I have a big unit of these, they really are stunning and cost me a fortune (to get to Australia). But they taught me a valuable lesson. Size matters - they are just too damn small. They don't fit in with the rest of the collection at all. I didn't realise how much of a problem this was, and how much I was in love with 'heroic scale' 28mm minis until I got them. Even in their own unit they don't look quite right.

Empress figures are great and the poses are very dynamic, I agree that it’s wise to replace the lances with wire ones as white metal is too fragile👍🏻

I have some of the Russo-Japanese figures from Empress Miniatures, and they are equally beautiful. Thank you for the unboxing and review.

do you have to drill a hole through the hands

Interesting points - see what I did there? - about replacing the lances, though I initially thought that when you said ‘miniature bamboo’ you were advocating the use of very thin stalks of the actual grass. (On reflection I’m sure some enterprising gardener could find a way to provide us with authentic scale lances). All of the proposed alternatives have one problem, however, namely attaching the pennant. Using the originals would presumably entail drilling into them with a fine bit and inserting thin but stiff wire into both the pennant and lance-haft (if plastic or bamboo), a by no means easy task, if not impossible. This would not be feasible with steel wire, though possibly the much softer florist’s wire might allow it. Otherwise, making a pennant out of thin copper sheet or thickish paper would be required, though the former method has the advantage of allowing use of the cast lance head, which is less likely to cause injuries than naked steel. I may be overthinking this but I really don’t see a simple solution, unless one is prepared to wait for a plastic set of lancers with the correct pattern of lance, or commission someone to sculpt it in 3D.

I have belatedly realised that the idea of replacing the cast lances with bamboo ones is by no means as difficult as I originally assumed, and can readily be accomplished without recourse to gardening skills. The humble toothpick can be readily sanded down to the correct scale thickness, though incorporating the ‘ridges’ - properly termed nodes - in three-dimensional form may form something of a challenge.

An excellent idea, albeit one I would very much like to see demonstrated before attempting myself. At least toothpicks are cheap enough to make the inevitable failure rate tolerable, though I am less sure about the frustration that would be likely to result, at least in my own case. The alternative of representing the nodes with tiny amounts of Milliput or similar seems perhaps more practicable, albeit minimally so. It so happens I am presently awaiting the delivery of no less than five packs of said putty, some of which I may allocate to this daunting task. In the event I am successful, the purchase of the figures reviewed will of course be mandatory. YMMV.

On further reflection, this may be a rare example where the generally disappointing Liquid Greenstuff might prove its worth, being somewhat easier to apply in the small quantity required than its miscible parent product. I suggest it would be an enormous boon to the gaming community were all methods discussed be attempted in a future video.

That would be greatly appreciated. You, sir, are a credit to not only your channel, but, dare I say, your species.
