@@staceycato5859 Hahaha the same thing happened to me when I got my peace lilly years ago! ... I was asking on forums thinking some weird disease had struck it and the answer was "it's dehydrated". I watered it and ... heck, that thing really was just dehydrated LOL.
In my opinion it is the easiest and hardy plant for indoor at all. Even if they dry out, the will return very fast. It is for me a non problem plant. Only spider plants are more easy.
Yeah/Right..... I'm a roughneck, construction guy who just happens to like plants at home, indoors and outdoors. My mother is the Peace Lily Queen and they bloom (potted or not) at her command. It took her 30 years to teach me these basic steps. LEAVE THEM ALONE! I currently have 4 Peace Lillies and they DO NOT care for you to read to them, bless them, stare at them, or touch them. Currently, my 4 share 27 blooms and I learned that they love red neck love. Indoors, between 69-71 degrees, SE window, 4 foot fluorescent light with grow light bulbs, one filter full of used coffee grinds every 6 weeks (Dunking Dark), and every 5-7 days water till it runs out of the bottom. Other than that, they don't want me to look at them on my way by. Of the 4, 3 of them are over 30 years old and 3 generations. The 4th is a Lowes plant that's 6-7 and a hybrid.
I was given 2 from my mom's funeral 2 weeks ago. The ones from my dad's funeral in 2015 died.🥺 It's sitting in a pot and then that's inside of a brown woven basket. Do I need to take it out the basket?
@@denisela3403 I definitely took my first one and my second one out of the basket one was in a hard plastic container I wanted those drainage holes open the pot and basket was so tight I had to have my husband help me pull it out of there if you don't mess with them they do better my first one I think I worried too much about misting and then I thought I should split it and everything died so I cut it to the dirt and set it outside one day my husband said your peace lily is sprouting so I brought it back in and repot it it it's doing fairly well some new Leaf grilling my second one I found at the grocery store it was only $18 and it is huge compared to what you will pay at a flower shop they start at $45 and go up to about 90 with my new one I use Miracle-Gro one tiny spoon per gallon then I set the whole plant into a wash basin which is square doesn't really matter just so you can see how much water is taken in then I put 3 to 4 in of Miracle-Gro water and set the pot down into it I leave it overnight drain it off the next day all my blooms are spent now but I'm hoping it will Bloom for me again my first one I was missing all the time for moisture the flower shop gentleman told me to stop messing with it and quit missing so far it's doing really good haven't lost any leaves I have it in a South window and it's probably five to six feet away from the center of those double doors good luck
I started with 1 Peace Lily 6 yrs ago. It was given to us from our baby granddaughters funeral. Ever since then I have been splitting the mother pot to make others. Then I left the mother pot alone and was splitting off of the other. If pots. I give the new pots away. Yes give away. I keep about 6 pots myself. 3 are large plants. I do this in honor of my granddaughter. I love ur video because it has told me things that I didn’t know. Thank you very much.
October 2020 my neighbour threw out the plant I have, I picked it up and she's been doing very well. I moved it to water, it's in a bright not direct light space, and she's growing beautifully, and she just blossomed. I'm so happy!
My favorite plant. I have two huge ones that I have had in my care for almost 10 years. I also have several small leafed ones. I recently acquired two variegated ones. All my peace lillies flower all the time. Easy care for me because they are pretty vocal.
Indestructible plant in my case. I've had it for about 5 years now and it has grown huge leaves. Now I am working on the flowering part, hopefully this year I get it to flower.
You covered it quite well. I would add that since Spathiphyllums have vigorous root systems, (as shown herein), potting them in large pots encourages them to grow bigger, remain healthy and also reduces the likelihood of them drying out and wilting. If one wants to restrict the pot size you can periodically divide the plant, (as shown herein). Alternatively one can repot by pruning about 1/3 of the roots off the root ball and refreshing the soil mix with new soil. When keeping Spathiphyllums in smallish pots it’s a good idea to leech the soil every few months to flush out salts / mineral buildup that can damage plant tissues.
I wonder if you could tell me what I did wrong with my peace lily, which I owned for over 15 years. It was beautiful, but I thought it had overgrown the pot it was planted, as well as the soil was used up and old. So I bought a bag of container soil, and transferred the plant to its new pot. I was surprised to find out that there were about 8 plants, as I transferred them. Well, the next day, they were all droopy, and never recovered. Several months later, I finally pulled them out of the soil yesterday, cut all the brown leaves (no green left anyways), and stuck the root pieces in water. Still hoping for a miracle.
