Being able to smoke inside is one of my greatest pleasures. I often say that smoking inside is, in fact, the only civilized place to smoke. Especially in a place like Texas, being related to outside smoking guarantees that it's either too hot, too cold, or there are mosquitos. The CamFil 2000 Smoke Filtration System I installed in my office was supposed to resolve any issues regarding smoking inside. However, after a recent meeting when my cigar smoke was bothering some friends, I decided that my system needed to be upgraded!
So, in today's video, I review these recent upgrades to my smoke filtration system that take it to the MAXX! Previously, the particle filtration was MERV-13, which only filters out 85% of particles in the smallest category. But by adding a true HEPA filter, they system now filters 99.5% of all particles. In addition to the 125 lbs of activated carbon, there is simply nothing better!
The CamCleaner 2000 is an industrial air filtration unit that is massive! The thing is amazing and has impressive capabilities, able to support static pressure of up to 4 bars. However, it's one limitation is that it is quite large. I am working with CamFil to develop a smaller range of smoke filtration products that are more appropriate for personal and light industrial use. More details to follow!

You may want to test the path the air is taking in the room when your system is running at higher power. Just like streams and rivers have channels that flow faster than others, you may have corners of your room that are stagnating while the intake fan essentially pulls a vacuum of clean air straight to itself from any point outside air enters the room, which drastically reduces the effectiveness of the system. Basically, if doesn't matter how much air is being filtered if it's only processing the clean air coming in from outside. A good test can be done with a laser pointer. Turn off the lights in the room, turn your filter system on at various speeds, and use a red laser pointer to illuminate the smoke particles in the room while your system is doing its thing. It will make it easy to spot air pockets that aren't moving, and it might be as simple as a small fan positioned carefully to keep those pockets circulating.

Was going to say the same thing. You might be turning over the air, but certain areas might not being turned over nearly as much as others. Which could lead to pokers that will retain the smoke longer.

Amazing to see the system and the process. Cigar smoking is the best kind of obsession! I also started to use the Berger Lamp system at home on the recommendation of Rekha when I visited No6. They have so many wonderful scents and the strength of it can work to counteract the smell of a cigar. Wish I could have sampled the gigantes! The entire Patel family were so welcoming and hospitable when I was there. Can't wait to get back.

Excellent Kirby, we all benefit greatly from your pursuit of perfection. For those of us who are interested in smoking inside, which we can agree is a daily luxury, but who doesn't have a five figure budget for air filtration, I would recommend a Rabbit Air A3 with a 6-stage filtration including a BioGS HEPA filter. You are able to monitor the air quality in the Rabbit Air app (PM 1, 2.5 and 10). I have had up to six friends smoking pipes in my living room at the same time and the Rabbit Air takes care of all smoke and odor. For cigars I have built a separate smoke lounge utilizing a Purifan (five stage filtration and activated charcoal) combined with an AC Infinity Cloudline Pro T8 which is a powerful inline duct fan, yet very quiet (42 decibel on highest setting). Both of these "systems" can be obtain for $1000 or less each.

I’m actually really surprised that high tech system didn’t have a HEPA filter already. Even my simple rabbit air at home has one. As for diffuser, I have something similar from Ashleigh & Burwood. It works really wel after I’ve smoked a cigar in my cigar room, especially with some stronger scents like cedar.

Excellent Kirby as always. But just remember happy Wife = Happy Life, unless you enjoy the temperature going up!🤣🤣🤣 I have a HEPA filtration system as I have been diagnosed with COPD (I already had Asthma and Permanent AFIB). I have always enjoyed good cigar and Pipe tobacco aromas, so even though I can't smoke anymore I enjoy these still. I used to many many years ago enjoy my French cigarettes sans filtres but did not like the after odours so I had mobile air filters back then. But good quality cigar and Whiskey/Cognac/Armagnac odours are still amongst my eau de vie's. Thanks again.

Older styles of cigars were generally milder and produced less smoke than we mostly seem to like now. Do you think the shift from mostly smoking cigars indoors, to mostly smoking outdoors changed our preferred cigars? Some cigars I've smoked have smoke thats barely even visible outdoors and on the other hand a tiny liga privada t52 coronet (4x32 i think) puts out a literal smoke screen if there's little wind.

Adding a lot of resistance across the system. Definitely effective though. Wouldn’t bother with the panel filter at the back(not that it’ll get blocked). Once the carbons settled there shouldn’t be any breaches. I’d even toy with dropping the rating of your ‘pre-filter’ simply for saving energy usage. Very impressed, it’s nice to overkill a problem sometimes.
@kirbyallison

This system can support up to 4 bars of static pressure (which is extraordinary), so the system easily maintains airflow despite the increase in static pressure of adding the HEPA filter.

