Roger Quarton Do these homes ever end up with bug and insect infestations?? How do they prevent it?
@ladythalia227
@ladythalia227 6 лет назад
Yes. When it comes mountain cabins a grass roof is practically mandatory 😂
@ladythalia227
@ladythalia227 6 лет назад
@@majormediaproductions No, of course not, then we wouldn't still have them on our mountain cabins. Nowadays we use modern materials underneath the grass to keep it completely dry. In the old days they would use tree bark underneath the soil and grass. The grass roots will soak up the moisture and the bark (or whatever people use nowadays will take care of the rest before it permeates the roof. The bark would have needed to be changed every 20 years or so and the soil and grass removed and replanted afterwards. No moisture inside = no bugs or infestations. I actually helped build my own mountain cabin 20 years ago and the man building it had learned the old techniques from his father and grandfather going back to the 1800's. He told me how it used to be. Ot was actually quite interesting to see the log cabin being made from scratch in the old way. (With a couple of modifications.)

These are really unusual homes. Love the grass roofed ones and the one you have to be a member to get to. Love the terrain on the member one. Personally I would choose to live in NH on Lake Wiinne or Squam Lake. They build houses on islands there and the water level doesn’t change so they can build and have built right on the water’s edge. They drive across the lake when frozen and boat when thawed. GORGEOUS!!!!!

I bought this because I did not have a clue about the design, materials composition and building of a shed. ru-vid.comUgkxb2mhCug-GkCWrq69Ce2I0nM0D4QpxAquIt is absolutely fascinating, with clear, readable text and helpful illustrations also enough videos. There is a great sense of creativity and enthusiasm underlying the projects which the authors develop, from a bike shed to a glorious eco-shed. I like the way explanations are provided for decisions made from a range of options. I am not really in a position to rate the more technical detail, but think I am prepared to boldly go shed- building, equipped with this manual.

1:26 How can you have a segment about this famous house and not state its name? It's called Fallingwater. What you don't say is that the owner asked for a house with views of the waterfall, but Wright, going against those instructions, built it *over* that waterfall. Unsurprisingly, damp was a problem and the owners always had to have buckets about the place to catch the... falling water.

The second house in Serbia on river Drina was built by group of swimmers that needed a place to stay and enjoy the water. Back in that time they brought all material by small boats and it took a lot of time to build it. That river is very fast and it was really hard job to do. :) They made all those houses coz they are creative people with unique style, and thats something that lots of people appreciate and admire.

Hey there I can explain why they carved their homes inside the rocks in Tatawine. It's because it's very cool in the summer and warm in winter. At first, those houses were built to store food (dates, toasted wheat, red pepper,....). It's not a permanent home as each family had a house in the village and a storehouse on the mountain near the village. But after discovering its coolness in summer they also used it as a shelter from the hottest desert's middays.

Number 22 is wrong. That is on the the susquehanna river in the susquehanna valley in PA. I've driven past it. Before the house was built, children would come on boats across the river from the town of Marietta to swim in the waterfall and its pond below. When the house was built, they had to stop.

yeah. My great grandfather lived in that town all his life. He used to go there was a kid. The funny thing is he is in a book about the town where he talks all about it. Its a limited run from a couple years ago that's over 1100 pages that goes through everything from notable members to presidential visits to crimes and even the town hauntings(but they didn't cover all. that town has to be one of the most haunted in the state. A friend who lives there heard a guitar playing in her room. Her dad grabbed his shotgun and slowly went up and checked. No one was there. My little cousin would see a union soldier in her house as a kid. she knew things that she should have not known. There is a supposed picture of an angel on top of a bar, a Bed and breakfast has multiple haunts. don't even get me started about the creepy ass forest. Across the river near the falls, a massive house that is at least 150 years old is haunted by the spirits of two teens. The boy murdered the girl when she rejected him and he was hung on the property. My grandmother and one of my aunts saw a man in a tophat walk through the door, I mean THROUGH the door, like through the wood, into the ladies bathroom at one of the towns bars. I didn't even get to the extinct species of bigfoot up here called that have been sighted by native americans for centuries, the multiple romeo and juliet stories, indian killings, the caped man(which I saw before). It's a creepy and old town. over 200 years old if i remember correctly.
@zacharyp10
@zacharyp10 6 лет назад
Wow, that's wild! Thanks for the response, very interesting! My dad lived in Massachusetts and apparently, there was a lot of scary stuff going on in the woods there. He saw indians a lot apparently. I laughed at "don't even get me started on the creepy ass forest" lmao
@iamnotaweebiswear8940
@iamnotaweebiswear8940 6 лет назад
From Virgina/West Virginia and up seems like its all just a paranormal hotspot. There is the old house woods in Virginia which is supposed to be the craziest haunted forest in the world(I am talking about flying pirate ships, headless dogs, glowing orbs, buried treasure, phantom british armies, skeletons looking for treasure, screaming. Everything you can think of). Gettysburg, Marietta, and basically the entirety of PA, Mass has a bunch of hauntings as well. All the supposed sightings of weird ass creatures in the mountains. It's just crazy how much of this stuff there is in this area. I think PA and the virginias are the biggest hotbeds though.
@skagited9617
@skagited9617 6 лет назад
Friend... Sorry, not sure if you got the number of the house wrong.... but #22 is definitely not near Marietta. Wikipedia and Google Maps show it about 13 miles due east of Uniontown in SW Penn. Densely surrounded by forest, on a tributary to the Youghiogheny River.

It's a cool location. We live about an hour south from the location (a boat trip to Boldt Castle takes you past it on a tour. On the day we passed this house, there was a little lawn chair next to the front door.. Incidentally, there is no tide on the St. Lawrence River.. it is AT LEAST 400 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, so tides do not affect it. There are a bunch of small islands (1 acre or less - to define the smaller ones) with singles houses, but this one is great!

My grandparents lived in a former small-town churchhouse they converted into a family home. My mom grew up in that house. They lived on an island where there were only 2 houses including the church and as water levels arouse the mainland farmers stopped using the island for farming fields and cow grassing. So no church goers left - no need for the little churchhouse. We've always had grass or straw roofs on Island and the nearby islands where I grew up. I never new it was that special as we also had those roofs in the places I lived in mainland Scandinavia. And I have grass roof on my house here in Norway now. I didn't know we used grass as a way of saving sparse building material either and its not everywhere here in this region, that has a history of using grass roofs, where wood and roof materials have been sparse.

I'm pretty sure the people living there now wouldn't like to be called demons... The Netherlands has seen a rapid dechristianisation, and now it's only 4% that strongly believe. The rest either is unsure if there even is a higher power, just plays along out of tradition, or is outright atheist (25% and rising). Immigrants will bring their religion with them, usually islam, but the new generations tend to not care about it more often then not.
