This device is going to be my first foray into NAS systems and your video was super clear and simple to digest, great breakdown of connections and setup etc!
The one thing I was looking for: how to set up the NAS as a drive on your mac. For some reason I couldn't find it in the set up instructions with UGREEN anywhere. You just gave the step-by-step instructions I was looking for. THANK YOU!
Excatly. WD sercetly changed that. I have had a few SMR failures and I was able to rebuild my NAS on two occassions. SMR drives might have a huge cache but cache is needed to write chuncks of data blocks. Every time the HDD writes something, Datablocks are re-written. This slows down the entire NAS. CMR drives are much faster and are safer for your data.
Nicely done video that will serve me well when I receive the DXP6800 Pro. I especially appreciate how you tied in an easy way to achieve 10gb transfer speeds using a 10gb capable switch. Thank you!
Is it possible to use the 10gb adapter with a usb c port? I don’t seem to have thunderbolt on my desktop pc and there’s no space for another pci card. Feels like I’m stuck at 2.5gbe?
Would love to see a follow up video which includes how to use LR Classic with the NAS. Is it true that you can’t have a LR Classic Library on ANY NAS? Thanks for your videos. Always very informative and easy to follow.
If I recall correctly there are some limitations when you expand your harddisk array (perhaps also dependant on the RAID setup). There obvioulsy will also be some (partial) file rebuilding involved when you add one or more drives. It might be preferred to use disks of the same storage size otherwise you run the risk of not being able to fully benefit from the entire disk capacity.
Thanks for this video, It was extremely helpful. I would be interested in using light room classic with this NAS and will watch for future video on this.
Nice video. I'd love to see a tutorial on setting this up as a Time Machine repository, and a comparison between it and the comparable device from Synology and WD.
Wow. I found your presentation very easy to follow. I would love to see your recommended set up for using the UGreen NAS as a Google Photos replacement (so family photo and video storage/remote access) as well as a media server for movies and TV shows (just local watching locally).
I keep coming back to you great video on setting up this Ugreen NAS. Would you be able to maybe make a video on how to upgrade the hard drives to a larger size with out loosing your date? I have been looking everywhere have not found a video explaining this. Thanks....
My first NAS also. This was great for someone that knows nothing about a NAS. Now, someone who knows nothing, I want to copy all of my dvd library to this, add Plex, and know how to access my movies from my apple 4k tvs on my TV's. Some apple tv's are ethernet connected and one is wireless. Any chance you could make a video on this? Many thanks!
@@forestchaput Got my UGreen in the mail! Just waiting on the HDDs to arrive. I have this video and your advanced settings video ready to go when they arrive!
This was helpful because I got the same system. The only thing I wish you went into more detail was possibly upgrading the RAM in the port underneath. Could you do a supplemental video on this topic?
@@forestchaput Thanks, I think I have it all figured out except one little aspect...those silicone pads you are supposed to use with the M.2 SSD drives. Technical support was no help at all. It's like they've never seen their own product and was reading from the same book that I had (the one it came with). If you follow the instructions in the book (I think it started on page 9...don't have it in front of me), it says to open up the port. Then you are to unscrew the screw on the other side where you will plug the M.2 drive in. Then you plug in the drive, and then secure it with the screw you had just taken out. THEN it says to put the silicone pad on the "Top" of the SSD and then close the access door and screw it back in. My problem with this is that, if I do that, the silicone pad will now be stuck to the access door. That means you can't really ever open the access door again unless you want to rip it away from the stuck pad. AND, there is very little space between the SSD and the access panel. You'd have to squish it shut. There is room underneath the M.2 SSD for the pad, but I don't want to go sticking it where it doesn't belong. I got both M.2 drives, the upgraded RAM, and three of the four 22 TB hard drives in the mail (the last one should come on Saturday). So I still have a few days before I turn it on for the first time. You don't really need a whole other video if you want, I just need help from someone who knows what they are talking about to figure out the proper placement for that silicone pad for each of the M.2 drives. Thanks for your time and expertise!
For the 6 & 8 bay NAS, I'm curious why you're not recommending RAID6. Since a big part of *WHY* we're using a RAID array is for data redundancy. By using RAID6, we allow for up to 2 drive failures. In RAID5, we only get one! I have an old QNAP 5-bay device, and over the years I have had multiple HD failures. It's the old adage - it's not if you'll have a HD failure, it's WHEN.
