In part one we head out for some unbelievable spring fishing to catch shallow water Lake Trout on opening weekend right after the ice went out. We spend three days exploring Knife Lake and the Thunder Point area getting after some big lake trout!

Pretty cool that you captured a pike on video at 5:13.

100% luck! Actually didn’t notice when it happened-realized it when I first reviewed the footage! We saw him swimming around in the shallows after, but had no idea he swam right in front of the camera

They are a tricky species, for sure. It is always a good time when they’re cruising the shallows when the water is cool at the surface.

So stoked to see this come up this morning. Am taking my son on this same route on May 20 this year. Was hoping to run in to you at the store. Last year you helped us a bunch on a fall trip to Wind. Wasn’t sure what your spring tactics would be

Happy to oblige! It is a fantastic route! I’ll be in the woods for fishing opener again but might catch you on your way in. That early in the season I always look for the warmest water on the lake-south facing shorelines, shallower bays/areas, moving water, etc. Most of my May trips are a jig and minnow bite, which seems to be successful when the water is still cold. Trolling crankbaits at dark along shallow (6-12’) shoreline breaks is almost always productive, too

Me and my buddies are doing this same route Jun01-Jun10. We watched your video on your sonar setup and decided to replicate it. Super cool to see this video after we planned the trip. Any tips on targeting walleyes that time of year on Knife? Thanks!

Thanks for watching, Bubbles! I'm a huge fan of Trailer Park Boys, I love the profile pic. I've never fished Knife in June, but I am guessing the water will still be quite cold. I would look for the warmest water on the lake, just like we did this trip. Sunny shorelines, inlets/outlets with moving water, etc. Right around that time I start to troll crankbaits in the evening for big walleyes. If you can find leeches, I would bring a couple of dozen depending on group size, walleyes love leeches (or minnows if you're willing to haul them in). Likely, they will be hanging out relatively shallow still. I would start in 10-15' of water and work deeper if you aren't finding them. Keep looking...if a spot isn't producing, move on. Keep working until you find them and once you do, post up on the spot, there will always be more.

Enjoyed the video! You mentioned the Canadian side of Carp has some good trout fishing. I will be paddling through there on my way to the man chain this june. Any advice in that area? Thanks!

Thank you! I just watched your new launch and loved it, too. Your camera work is great - I could learn a lesson or two from your content - I just subscribed! I've only fished the Carp once, late fall 2019, but the fishing was fantastic. A true grand slam lake, with trophy fish of all four major species. The water was super cold when we went, so the fish were pretty shallow. I don't remember specific trends other than 1/4oz green jig with a 5" zman shad was my best bait - bounced off shallow structure, followed by trolling rapalas in the 20-30' range. I would assume Carp has a good population of ciscos, so I would try to imitate white/glow/chartreuse/purple/blue colors to start.

@@therealfarwater really appreciate it and thanks for the sub! I really enjoy your content and you catch some nice fish! I appreciate the tips on Carp. I will be there early June so it may just be a trolling pass for me on my way to Quetico but I always like to take a swing! Thanks again!

Would you explain what you were using for tackle? How you were fishing them? I saw minnow buckets…. Thanks, very interesting!
@therealfarwater

You’ll see in the next two videos that we had most of our success on the jig and sucker minnow bite. We spent a lot of time casting from shore and trolling crankbaits and spoons with mixed success. When the water is that cold nothing beats a jig and minnow slowly jigged across bottom or along rock ledges and drop offs

Hey FW! Thanks for posting the video. I'm up there in the BW's late May most years. Just can't beat the shallow trout bite. What are you running for a sonar system. I've been doing a thru-hull system for a few years and thinking of upgrading. Looks like a nice system that you have.

Yup! Tough species to catch from shore-early spring is generally the only time it’s possible with the super cold water
