Pardon the question… did you receive through FedEx? I ordered the antique/black over 2 days ago and see no package movement in FedEx webpage. (I hate FedEx btw) And why does it tell me New shalimar exports ?? I thought it’s royal chess mall
Nice review. I had to buy this today, and a box. My Dad had a Lardy set when I was growing up, and this reminded me of his set. We will play with this new set when he visits!!
Btw my system froze when I used your link. I don’t think the link is bad just my computer. I went back in directly. I attributed my purchase to your review in a comment after purchase. Sorry about this.
Based on this Review - I have ordered a set for myself. Should be here in a few days from Royal Chess Mall. Thanks - you are right, a good French Lardy set is harder to find than you might think at first.
I have a 1974 version of the Lardy and this reproduction is spot on. The only difference I see is how the knight's eyes are done on the original vs this version. This is by far the best reproduction of the Lardy I have seen available. Nice job and thank you for the review.
Thanks for the comment! I'm glad you like it too. I agree there is always some room for improvement for sure, especially when it comes to replicating original knights. But overall, I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out, and I think it is good value for the money, the walnut tint looks amazing in person. :)
@@RandomChessTalk Yes, I agree with the results. Probably the closest reproduction I have seen to the 74 Olympiad pieces. It's built to play chess. Very functional and has style points that make it unique.
In my opinion there is still a major problem: The head of the knight is considerably thicker than it was originally. So you don't have the characteristic feeling, that you have when grabbing an original Lardy knight with its really thin head.
@@conjured_up_skeletons6178 My original Lardy set is also 3.9" K. So why should replica pieces be more beefy than the original pieces of the same size?
I think this set looks incredible, I have a couple of og Lardy's. I'm really really tempted to order these, just trying to work out whether to go walnut or black. I must say, while the knights are always wonderful in lardy sets, the bishops in this set are simply killer, so much nicer when slim rather than the stubbier versions we see more often In their sets. Thank's for the show. ⚘️
Love this. I like the King to be short and in sync with the other pieces. I think taller kings are fine for show but less practical for play, particularly blitz. The whole set looks very smart and balanced.
Thanks for the comment! Yes they really have mastered the stained finish here. Generally I think ebony is the best for the dark pieces but this brown stain and polished surface was beyond expectations 👌
Thanks for the comment. I agree with you, there are always some details which could be done better. But overall I think it is much better than the previous version and I'm pretty happy with it.
@@RandomChessTalk Yes, looking at it, it is almost a different type of chess set from Lardy but they have tried to inject some Lardy features into it. They could not make the knights correctly which could be because they used google photos for reproduction. Besides, I checked the price and it is as expensive as the original Lardy. In fact, I bought an original Lardy set a few months ago for half the price of this reproduction.
@@kevinwellwrought2024 without a doubt an original will always be better than a replica. Especially when it comes to the knight. Congratulations on your good purchase! I believe original Lardy may become more expensive during the time. Did you buy it on Etsy?
@@RandomChessTalk That is right, the original Lardy is much more beautiful than the replica. I bought mine from a charity shop. It is a weighted set with 3.75” king and mahagony stained. It is amazing. I believe original Lardy can also be found on internet for less than half the price of the replica but you may need some patience to find it.
but what you aren't realizing is that the original Lardy's often have warped pieces......the Kings and/or Queens have a lean to many of them. Yes, they are beautiful, but if you are getting originals then you are most likely getting pieces that are not straight and true. And I'm not sure where you are buying but if you are getting this size, you are getting a bargain with this set. The tournament size without the warp will run you hundreds more. @@kevinwellwrought2024