I'm a fan of RAID5 with a second unit to backup to which is also in RAID5. But yes, RAID6 is much better if you don't have a second unit to act as a backup.
At the 33-second mark, you mention that it supports up to 8GB of RAM. How is that possible? The 8GB DDR5 4800MHz RAM offers the latest in processing speeds, enhances both software and system performance, and comes with the option to expand the memory up to 64GB.
Real appreciate the detailed walk through. Is it possible to connect smb on iOS devices? I’ve been having hard time get that connection working on my phone and iPad. Even though the same credential works just fine on Mac
Thank you for explaining things so thoroughly!! I had a question about the connectivity how come you cant skip the 10gb switch and plug directly say mac studio to the ugreen since it has 2 ethernet ports in the back? Is the switch absolutely needed? Also if I wanted to connect a PC and Mac to this whole setup the switch would be the way to go right, I could plug all three devices into the switch instead of the router and one cable to the router right?
@@forestchaput Can you elaborate why? It is normally entirely possible to setup a direct connection between the two devices but you would have to correctly configure the address being used.
Is there a way to store a Photos Library on the NAS? I moved my Photos Library from Mac to external SSD because it got too big. Now it’s too big for the SSD hence I purchased this DXP4800+, my first foray into NAS
Hi Forest! Thanks for the incredibly detailed setup guide, I really appreciate it. I'm curious though - once you start the hard disk test, do you need to wait 3-5 days before starting to use the NAS? Or is that test being done in the background and you can get started on loading files onto the NAS right away?
Are the two ports on the network extender meant for two different devices? Or is one meant to be a wired connection back to the router, and the other a new device?
@@forestchaput This has just turned into a money PIT for me!!!!!! I'm doing what you're showing and it's not connecting. I buy a 10G switch and it then costs MORE to buy Module Transceivers....? Why? I just want to connect to the $700 system and I can't?!😡About to contact Ugreen and give it all up.
Is there a way to get around the having to log in via SMB every time the computer is re-started? My OneDrive and Mega plug ins on Finder start automatically when I start the computer.
Great video, and the tip on upgrading to a 10gb switch was worth it's weight in gold! I'm occasionally getting a 100083 error when trying to transfer files between my MacStudio and the UGreen NAS, however. Any ideas on what might be causing this? It doesn't happen on every file and there doesn't seem to be a pattern.
Would like to connect everything like you are showing the third way. I have a DECO Mesh Wi-Fi network where I have multiple DECO units in the house one thought is connected into the modem. Now I have one in my office but it is connected to the main unit via Wi-Fi. So would that work if I plugged DECO into the 10Gib router but not sure because its only connected to the main via the Wi-Fi connection. The DECO is AXE5400 Pro. Real newbie here thanks for any help. Dave...
I have had my DXP 4800 for one day. It worked, connected, setup and worked for about 5 hours. It then disconected and it can't be found on the network. My synology NAS is connected and working fine. Same connections. I have rebooted everything and no change. Called customer service and the lady who tried to help me was no a technical person at all. So far it appears it is a brick? Not sure. UGH. Should work more than for 5 hours.
Hmmm. That's not good. Yes, the hardware is very high quality so I would expect much more than five hours of use. Hopefully you got it working. I'm sorry to hear that!
Thank you for this great video but I already installed the NAS initially but need to re-install from scratch and it doesn't allow me to get in unless I use the correct User ID, NAS Name and Password. How to I just START OVER FRESH INSTALL
Great video, but one quick question... Can you please further explain what you meant at 25:30? You mentioned that when adding additional drives it won't erase the new drive, but earlier you said when adding new drive it requires a formatting. I bought the 6-bay system, along with 5 new 20tb drives. However, I have a 20tb from an old NAS system with info and years of data. Are you saying that there's a way to install it w/o having to format it?
Apologies. No, you won’t be able to install that 20TB drive into the NAS and keep the data. It will need to be formatted when you install it. I think what I meant was that if you filled a NAS with five drives and later wanted to add a sixth, the data on the five drives would remain intact, but the sixth drive would need to be erased to become part of the RAID array.
