This emotional work leads to individuation of the self, a release of childhood conditioning. It's taking responsibility for the self and forming a healthy ego. It's acknowledging that "I am responsible for my feelings and my life." For many, this work should be completed before exploring more advanced non-dual practices. I was originally interested in more advanced non-dual practices and I found the reason for my interest is that I thought meeting with the divine would lead to an escape from my feelings. But what I really needed was to face my feelings and learn to feel them deeply. It has been a long road, longer than I originally thought, to become deeply aware of the different aspects of my childhood personality. I take it day by day and stay consistent with a daily inner work practice.

The belief that an individual is responsible for the spiritual path they take is the razor-edge of the illusion. The you that believes is doing the work is really the one enjoying the ride of the context. Everyone is doing what they believe is right (and if they are trying to get away from their emotions, that is part of the dream too), while being led to acknowledge that which will be most beneficial to awakening. It is very common to try to escape emotions, while not realizing that is where one is headed to confront them again and again, until it is understood. It is like believing the individual in the dream is the dreamer, but it is not so. They are of the same origin (material) as the rest of the dream. Once that is realized, the true dreamer wakes up. He is refreshed and sleep is no longer needed to begin the day.

Can't express the gratitude I feel! Had a painful encounter yesterday that left me steeped in terror and confusion. Tried to sit with the fear but felt absolutely stuck, this continued in a cycle of fear and confusion and more fear. As soon as I followed your guidance I felt a spaciousness and clarity, this led to a feeling of love, understanding and healing. Your a real beacon of light...thank you David ❤

Love the combo of IFS and Focusing. Great to see these tools getting shared, and nice job with the clarity and letting people know how it's worked for you and the weak spots of many spiritual tools. Wondering if you've come across the book 'Buddhism Meets Psychotherapy On The Road To Liberation'? Really great exploration of the intersection of seeming contradictory approaches. Keep it up, David! 🙌

Naming the explicit feeling first is big, I've been discovering new labels that help guide me. I struggled to figure out what guilt really felt like, but after naming it, a process similar to the one you describe here happened, thoughts with discreey feeling tones that expand. I often find myself a bit confused about what happens afterwards though, I think i expect some huge relief to happen but so far it just feels like small "aha" moments

Pretty cool video. I completely agree with you about many of the non-duality speakers. I’ve been into non-duality for well over 20 years and did therapy for years as something separate. I’ve been working on myself for the last couple of years and have been doing IFS work for the last year. It’s really helping me in ways that self enquiry and meditation (with a sole focus on presence) ever have done for me. Due to severe PTSD I find it hard to feel emotions in the body, but I’m really starting to understand myself more and life now is much more rooted in presence than in ego. By letting parts have some breathing room life is so much lighter, and meditative states come more effortlessly. I think it’s the suppression of parts that makes meditation seem so difficult for many. I will definitely be trying to explore focusing and will order this book on it. Cheers.

Hi David. Thanks for your recommendation on the book "No Bad Parts". I just started listening to it (audiobook). Ive read Angelos Dilullos book and going through again. Ive done some of the practices fkr the oast few months. Srill havent had an initial awakening but your recent videos (the ones in the oar few months) have really spoken to me. I think i need ro work on my emotions (shadow work etc etc). Ive been a seeker since about 2005 (im 38 now) with other so called "spiritual" practices and they haven't done much at all for me to be honest. I think im going really dive deep into the "No Bad Parts " practice like youve mentioned and also do the "Non dual" (not sure if thats what i call it but im sure you know what I mean) practcies along with it. I heard you mention its like a "SuperDrug". Thanks again for your videos. Im really getting a lot out of no bad parts book and i just started it yesterday.

I write my feelings down as they come up for me after a traumatic experience earlier today: I feel deeply rejected and unworthy, I feel extremely unwanted and spat at, I feel like an animal that has been cast out of the group out of utter disgust and unworthiness. I feel hated and rejected, I feel like a piece of total dogshit. It was a nightmarish occurrence. I suppressed all these emotions until now.

That’s not you, it’s a part that feels like that. Maybe ask that part who feels so unworthy what it needs from you? How old is that part that feels like that? Where did he get his job? Is little you from years ago still there? Give that part of yourself love and compassion, move towards it in compassion

This is gold. Was a little skeptical when I listened to the video yesterday, but had to come back today to say it really works exactly like you say. I believe if you have a lot of blocked stuff then sitting with it and surrendering can still be a first step and then this afterwards, rather than a no-self focus.

