seeing a random weapon-vs-weapon event. Not just actual weapons, but improvised weapons too -- I'm partial to the rolled up magazine, personally. I think that would be great for the audience and for the learning perspective even if you'd get a lot of "no decision" results from a contest perspective. I always liked the saying "in a knife fight, the loser dies in the street, the winner dies at the hospital."

The USDC is MY SHOW right now, loved season 1, great job in production! I like Ranton’s approach to the shank tank, “you’re gonna go the hospital, make peace with that. Try and knock that joker out” (I’m paraphrasing but great strategy)
@smexijebus
@smexijebus 2 дня назад
I think the inconclusivity of shank tank lends itself to leaning more into subjective scoring (comparing against one another) rather than objective scoring (dead or alive/knockout endings). It might make more sense to not stop fights on supposed knock-out hits and just let it play out, then judge afterwards. Ending fights on knockouts also means each contestant is exerting themselves for different amounts of times depending on which shots are convincing enough or not. It might be better to let them all go until the time ends or they get a tap out, then analyze the footage afterwards where knockouts can be evaluated a bit more thoroughly and points can be adjusted accordingly (like 'this shot here would've knocked them out so all the wounds after this point don't count). But, of course, you guys are the ones actually doing this and have a much better understanding of the situation, I trust your judgment and expertise.

Nice one, guys! As for whether Craig is a regular guy, I guess compared to the likes of Natan Levy and Jeff Chan, you could say he is. But I'd say he's still significantly stronger, tougher and more skilled than the average person, who probably doesn't think about this stuff a lot and would limit their physical training to other sports. That said, an actual average person probably doesn't watch this stuff (yet), so it would be hard to get them in. So fair enough 😄
