This is my review of the Kino Lorber release of ULZANA’S RAID (1972). A very problematic old Universal master was used which is the same previously released in Germany.
In spite of this at least the film is now widely available in widescreen with two fantastic new extras. Hopefully Universal will restore this powerful film in 4K at some point and a true special edition can be released with both cuts of the film.

I must’ve accidentally toggled the ESP switch.😂 That is uncanny. I hemmed and hawed for a while but the extras+Kino sales convinced me. It seems to be the exact same as the German BD but without the pal dvd of the Lancaster cut. The new extras are worthwhile but brace yourself for a very crummy master.

I watched this film on a local serbian tv station called Pink Western last year. It was a great watch and I would love to see it again. Keep up the good work! You deserve more subscribers!

Thanks for the reviews! This definitely sounds good! Robert Aldrich's films seems to have more of a raw look in what he shows in his films.

Thank you! Indeed Aldrich has a raw look and feel in his body of work-here it is perhaps at its most raw. That’s why I think it’s such a winning combination of director and material.

Burt Lancaster had guts, " Valdez is coming " is my favorite.

As far as 1970s westerns, this is one of the best, and also one of the most interesting of Westerns to be influenced in some way or another by THE SEARCHERS (a movie that Robert Aldrich wasn't a fan of). My favorite 1970s westerns are PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID, and MCCABE & MRS. MILLER. I also like THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES.

Sweet! Love your recent western reviews. I just ordered Vera Cruz so cant wait for that one! PS, have you read any Cormac McCarthy and his westerns? Amazing literature. Blood Meridian and The Crossing are my favs!

Don't sugar coat it, Spencer--tell us what you really think...😀 After that review, how can I not see it? As always I bow to your technical expertise, but the screen caps you put up actually look pretty good. Then again I'm old enough to remember having to watch this stuff on local TV with murky panned and scanned prints sandwiched in between endless commercials for used cars, so to me "pretty good" means there's not a big gash running thru the middle of the frame...

That’s why I did more screencaps than I usually do. It’s a very old crummy master but at least it’s properly widescreen and you can enjoy the film.

It’s been too obscure for too long. It took me ages to see and then it was stuck in an old 4:3 master without dvd for years. Night Moves is incredible. The Warner archive disc is a stunner.

Never seen this movie. I am curious about this movie. Living in the UK I have the Lancaster Cut.

Oh cool! I’m not sure what UK releases exist. I’d guess some pal versions of the Lancaster cut. This is a title that seems like a prime choice for Arrow or Indicator. Just be prepared: this picture is completely dark in its tone.

I have the old pal dvd Which is In letterbox I need to get this on anamorphic wide-screen with the extras which one do you prefer this or Valdez is coming
