Really appreciated the recognition/acknowledgment that not everyone has access to REI. They don’t ship to Australia and will only ship a bunch of brands within the US. I think it’d be cool to see more reviews from products not from North America in general. Love that Decathlon gets constant mentions. Backpacking does manage to happen with amazing gear and companies not from NA…

you can get great gear off of Amazon and local Craig's list. invest in a quality pack/sleeping pad and as long as you are summer/fall backpacking, you can get a budget down sleeping bag and tent on Amazon. waterproof the tent with atsko from Walmart. add a Sawyer filter and you are ready to go. you can cold soak or buy a cook kit. cheap on Amazon as well.

It always makes me chuckle how much Justin loves gear, then tosses all of it on the ground like "whatever"! You can hear the titanium spoon clanking on something lol. I loved this video Justin and you make some good points. I was thinking a lot lately about the moniker "Ultralight" and how people get so caught up over a pound. I rather enjoy my time than fit into a category. My base weight is ultralight, but I decided to start adding some luxury items in and the chair seems like a great idea.

The only reason I'm splurging on some seriously ultralight gear is so I can bring comfort items without pushing the pack even heavier. If i can save one pound shaving off weight of say 5-6 items, then a 1.2 lb comfort item, like a chair, or a real pillow doesn't sound as bad to add. lol

Great Video! When I'm backpacking, my ultimate piece of comfort gear is a notepad. I enjoy playing games like hangman, taking notes, and making sketches during hikes. I use the notepad for both practical and recreational purposes. While I’m open to trying new products, I currently use Rocketbook Mini for several reasons. First, it’s lightweight, weighing only 80g, and has waterproof pages. Second, I can easily scan notes to my phone, then erase them with a damp cloth, ensuring I never run out of pages while on my trip. Third, the cover that serves as a flat writing surface, can also be used as a windscreen. As a bonus, the pages can even be used to start a fire in an emergency, although they smell ghastly. I'm not sure if there's a superior product out there, but I’m quite happy with it so far.

i have the same issue a lot of the time. REI has "garage sale" items, all used gear and i have found some really amazing gear there for cheap. I have also gone on day hikes and just asked people I came across if they distance hike, and told them if they want to sell gear they're upgrading/have upgraded from, to give me a call. hikers are a cool community. sometimes I get great stuff and they refuse to TAKE my money. so just search around, reach out. and also got a great tip from Homemade Wanderlust to just save up over time, buying the most basic stuff (water filters, pack, etc) first, then going on longer trips as your gear list permits. it's been a year or two and i starting to get a pretty damned good set of gear together! plus the added benefit of learning backpacking "the hard way" for only one or two uncomfortable nights instead of a week hahaha. you'll get there!

Hi Justin, fantastic video and I don't think people appreciate how much more enjoyable hiking and wild camping is with a few of these comforts. I use the helinox chair zero (which is great when you take a break), and thermarest chair for sitting easily in the tent, and coupled with the little table just makes everything so much fun. As you say, if you have a very comfortable fitting backpack then a heavier load is not an issue, and the Hoka trail shoes I use for running and they just make you feel like you are walking on air. Nice to see some products we can actually get here in Scotland! Keep up the great work my friend, terrific!

Love this approach, usually videos are either for car camping which is waaaay too heavy or ultralight which is pure torture. When I camp, I usually park at a camping ground and then leave on kayak to reach a more back country spot where I can fish from. Having a kayak mean I can bring way more weight than a backpacker, but way less than a car camper.

Have you ever tried a hammock? It was a total game changer for me in terms of comfort. I got a custom Dream Hammock specifically tailored for a side sleeper with my weight and dimensions and I never want to wake up. It is a bit heavier (even with a DCF tarp) and takes longer to set up but, in my mind it's totally worth it. I have a pretty sweet tent set up but if there are plenty of trees, I'll choose the hammock every single time. Plus you can set up in a lot of diverse, out of the way locations.

If you buy a sit pad and bring a piece of nylon strapping with you, you can make an ultralight version of a camp chair and it’s still very comfortable. You tie bowlin knots at each end of the straps for your feet and have the strapping reach chest height while you’re standing with each foot in the bowlin loops. Then you can sit down with the webbing flat against the middle of your shoulder blades and lean back while sitting on the pad. Boom.

Cascade Wild folding "table." I got one and used it on a hike in Linville Gorge, NC. Nice lightweight accessory that fits in an outside pack pocket with a smart Water bottle. I like the features of the Gregory but as aFlash 45 and Flash 55 lover, will stick with REI.

Thanks for posting this video. Nice to have some comfort to make a trip that much better. I notice when you talk about packs you mention the men’s versions of them, for obvious reasons. I wonder, for those that don’t know product lines very well, if you could also mention the women’s version (name) of each pack you discuss. Might make it a bit easier for the women out there who follow you but are not familiar with pack product lines or that there are differences in pack ergonomics between packs for each gender.

