I watch a lot of Matt's videos -- he's made it up sand chute many times in one go. The day it took all day the sand was super hot and super dry and very deep powder sugar sand. This video had cool and rain on the day there. Matt could do it in two wheel drive under those conditions. Not that your truck isn't cool, but it's apples to oranges. edit: I'm only saying this so people who don't know who Matt know that was not typical for him. #mattsoffroadrecovery

Just sticking up for Matt for the other commenters who don't know him. :) I do not do offroad; I just enjoy watching the talent and the vehicles that are able to do such amazing things. Considering how they basically built and designed it on the fly, it's very impressive that it can do the things it can, especially compared to vehicles engineered and designed by multi-billion dollar companies. It's really a marvel in itself! Actually, if you watch Matt's video the wrecker was digging up wet sand, can even see the wet sand on the Banana at 10:51 or so in this video. I like Matt but the Patagonia tires he worships are way too stiff for a vehicle like the Banana and Morrvaire. Both of which are all really heavy (the Banana is over 6000 lbs), and he doesnt air down enough (one weakness of his tires since they are so stiff he is afraid to go below 8psi). All things that ruin performance in the sand. My old 67 CJ5 with a V6 in it, 33's at 2psi that weighs in at 2000 lbs would absolutely destroy this hill, might even be able to do it in 2WD.

I didn't know how you can fly a drone and not lose your lunch every 5 minutes!! That was next level, and all for some great content! Additionally, the people who spoke on Matt's behalf just have a lot of respect for them. They are a good wholesome, family oriented channel. They do a lot more than just rescue vehicles only a select few can rescue. Therefore we want them to get the props (and subs) they deserve for being who they are. We'd hate for someone to watch your guys' video, again, awesome as this was to watch! (Truly) and turn away from MORR because they think he's below par. That's all, no accusations of malice. Man I appreciate the comment and compliment. We have never been off-roading in Hurricane and are huge fans of MORR. Salt of the earth people every last one of them. We weren’t trying to make this any sort of competition, we literally just wanted to try it. The camera we had mounted down low shows the dry powdery sand. I am absolutely dumbfounded how so many people were so genuinely angry about this video. Still don’t understand it. We said nothing disparaging about Matt or his team or his rigs. I totally understand my vehicle is so different from his and so were the conditions from when he did it. His rigs could out do ours on any other surface hands down and we said as much in the vid. It was super fun for sure. We recently spent 2 days filming in the huge dunes in Idaho so future vids will show this thing climbing sand dunes much larger than this. It IS a beast! Thanks again!

It's been a while, but I believe that Matts New Vehicle wasn't quite done, didn't have some gearing or locking it would have later, and also it had new tires, which suck in the sand because they like to dig more than go. The other guys Bronco went right up which surprised the hell out of me but also made sense. Relatively light compared to the tow rig, and capable of holding momentum over sand. One of the biggest issues, was that they sent up the vehicle that would destroy that road FIRST, so all the vehicles that went later had to basically breach these giant freshly turned holes, which even filled were sand traps. It was a perfect storm of difficulty and sketch decision making. I believe the Tow Rig would probably do better today with it's current configuration, but it's biggest deficit there is weight. It has plenty of power, but even with large tires (hopefully much balder now), its just a heavy beast to float on a grade. The Raptor did well. Kudo's for the unbridled courage to try it in the evening.

So nice to finally see someone air down enough in a YT video. Those tires were squatting the right amount for sand. I hope Matt sees this and realizes he hasnt aired down enough in any of the videos I've seen, and I've seen all of them for a few years now. Those Patagonia tires Matt worships are way stiffer then the BFG's on this Raptor and need even less air. I ran 2psi in the 33's on my old 67 CJ5, which topped the scales at a mere 2000 lbs and I've been up worse sand hills than this with little effort, or in 2WD when the sand isn't super dry.

Love the CJ5 - yours's sounds great. I had a J-10 pickup on 33's back in the day (80-88) and loved it. Always got stuck in deeper than the Fords/Chevy's/Doidge's. All things said - I love my 35" Patagonia M/T (Gen 1) tires on my 2012 JKU. I air them down to 4-5 psi in the sand and snow, and have never had any problems. Never had one slip my factory rims, and they flex like crazy. Great tire for the terrain out west...

Glad you made it. but the sand is wet and made it a lot easier for your truck. The color of the sand shows how wet it is under dark skies. The sand when hot and dry robs tons of power from vehicles. I'm an avid sand dunner and grew up with hill shooting sand dune trails and tall sand dunes. Others may not know their vehicles and should not try this like you have. The best tires besides paddle tires are low pressure balding or bald tires to maintain full float. You don't want an aggressive mud tire that will dig down. I also drive a 2006 Dodge 4x4 with lots of power, while doing a muddy hill climb, while following a fellow friend, my truck shut itself off cause I was hitting a limiter that I didn't know it had. I thought that I had blown it up while having fun. I know that it would shut my truck off trying to climb this hill. I also own modded raptor and a sand rail, those run paddles since their light

Some years back we did some testing of airing down on Jeeps and mini trucks. We found that when we went below 10 psi the contact patch got worse, it maxed at around 10. What happens is that the center part of the tire folds upwards when you get too low. The ideal case is when the pattern is flat. Try it in flat soft sand and see for yourself. Will vary with vehicle weight etc.

Plenty of factors to compare, like sand temperature / wetness level + vehicle weight etc. But honestly the biggest flex for Matt is that he went up there with a cool truck that he built himself from scratch. And not to take anything away from that beast of a Raptor, but the conditions looked worse to me on Matt's video. The sand that day was a lot deeper. Jefe's Bronco made it all the way out, all the others had to be pulled out, the sand was dry and powdery. Did I hear you say it was raining? I think it you would have been down there with Matt and them on that day you would have been pulled out. Also the wrecker had problems with the lockers and had to come back the next day and fix it.