My peace lily is my most forgiving of all of my plants. It has grown enormously I've had to repot it every year, and it is now a floor plant. Humidity is very low in my apartment (in the winter it can get below 20%) and I forget to water it all the time. It can go weeks without water. I've also kept it in a spot that literally doesn't get sunlight at all. Despite all of this, it blooms every year and look very healthy. I have now moved it to a spot where it gets more light, so I am very courious to see what happens. Maybe it doesn't like it? We'll see.
My Peace Lily is doing great in my home. It's near the window and got 2 hours of sun light and the rest of the day still near the window. Now i have 6 flowers (in July) and flower almost all the year. I fertilize it with a balance fertilizer (10 10 10) 2 times a month (from March to September) and reported it every 2 years. Now it's really huge and so adorable. I'm living in Germany
My peace Lilly seems to be happiest with super infrequent water no matter where I put it. It’s in terra cotta and I maybe water it twice a month. It’s almost always bone dry. No idea what cultivar it is, but it goes against any peace lilly advice I’ve ever heard. Now that I finally stopped keeping it moist I’ve grown to really love it!
my spath is living in water. recovering from when I gave it stem rot back in summer🙃. yes. even you can give a peace lily stem rot with too much humidity.
How sweet! I bought my first Spath (Domino) at around the same time. Aren’t they great? Mine keeps getting new leaves. What light exposure do you have yours in? Have you repotted yet? Edited for spelling
Thanks for the video! I have 2 peace lillies and they are beautiful plants. I personally don’t care about the blooms, I’m more about the foliage. I’ve had them for less than a month and they are already producing new growth 🌱! I have one that is very full and with no blooms and I have another one that isn’t as full and has 1 flower and they are both in a low to medium light situation
I got this plant during my sons funeral he passed from Sids and it’s driving me crazy not knowing how to care for this plant so thank you for this video💙
I love this plant!! I have four growing in my flat in Melbourne, Australia. The largest of them I have growing in a mix made of part orchid bark and peat. I was having big problems with gnats and I have found that this mix works for my large peace Lily I just have to water it more. I also give mine banana water which I make by soaking banana peels in water for a week.
I have somehow managed to keep a peace lily going for over 10 years, but right now it’s hanging on by a thread. I kept hearing that they are so easy to grow, but that hasn’t been the case for me. Mine rarely blooms, and I’ve gotten 2 flowers at a time at most. Right now, it looks awful, and I’m not sure what’s going on. I’ve moved it to different locations, and it’s just not happy. BUT, I’m going to take a look at the roots, and possibly add fresh soil, and definitely do some trimming. Thank you so much. This is the most helpful info I’ve been able to find.
My Peace Lily was a gift to my Mom on her last Mother's Day in 2008. It's now barely hanging on and it's heartbreaking. I thought putting it under grow lights would help since I have a very low light home due to patios, porches, etc. keeping the sun out. It has only bloomed twice in 13 years despite trying everything. I will follow the guidelines you've set and see if I can keep "Lizzy" going and revive her. Thanks!
I have two of these: Domino and... I'm not sure the other variety, but it can get large. A neighbor gave them to my mom prior to moving away about 15 years ago. They had a near-death experience during a move 3 years ago, and I've been nursing them back to health ever since. One thing I've noticed is if you want big growth, you need light. I have a grow light on both of mine and they have started to bloom for the first time since their accident! They used to be in 5+ gallon pots, and now they're in a 10in and an 8in. These plants want to keep going! (Edit: the near-death experience was a family friend putting them in full sun in Georgia in June.)
Just discovered this channel because I got my first spath plant. I love this content, you can tell Summer is oozing knowledge on the subject and everything is so well explained (with the most excellent diction). You have new fan and subscriber, I'm sure my plants will appreciate it!
I’ve had mine for years, it’s huge and gets north west sun all day. I Water it once a week maybe or I just wait until it starts to wilt. It blooms a lot.I love peace lilies. Had no idea they were related to philodendron, that’s probably why I love them. Easy and beautiful. In my area they have the negative of being the funeral plant.
I’m from Scotland 🏴 and I’ve got two spathes appear on my peace lily since November 🙌 It hasn’t bloomed since I bought mine in 2018 and it may not have done so until I placed mine next to my west facing window and grouped it amongst my other humidity loving plants!