Your explanation of how to connect was excellent, however I have a (probably dumb) question. Since the DXP 4800 plus has both 10gb and 2.5 gb ports, could I bypass the switch and get a Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter, as you mentioned, and simply plug my iMac directly into the NAS, bypassing the switch. Then, connect the 2.5gb port on the NAS into my router to provide access via wireless or internet (say with my laptop). This would only be a 1gb connection since that's what my router ethernet ports are. I only have my iMac desktop and a lap top sorely no need for all those additional ports in a switch. Would this work or would I absolutely have to go through a switch for 10gb?
Hi, is this NAS capable to stream 4k movies from Plex I’m trying to get a NAS for my movies. You did a great job explaining the connection process. Thanks!!
At 2:50 in the video you mention you were going to leave a link to a RAID calculator in the description, but I don't see it? Did you forget to include the link or am I just blind?
Thanks for pointing that out! I've added the link to the description but here's a quick link to the RAID calculator!: www.synology.com/en-us/support/RAID_calculator
Is there a way to access the data from my NAS offline via USB or Thunderbolt? For example, if I am in a place without internet and I took the device with me.
A little confused, the drive test didn't seem to actually run any test for me... it just initialized my pool almost immediately ..and that was it. Am I missing something? If it's running in the background, is there a way to view its progress?
I have a question: I have the 8bay NAS from Ugreen and I want to connect it direct to my MacBook Pro, without the Router and the Switch in between, can I do it? Can I connect the NAS direkt with a 10Gbit adapter / Thunderbolt to my Mac ? Do I need a 10gbit adapter or can I use as well a 2.5 adapter ?
When trying to connect to the local server in Finder, I keep getting the error message "There are no shares available or you are not allowed to access them on the server. Please contact your system admin to resolve the problem". Any idea what's happening here?
On part where i try to connect my mac to the nas but it says There was a problem connecting. There are no shares available or you are now allowed to access them on the server. What am i doing wrong?
Why does the NAS have two Ethernet-Ports? Can I connect one to the router and the 10GB-Ethernet to my computer? In your Option 3 you showed the need for an Ethernet-Switch... Can't the NAS "Be" the Switch? Thanks for the good Video, that's my only question left:)
So im having trouble connecting my nas to my finder. I have the SmB connection, im typing my user name and password but its not recognizing me please help.
what about the fourth connection option via thunderbolt direct connect between NAS and Mac/PC? Other NAS-System support this, UGREEN has TB4, but I do not see it in the settings... 🤷
hey, thank you for such an explanation .. it help alot for my setup .. but now when im trying to connect it using the “connect to server” option it showing me error “socket is not connected “ .. can you help here ?
Trying to set up my 10G network. Question, I purchased the adaptor "USBC to ethernet" adaptor but my computer does not have a thunderbolt connection only USBC. I tried and no connection I did then try my laptop which does have the thunderbolt connection and it did work but only 2.5G so not sure then what's going on there. But then I guess I have to have this thunderbolt port??
That's a great question. I don't know of any USB-C (non-thunderbolt) adapters that are 10Gb. The fact that it operates at 2.5Gb is awesome though. Here's my go-to adapter for 10Gb with thunderbolt: bhpho.to/469YVfM
I'm very new to this so if someone could help me understand. If my router is 10gb compatible will I be able to connect my NAS to my router and then my CPU without the switch? My system just came in and I want to know what I still need to buy for fastest connection.
I have to ask one question. I have just 1 drive 22tb I cann't choose raid option and the others I will buy one by one at time(same 22tb). So Will I lose data because of that or not If I choose raid 5 or something like that secure option ?
I got the DXP4800, but on my windows 11 Explorer find the NAS under network, but no Folder inside and I can't add anything. Anybody knows why? The storage space is set up and while the disc check was running there was a folder "personal folder" which I could add anything as well, but that's gone now
When I try connecting to my server it is saying connection failed for some odd reason, I am on macbook pro 2020 M1 and it was allowing me to login last night with no problem using the same username and password so I''m a bit confused. Can you help at all?
also getting this error: 'There are no shares available or you are not allowed to access them on the server. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem.' to be clear this is not on the website, this is when I am trying to connect to the server as a registered user
@@forestchaput yep, it was the my repeater creating a second round of ip for my pc, and my nas was on the router, so my pc was looking for 0.1 and my nas was on 1.244, my dad ended up connecting both
Hey thanks for the video! I just got around to setting mine up today. Got the drives installed (2 8 GB drives in bays 1&2) and the router and power connected. It’s been flashing all front lights in sequence for a bit now and isn’t showing up on scan from a Windows computer connected to the same router or an iPhone wirelessly connected to the router. Any tips? Does it just take a bit to initialize on first boot?