PEAT method/therapy does just that with detail protocols. It's really amazing. IFS is also magic. I had been just feeling the screen emotion as in non-duality and although there were more light and consciousness on this reactive protection, I was going nowhere deep enough! Hi David, I just wanted to say thank you first of all. After watching this video I have been looking into IFS and actually starting to acknowledge and feel my emotions in a way I don't think I've ever done before in my life. I wanted to ask, how do you understand the concept of the true 'Self' as often described in IFS, coming from a non-dual perspective? I struggle with this a bit, as it seems true that there is no such thing as a 'true' self separate from or superior to the 'parts' and yet IFS therapy also seems immensely useful. Would love to hear your thoughts.

@ryanh71
@ryanh71 2 месяца назад
@@Davidmcdonald1 That's great! I didn't know John Vervaekes knew about Focusing. One of Gendlin's big projects was to understand/explain the creation of meaning, which is how Focusing got developed. John is interested in meaning so I can see how he'd know about Gendlin. By the way, Focusing is usually practiced in pairs or with a guide. Something about the interaction with a trained companion deepens it. If you're interested, I'm giving away free sessions at the moment. I'm certified and have a good amount of experience, but no pressure.

Valuable message, brother. I'm a big fan IFS work myself. As much as I agree with everything you said, there's something I'm currently exploring that could lend a slightly different perspective on some of this. Specifically, when some of our favorite nondual teachers say to only abide as awareness (or the like) and don't delve into anything more "sophisticated", they actually have a point that becomes obvious only after recognizing that our seeking to "unpack" and do emotional work comes from a (self-like) part. This "spiritual achiever"-part isn't quite as effective at bringing about healing as it might think. What I'm finding is that parts are capable of healing through "spontaneous unburdening" which is far more effective. This only happens when met by Self, which is agenda-less, it has no need or goal. In the absence of any pressure to change, our systems begin to self-organize and heal optimally - without any of our intervention. We simply abide in awareness, to bring it all back full circle. The trick is to notice when we're blended with a part that feels we have to do something about our pain - that it is not OK for it to be there. When we unblend, and the pain is allowed to just be, it starts to transmute by itself - but only when we no longer need it to. What a beautiful paradox if you ask me! Anyway, I'm curious to hear about your experience with this. Does any of this resonate?
@Davidmcdonald1
@Davidmcdonald1 2 месяца назад
I wouldn’t say the healing is done from “self” and I think we also forget the Buddha never thought annihilation of self, he thought there is no inherent self. We could say that about any desire right? The desire to wake up? The desire to spontaneously release parts? The desire to meditate? To realise no self? There’s no action, and never will be an action that is completely divorced from having an end in sight. The thing Is, abiding in awareness to bring all full circle doesn’t work I feel. The reason is, everything arises accept everything that doesn’t. There are unconscious processes, and bodily felt senses happening that you are not even aware of, that are not arising. This kind of work (at any stage) allows you to get beneath the surface and integrate from bottom to top.
@miloow
@miloow 2 месяца назад
@@Davidmcdonald1 The difference I was pointing to is that integration can happen from one of two places. Either facilitated by a part, driven by discomfort, fear, or lack which manifests as a need to "fix ourselves". The other spontaneously unfolds from Self (in IFS terms, not to be confused with the self you're referring to) without an agenda. What you're describing sounds indeed like having a goal in mind, or as you put it an end in sight. That's a great telltale sign you're speaking on behalf of a part.
@Davidmcdonald1
@Davidmcdonald1 2 месяца назад
@@miloow I dont believe there is such thing as any form of movement or action that does not have end in sight. Even in IFS, the goal of the self is to bring about transformation for all of the parts. Basically, what I am arguing is there is no such thing as "agendelessness." The whole universe is teleological in nature, all movements, acts and intentions are directed towards ends. I cannot think of any non agenda movements of mind.
@miloow
@miloow 2 месяца назад
@@Davidmcdonald1 Bingo! You said it in the last sentence brother. Presence is not of the mind. Presence or call it awareness, Being, Self, or what have you. Therein lies "the peace that passeth all understanding". It's beyond all understanding because it's beyond the mind. In that peace there's no push or pull towards or away from anything. No goal. No agenda.