The HEPA filter increases static pressure but whether it changes airflow is a function of the design of the system. This CamFil unit has a variable rate motor that increases the speed to achieve a fixed airflow and can accommodate up to 4 bars of static pressure at 2,000 CFM (the unit is a beast). So, in my case, it will increase energy consumption, but airflow will remain the same.
@bentleyspotter
@bentleyspotter 10 месяцев назад
@@kirbyallison does your unit have a VFD? It’s very possible to increase the motor speed to ensure constant air speed with filter loading but it is not something that is added from the get go normally, especially not on a low loading system. HEPA’s by nature of their very low pass through rate will always lower air speed. Still surprised you didn’t work with Airflow System or Filter-1 which are both ‘bespoke’ industrial air cleaner companies in the DFW area. You may be interested in adding other standalone air purifiers for other rooms of your house. May I suggest Austin air (made in Buffalo). To have a room with smokers and non-smokers and not have the non-smokers smell cigar is unlikely. The distribution system has to draw the air away from the non-smoker to the smoker. Also the non-smoker may be more sensitive to the smoke. And to not have the smoke smell in other rooms in the house the smoking room should be treated as a sealed room like a clean room. All wall ceiling, wall floor joints have to be sealed, doors sealed, light switches, receptacles and any other penetrations have to be sealed. Then you can do an air pressure test on the room to see how tight it is.
@asim5088
@asim5088 10 месяцев назад
Why not exhaust the smoke vs filtering. I feel like In order to get the air to “Ambient” conditions would require a finer micron filter with a lot of activated carbon which will effectively cause more resistance thus mulling your CFM/Air changer per minute. Exhausting to the Atmosphere is always going to be the best way IMO. Great video and detail!

Kirby - you've touched on a lot of important technical considerations for a cigar room, but if takes air 3 to 5 minutes to change, that is a long time. Sure, as cigar smokers we want to rationale that "it's really quick" and "it's more than enough!" - but the reality is that: it's not - especially from the perspective of the non-smoker, like your friend. Consider holding your breath for five minutes and then I think we can agree that 3 to 5 is a long time. In the years I've been enjoying cigars, I've been lucky to travel around the US and the world and smoked in a variety of lounges. Some quite simple and others quite posh. When in London, I typically spend my time in the upstairs lounge at Fox's and have not been to either Cavendish or Davidoff. But two smoking rooms stand out in my mind with regards to smoke abatement: The Sheraton Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and the Davidoff Lounge at The Tobacco Shop of Ridgewood in New Jersey. When it comes to filtration and/or abatement, most lounges place the port in one spot of the room. This means that regardless of origination point, that smoke must make its way across the room to the intake. Along the way, fluid dynamics plays its part and while we think it's a clear and straight path to the intake, the smoke does all kinds of other things (and directions). This is where the point of irritation comes with both smokers and non-smokers alike swatting away the smoke with their hands. The commonality at the Sheraton and Tobacco Shop is the placement of the intake vents. Both places have multiple intake vents that are positioned directly above the chairs of the smokers. The Sheraton has larger intakes while Ridgefield has small, 6" circular ports - the key is that they are above the smoker and the smoke naturally rises and is sucked into the system - never to waft across the room. In my own testing in my smoking room, the best results are always when I set below the exhaust intake. If I sit even four feet away, fluid dynamics takes control and the smoke is not abated as quickly as I desire. And I want immediate abatement. In my room, I don't filter and recirculate. I just don't think it's the way to go. This means that I must make up for 100% replacement with very oversized AC and heating. However, since it's only for a few hours a week, it's an expense I can bear. My other friends practice more of a balance between exhaust and recirculation in their rooms (five of us have our own smoking rooms with differing practices and we compare notes). With all this verbiage in mind, I encourage you to consider intake placement in the room. See if you can position ports above the smoking positions. I think that will be more effective (both with the smoke and cost) than the other solutions you've outlined - and I'm a skeptic of the diffuser thing. My friends use a diffuser in the bathroom of Capitol Cigar in Bethesda, which makes for a wonderful respite while taking a break, but a diffuser in a smoking environment seems like makeup on a pig to me. Good Luck and Thanks for the videos!

I can’t imagine any cigar lounge achieving more than 20-30 full air changes an hour. It’s pretty significant. Thanks for sharing!
@onocoffee
@onocoffee 10 месяцев назад
@@kirbyallison I agree. That's why I'm coming to the position that it's more than just airflow/changes. Those are important, to be sure. My room is about 3200 cubic feet and I think the exhaust is pulling 1500 cu ft/min. On full blast, with the outside door open, you can feel the breeze through the room. But, if I'm not sitting under the intake, smoke will drift in all directions - even away from the direction of the intake. It's confounding!

On the decoy front you are underestimating your's wife mind. If you only have one scent that is present while a cigar is lit her mind will link the scent to the presence of tobacco smoke becoming substantially more sensitive to the scent. A more devous solution is necessary. Smart diffusers are available one by pura has two scent reservoirs & a control app. By setting up a random scent schedules & occasionally switching the schedules before a smoke properly bamboozling her nose is more than possible. Also a crate of bath bombs is a excellent distraction. GL HF
