Thank you so much for your help. This helped a lot. We recently got a baby turtle not by choice though. He some how wandered into our house and once we found him. We made him a temporary home and then got him the proper stuff he needs after a day or two

There is so much more to know about turtles that I thought. I just got a baby red eared slider and I feel like the list of things I need for him keeps growing. I need to get PH test strips and now a thermometer too.

Very helpful video. I do have a question: do I need to get uvb/a lighting for my turtle whose tank/basking platform is in a semi outdoor area (canopied)? I try to bring him out into direct sunlight (if I have the time) but he just keeps looking for shade and seems uncomfortable under the hot sun. I feel like he's not getting enough uva/b from where the tank is located but I cant be sure.

It couldn't hurt to add one, however my understanding is even under shade they're gaining more UVB than a bulb gives off in several hours!

I used to have all in one bulbs but I'm switching to separate UVA/UVB so I can control it more. How much watt should the UVB be for an adult yellowbellied slider, and for a hatchling Redbelly? They have their own private tanks and I'm getting bulbs for each turtle. :)

I have a question. I have 2 red eared sliders in a 20 gallon tank at the moment, one is about 4 in a half inches, and the other is about 3 in a half inches. Do you think this light bulb would be okay? Or do you think it would be too much?

I live by a lake and constantly have turtles on my porch, this time the cats in the neighborhood were bullying a super tiny red bellied turtle. Decided to keep it, I had a big snapping turtle like 6 years ago. I enjoyed him, once he got too big I released him into that lake

Excellent video. I have a Russian/horsefield tortoise that lives indoors (I’m from the UK so the tortoise doesn’t get a lot of time outdoors). I’ve bought an all-in-one lamp for his new tortoise table house. This video was very helpful!

Bro if you live the the UK you should have a good summer so living in the UK is no excuse not to take the little guy out bro. Mine is out everytime it's warm. But you must watch birds and other things trying to grab him

Hi there! I usually keep them on from sun up to sun down, whenever that is with daylight savings taken into consideration! Right now it's from around 8am to 7pm 😊

Hardwood is best, avoid softwoods like pine!

Im putting a timer switch on a small UVA UVB light and a plant feeding light so every morning when I gotta wake up for work before my alarm goes off my bed will be lit up from above by the auto on of my UVA UVB light and plant feed light for a hopefully optimal start to the working days! I'll have it run for 1 hour from 4 am on Mondays to Fridays!

I have made my own tortoise table for my boy but am not sure how many lights to give him. It is a big area. Will 1 uvb and 1 uva be enough or should I get more. I bought a arcadia proT5 but it seems small for the area.

I have 25 watt daylight basking and it cheap and it heat my tortoise is a baby and it's UVA now it started eating and their behaviour started changes they act more active then before

Here's another tip to mention: Never touch your bulb with your fingers. Your skins has different oils on it, even when clean, which get deposited on the surface of the bulb which causes concentrated heat spots on the bulbs when they run, causing your bulb to burn out and break way quicker. Always handle your bulb with a fresh pair of latex or nitrile gloves. If you do touch the bulb and leave grease marks, you can clean it with rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth.

All bulbs are NOT slash proof. Try to get a metal screen between the light and the basking area so in case it breaks nothing will harm your creatures. However, unless you keep your bulb extremely close to the basking area ( which you shouldnt, i would say a 50 watt bulb should be 6-8 inches away from the area), i really dont see it happening

I have the same lamp as you but the past few years this bulb has stopped working within a month. They are pricey at close to 100 where I live. Are you having the same issue recently or recommend an alternative? I tried a different bulb in my lamp and it has been fine but prefer an all in one bulb.

UVa does not produce heat. Heat for basking is via irradiation by a tungsten halogen lamp. It is called Infra-red A, or IRa.

Hi Dan, would fancy LED aquarium lights to grow plants hurt the turtle’s eye? It has white, blue, red and green LEDs. (I already have separate UVA and UVB lights for the turtle). Thanks in advance!

Hello if the light that is coming from the strip is not a white either warm or cool and instead a color, It could very well hurt the turtles eyes and it’s sleep cycle they are similar to us humans in where we have a rhythm and if we get to much blue light during the afternoon it harms our sleep. So it may cause irritation in the eyes but what would really worry me it the sleep cycle, but the damage will not happen after just a bit of having them so don’t worry if you just switch them out for a more natural alternative like a type of white it will be problem solved. Anyways that’s just my two cents ☺️

You can use any lamp you want, but the bulb has to fit the wattage recommendation of the lamp used and UVB bulbs are expensive, it just be like that 😂

So am new what lamp do I use for sulcata tortoise also sites say 50.walts other say 100 walts what will u suggest I don't know the lamp to get with it I was Finna get like two in one it comes with 5 to 10.walt uvb but I search UT up it ain't enough so I don't think I am Finna get it plus I did get lamp but it seemed to be wrong lamp it over heated and it sounded like burning so idk if it just some bulbs are to strong or what I need help

Hi, i cant buy an UVA/UVB cause of lockdown. I got sunlight out here, but the temperature ranges from 95 to 104. is that fine/harmful for tortoises? If its fine, then how long should i leave it out for?

Do you know if i can use the exo terra solar glo 125w in a water tank for water turtles¿¿ I red in the instructions that "this is not a lamp for aquariums and shouldnt be used in any type of aquarium" but in the pet shop they said that i can use it and now im confused, help me plesae! i dont understand if the water tank for turtles is considered aquarium or terarium and if i can use it Reply

I'd recommend finding a breeder if you can, search Craigslist or a local reptile expo. Other than that The Turtle Source is really reliable, they're just a hair expensive

no, uvb and heat are 2 separate things.....you need to keep both on

What about enclosure that is already warm enough even without basking light? If I put that light, it will exceed the recommend temperature for sure.

use a thermo gun to check. it needs a basking light in its basking area, it can escape the heat by going into water. the water should be alot cooler than the basking area

Hey trying to figure out why my turtle uvb light burning out fast. I just brought new lamps and light notice the uvb light went out in one day. I called the place I brought it from they will send out another but I don't think theses uvb lights been lasting 6 months. Any suggestions? I tried another light in the lamp where the uvb light was in and it worked. So I ruled out the lamp

Interesting...it could be a faulty light if it's not from a reputable company. Also if you handle it with bare hands do so as minimally as possible, oils from our skin can rub off onto the light. Otherwise not too sure, sounds like a faulty bulb!

I have a baby turtle, the pet shop owner told me that he has 1 volt uva and uvb up to 36 volt, and he told me I have to go outside of the room because it causes skin cancer, is the lights that dangerous?

I have a vivarium for my tortoise I know there not the best choice but I've put a hole in the roof then put wire mess on it so the lamp and bulb shine through. I am keeping the temperature right but the bulbs just keep blowing. My tortoise now is the size of an adult palm and has grown lovely but these bulbs I'm using at 75 what keep blowing even tho I use the right lamp that says 75 watt and I've tried different lights and they blow. Does the wire mesh cause this even tho the bulb is not touching. Also if I get that bulb you have the bulb that says 160 is that to powerful for my tortoise is he's a foot down from the top and sits on his slate I'm worried it may burn him. Please can you get back to me as I'm struggling with the lighting.

My best suggestion would be get a temperature gun (infrared) from Amazon, that way it doesn't matter what wattage bulb you have as long as its less than the maximum watts listed on the lamp, otherwise its just a matter of getting the temperature within the proper range!

Just get it as soon as possible, they need it for their shell to grow healthy but if you need to wait a few days to pick one up don’t stress out too much