Such an easy plant to grow. It basically tells me what it wants. 😂 I have it located under a small window in my enclosed breezeway here in Burbank. During the fall and winter months (which are short here) the Santa Ana winds and cold make things super dry here. I set out my humidifier during the day and all my plants seem to thrive.
@@summerrayneoakes7338 the first one I killed I thought it was the common death of many house plants... over watering. The second two I believe its inconsistent watering. The one I have now is mostly dead, but has new growth.
Me too. I did move the location for saveral time in every place of my house but still not work out. It keeps grow new leaf but small and brown at the tip
@@FaviansWorld A good rule for these is when the leaves droop, water it until the water runs through. The plant tells you when it needs water. Overwatering causes root rot and brown tips along with high fertilizers. Watering it less won't damage it like most aroids
This video was beyond helpful. Im a new plant mom, and im on my second peace lily since Christmas Eve. This time around is better, but what lead me to this video was the fact that i realized my leaves are curling up. So now i know i have to spritz the leaves, or bring it in the bathroom when i shower to get more humidity.
I’m so glad I stumbled upon your channel. I love the way you explain important information about the plant and the do’s and don’ts when it comes to caring for your plant. Thank you so much for all your valuable information. I’m now a new subscriber!
I have two very large ones in a plastic decorative pot. Together they are 3 feet tall and almost 6 feet wide. They are 9 years old this year and came off my mothers original that was almost 16 years old when it died. Our house humidity is around 60% year round due to 6 large aquariums we have. They are in a south facing window with a growlight on a 12 hour timer. I keep the soil wet, a tray of constantly wet pebbles underneath and sphagnum moss covering the soil.
Excellent video...finally someone who gives the whole story. I finally learned that I can give my plant fertilizer once a month, January through August. Thanks very much.
Thank you! My spat has shot up 10 flowers this month of April. Love to peek into plant and try to locate the next flower. Planning on splitting it once the flowers fade.
0:42 Ah yes, I see the Philippines highlighted in the map. My peace lily just sprouted new leaves and they bring me a lot of joy. 6:26 Yes, heat is not that big of an issue. When they were given to me, the leaves were narrow and had black spots on the sides. I thought the plant was going to die. I have been keeping it outdoors and just leave it there no matter the weather. It gets a lot of sun and rain. Now, it is sprouting new, healthy, wide, beautiful leaves.
I don’t care if mine blooms but it has been looking paler and thinner recently. I just wanted to be luscious again. I think it’s gorgeous with or without blooms
Mine was gorgeous, and flowering. Moved apartment and it decided to start dying. But I think I've managed to get the growing conditions right again. It helps that spring is coming and it is getting more sunlight and warmth.
I have a peace lily from my nephew funeral i want keep it for as long as i can so far so good ive never had good LUCK with them thank ufor the info about them❤
My care is simple: right after I bought a Peace Lily pot with soil, I put half -> 3/4 pot into water inside another pot storing water & leave it like that. The plant loves much water without Clo2 so I use waste water from RO water. The plant is Super health this way with bright light+warm weather+humidity , however it sucks Water too fast so I need to add more water every 3 days (of course never put this plant under water completely). BTW my friends spiders help me take care of the plant by eating up fungus gnats, (no chemistry required).
I love this plant. My mother always keeps one in her living room, and it's always growing and shooting new leaves. Mine, however, never become so full. They shoot a new leaf and then almost automatically the oldest leaf turns yellow and dies. So it always has the same amount of leaves.
In my country we call them Wing Fowers and they're also in every house 😄 Edit: Woman's happiness, what a beautiful name! In my native language plants have usually really awful names
I had to tell my parents to move theirs out of their south facing window. It looked super sad and weirdly light green. It rebounded beautifully though, now that it's a bit further into the room
@@shasita3361 I think the only reason why mine are doing fine in a south window is because it's winter and they havent even experienced the summer sun yet. (I got them in November).
Hi. Is it important to keep artificial light away from my Peacelily? I use a plant light over a grouping of plants. I'm now problem solving. I switched from tap water to Spring water and from Miracle Grow to Dr. Earth organic soil. I have had my Peacelily for many years without issues. Recently my plant is in a constant state of drooping. I enjoy your videos.🌿☘🍀 Thank You!