When I was young a 50 pound pack was nothing , today a base weight of 8 pounds feels a lot better. I'm 78 and have been going UL for the last 20 or so years. Never , Never will go back to a heavy pack. I'm just as comfortable today , even a shade more comfortable then when I was younger. I don't feel like a pack mule at the end of the day. My Jungle hammock doubles as my chair , lounger , bed and camp comfort. I like my gear to do double duty or even triple duty when possible. It eliminates a lot of extra items. That's what keeps life interesting , everyone has different ways of doing things. It offers a wealth of information a person can learn from

I am with you. I am 63 and my big three are all Zpacks. The set up he is using is for people hiking a few miles a day. I do a lot of long distance hiking and I rarely see anyone carrying chairs. I think only one time. We are packing for hiking and he is teaching them to pack for camp. It’s all good just not for me anymore, that ship has sailed. Take care

Hey Justin, I am new to backpacking and backcountry camping. And you raised a very good point that I hadn't thought of: raising a tent in the rain. I bought the Big Agnes Blacktail - so far I love it, and so far camped without rain. Any suggestions on raising a tent like this in the rain?

If the footprint includes grommets for the poles, then you can set up the tent fly-first using the footprint, poles, and fly - then attached the inner from the inside. If you can't do a fly-first pitch, then I recommend bringing a tarp on trips where you expect a lot of rain. Set up the tarp first and then set up the tent under it. With freestanding tents, you can set up your tent without staking it down and then move it to your tent site; this way, multiple people can use the tarp to set up their tent sheltered from the rain.

Tested in moderate rain and wind but I want to get it out in more extreme conditions. No issues with condensation dripping down from the relatively flat ceiling.

I’ve only ever had a Gregory bag (taken mine on over 5-600 miles) and they are great bags. I get they aren’t too lightweight in some cases but especially for new backpackers they are great bags to begin with abs they are incredibly durable like seriously. I have the paragon 58

Wow you packed a lot of information in there. Thanks for that. I'm in my 70s and comfort is very important to me as my body doesn't need much for it to complain about. Ultra light is for the younger testosterone enhanced individuals who can't afford expensive sports cars. My luxury item is a 5Litre Sea to Summit kitchen sink with which I put warm to hot water to bathe with after a long day. To me there's nothing worse than feeling sweaty and grimy in my sleeping bag. It certainly adds to my creature comfort on the track.

Nice video! Gonna look into some of these options for the summer. I'm a bit like you. Lightweight is all great but for a few extra kg's it's totally worth the little big luxury. I also have the small chair and people laugh at me when they see I have one but once we get the tent pitched now who's laughing. Where do you recommend getting one of those waterproof stuff sacks for the chairs ? I pack my chair on the outside and I am weary of it getting soaked one trip.

Hi Justin, is there a video out for the hammock gear quilt you mentioned? I’m having trouble deciding if I should get that or just go for the EE Revelation. Likewise, is there any reason to use the Gregory Paragon over the Focal? The focal is a whole pound lighter and seems like a pretty nice pack. Thanks for the great content, glad to hear you’re doing this full time but you’re taking care not to let it mess with your love of the outdoors.

I will be at some point, but it may not be super soon. I want to get it out in some more extreme weather as I think that could be it's weak point. I had it out in moderate rain and wind with no problems but want to test it in a full on storm.

Wow that tent looks quite small for a 3p! Looks like it's about 5 inches wider if that than the durston 2p! Any reason you'd take that over the xmid 2p, considering its pack size and weight difference? Also in my experience i find the new tensor to be more comfortable than my STS etherlight! the R rating on the STS seems to be estimated on the very high end! Keep these awesome videos comin, love em!

The tent is probably ~ 10-12 inches wider than the x-mid. The x-mid doesn't have any extra room when I put two wide pads in it, where the Telos 3P still has some decent room on either side. Bathtub floors can be deceiving on video! I love the X-Mid but want to give people some options since it is VERY difficult to get an x-mid. It will be much easier to recommend the X-Mid when you can actually buy one. The Ether Light XT sleeps cold in the real world for sure, but it's r-value is tested the same was as the Tensor - using the ASTM standard.

The tough part is that there isn't a great option for a tent that is big, light, AND affordable. You kind of have to pick two. The X-Mid 2P is a pretty good option, but then you run into the issue of availability...

Maybe look into the Kelty. They have a dome style Ashcroft and Element under that weight, and it is routinely on sale for under $100 US. They’re a basic dome style, so pretty slanted walls. I have a similar designed, similar material, car camping tent that has held up well for occasional use. Also, maybe the Big Agnes Blacktail. Adds a 2nd door and vestibule, and bent main poles with a cross pole for more headroom. I see it on sale around the holidays for about $150 US which is about 40% off normal retail.

My bag is 65 litres and weighs 1.9KG but I've taken out the metal support poles because they are totally unnecessary so it will be closer to 1.2KG. It cost £40 / $50 dollars. The amount of expensive camping gear people use is insane. I advise anyone who watches this video, please don't spend $200+ dollars on a bag.

Any idea what your loaded pack weight is , including food and all ?

Base weight is around 12-15lbs. Add 2.2lbs per liter of water and 2lbs per day of food.

It’s kinda crazy, but I outfit for up to 6 friends on our big trips. Between the box of baggies filled with meds, toothpaste tabs, powdered camp soap, powdered milk and butter, Himalayan sea salt, sugar for coffee, fish fry, brown sugar (for fish prep), and so many other little baggies filled with white and brown powders and pills I’m amazed we haven’t been questioned yet at airport security. I feel it necessary to sharpie the name of each item for that reason, but I always imagine like 4 agents in the back taste testing each one of our little baggies 🤣

@@toemke I've done some research into it and people seem to be liking the Gregory more. Big gripes with the compression straps on the exos going over the water bottle pockets and small hipbelt pockets.
