The way that Shaggy tells the tale, with the new context of how he got his powers, it makes Shaggy appear like he chose to sacrifice his friends instead of accidentally losing them in a botched ritual. Shaggy could have told the truth, but instead lied to make himself seem that much more reprehensible. I think, deep down, Shaggy acts like an asshole who challenges everyone because he WANTS to die, as penance for his actions, and keeps seeking someone who is strong enough to finally end him. And that is truly tragic.