Put my peace lily in an east facing window in the summer where it was getting 6hrs of direct light and it burned and died. Now my new peace lillies sits on the floor and it's thriving because it only gets indirect light. The thing I'm struggling with is yellowing leaves after watering. I'm using distilled water but I think I might just be letting it get too dry before watering (it's usually full droop limp when I do water) and the yellowing is due to stress.
I'm so glad to have found you, you are my go to plant girl for info. I just learning a little about plants but when it come to feeding, pruning, propagating or preparing substrate for the plants I'm just a disaster.
Thank you for valuable information Purchased one last year and I probably over over watered however because of your information Im going to give it another go also last year was my first real attempt at indoor plants I have recently had great success
Hi, I've been watching your videos lately, and I'm enjoying it so far...i just noticed that you haven't featured one of my favorite fern w/c is the foxtail, i like it because it's so soft to the touch...I'm from the Philippines & I haven't seen any of those here in the US...& i just want to say that most of the house plants here(that are so costly), just grow abundantly in the our country specially the snake plants & a number of plants that we only consider as weeds are so precious here...I'm not really a fan of house plants "before" since i come from a tropical country, so I'm more on landscaping my outdoor garden & I'm used to watering my plants 2times a day, so i struggled when i moved here to the US when i started having house plants where i have to reorient myself w/ plants that can thrive in the changing seasons & not to mention the variety of soil needed...well more power to you & looking forward to more interesting videos from you😊...oh & i more thing, you look like one of our local celebrity, her name is Asunta de Rossi😁
What a great, informative video. I have 1 peace lily, my first plant. I moved it from soil to water in a glass. It's in a north-facing window with a humidifier. It's finally growing one white flower! I'm shocked. But it may also have a fungal issue on one leaf. Is it possible that the change from soil to water caused an infection? I kept most of the roots.
Yep my bathroom got to cold last year so i almost lost it but it came back tull the spring and summer rained to mych but i found one at lowes i am nursering back it had new grow starting to come out so i am slowly taking the burnt ones as it grows i get a few more leaves the lady couple will come out
Have used peace lillies in larger planters as a moisture meter. Large expensive plant that need moisture dont always show lack of water till to late. A peace lilly in planter give quick indication of lack of water and bounce back quite readily. Saved expensive plant and still have attractive peace lilly . Even in another planter gives a good reminder to water in seasons where watering is less due to low light ie winter. Like you show. Finding alot of sites trying to explain the need for sponsers . I go with OK as long as you indicate they are sponsering you up front and up to viewer to use sound judgement. If I had sponsor unconcious bias could make me believe that a good product was a great product. Only a person with very low morels will promote a poor or bad product as great. In bad ole days actors would promote any product in front of them. But in the end they were actors doing a part. Gardening you tubers are presenting themselves as somewhat knowledgeable people in that field and not trying to be next oscar winner. I watch a number of sites and often see presenter show plant and say straight out they dont know why a particular plant they try and grow wont for them. I tend to trust people who say I dont know when they dont and when they do say this is what works for me. Not universally right but works for me here today now. Best of luck
Grabbed a Domino from the local grocery store...for the leaf appeal(LOVE!). She's flowering now. Lives in the Eastern facing bathroom -I feel confident about light value, temp may be an issue but the house stays around 65ish. I've been contemplating -should I cut the older leaves back in order to get more growth density...
Don't water too much. This plant can tolerate being too dry for a short time, but not being too wet. Water once a week, or whenever the soil feels dry.
My mom has asthma and I read somewhere that a peace lily has things that can help with that, as well as a good night's sleep and such, do you think that you could make a video about that?
I have a peace lily for a month now. It started blooming and getting new flowers. My only problem is that by the time the flowers fully bloom the spadix seems to get dark brown like necrotic. Could this be normal or could it be some kind of pathogen? Other than that it looks really nice and new healthy leaves grow regularly. Amazing video really informative and to the point about everything! Well done!
Got mine around 3 months ago with blooms. It re-bloom again for me, the only light it get is from a Dollard store plant lamp (I am in Canada and it's been winter for months and no sun Zone 0 to 4 ). Mine is a huge plant to. I guess Dollard store stuff work
This has been one of my favorite plants since I was a kid. I bought my first one when I was about 14yrs old. Now that one died when I left it at home my Senior year in college, but I have a new one now that came to me as a small division from a plant swap. Hey did anyone else think Summer was wearing a tiara when they first tuned in? I think that makes Summer the Queen of Spathes (pun intended). Happy Growing!