Uh oh. That doesn't sound good. Could be a DOA boot drive? I've used the BIOS on the UGREEN quite a bit (to install TrueNAS). In the BIOS there is a boot drive selection - maybe double check that it's set to use the internal M.2 drive for boot?
I just got my NAS and have it up and running but I can't connect to it via my Mac... it always gives me an Error... I restarted both the NAS and the MAC but still the same Problem... Does anyone know, what I have to do?
@@forestchaput Wow thanks for the fast answer! Yes I enabled SMB-Acces and I tried the Name and the IP-Adress... The first try also brings me to the Username and Password window. I type in the correct Username and Password and it gives me an error. After that there is no Login-Window again, just errors... I Just wrote to UGREEN-Support... hope they have an Idea😅 Also in the new Software there is a 4. Point unter the windows you have at 26:41... don't really know what that means to be honest... It says: 4. After joining the domain, please use "domain name\account number + password" to log in SMB, e.g.: ABC||xiaoming + Aa123456 . Again under Go-Server or where is point 4 supposed to happen?
@@forestchaput Yes i enabled SMB-Access and tried the Name and IP-Adress... Same outcome. I Just wrote a Mail to UGREEN-Support. Hope thy Know something. Also there is a 4th point now in activating SMB. Ist says: "4. After joining the domain, please use "domain name \account number + password" to log in SMB, e.g.: ABC| |xiaoming + Aa123456" Maybe you can do a RU-vid-Short to explain this?🤔 Your Videos, also the second one, are so helpful. Unfortunately I hit the Barrier at SMB, but we will see, if I can overcome it:D
@@forestchaput I already answered twice with further Details of the Problem but those don't show up for some reason... but now, 6 Hours later, I found the solution: I didn't create a Folder on the NAS. Apparently you have to. Now the Finder finds the Server and sees my created Folder and "Personal Folder". So if anyone has the same Problem, just create a Folder!
so my feed has been inundated with this release/embargo lift. def intrigued by the product, but no one is talking about the real world read/write speeds over Thunderbolt, which will literally be the majority of users preference. sounds like there is some unexplained slowness when it's connected via 10gbe, and bizarre that none of the reviews are reporting r/w via thunderbolt. for whatever reason, I've got a weird feeling about this product - essentially a phone charging company releases a very critical workflow component, via KickStarter? smells funny
We won’t do paid reviews so I didn’t want to make that the topic of our video. I can say that I’ve had it in-use for three weeks now and it hasn’t skipped a beat.
My speeds through 10Gb are around 500 MB/s (yes Bytes, not Bits) which is on par with our rack mounted QNAP editing NAS we’ve been using for four years.
RMSP: There is an option in the software to do a full system reset. (( this isn't any software that I can login to that controls the 4800. )) is there a rep or someone I can call at ugreen getting no where Im 48hours in to this process
I think I should just get a MacBook Pro 10Gbs with a 4-bay Thunderbolt Encloser. Can I use Appachy Server to create accounts for my editors to download /upload media over the internet? at this point my Ugreen NAS is a do nothing brick.
Hmmm. I just did a quick Google search and it looks like some folks on Reddit are suggesting downloading the UGREEN app on your smartphone. Apparently there is a "forgot my password" function built into the app when logging into the NAS.
@@forestchaput@RMSPtv ok, it does have a forgotten password; after selecting this option, it says two options: login with other admin accounts, for which there is only one log in I am aware of. or to click the reset button on NAS which I've done mulitble times and still asks for Login which when ever I use it tells me its incorrect Ive walked away and came back tried again multiple times always same result. its says forget password but you need the password to get the password its redickuloss
My goal is to have the 4bay Ugreen NAS with 4 drives on Raid5. However, I'm on a budget and I'd like to start with just 1 drive. Can I run it with just 1 drive for like a year and then expand to 4 drives and switch to raid5?
