Yeah you got it exactly right. I have a 5.5/1 I use for cranking and I love it but it is slow compared to everything else. When in doubt 7/1 gear ratio is the best all around but if you wanna really refine it you can go slower and faster.

The SLX mlg out performs my curado’s hands down. They throw small crank baits and jerkbaits like a dream

100%, if would be my top pick for throwing any lighter plastics.

If you remember let me know how it goes and how it compares. Always wanted to try a smoke but never got one.

Yep I definitely do. I haven’t used it a ton because I have like 10 baitcasters and live in MN where I can’t fish with them half of the year but it impressed the hell out of me when I used it.

I have two bass x rods and I would agree. I have a Daiwa coastal 150 and Daiwa coastal 200 on them, both are blue reels and look really good. I have a slx dc on a slx rod too.

I’ve really been wondering about a finess casting reel on like a UL or light power rod 🤔 I see kastking came out with a finess reel called the zephyr but I’ve never handled a kastking so I’m not sure on the quality. They’re popular though so I guess they’re doing something right 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’ve never used a Kastking either. Heard mixed reviews. SLX MGL is an excellent finesse baitcaster. I have mine on a Falcon Bucoo 7’ medium light rod right now. I love using it for small plastics and smaller jerkbaits.

I think it’s ideal. My 6.2 curado seems so slow now. If you wanna go slower you can always reel slower.

I usually go with the 7 ratios on most of my casters, but they have very low stock in this reel 7.2 hg currently haha so I was considering the other ratios… this reel I want to use mostly for slow finesse presentations and I was worried the 8.2 might be too fast and miss me some bites especially if I’m not consciously trying to be slow 😂 And the 6 I thought might fish nice and slow, but also might miss me some hook sets. Do you have the American version or the JDM?

@@WhereWeWild the American. If you’re trying to to finesse 7.2 or whatever might be better especially if you’re more used to that.

@@Lurtz14301 Yeah I can’t seem to find a 7.2 currently, and I’m not really sure how much of a difference it would really be from the 8.2 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 But cool yeah the JDM price is way cheaper right now and they have more in stock so I was considering it, not sure if there is any difference between the reels. I’ve never ordered from Japan before haha

@@WhereWeWild JDM reels are awesome. I don’t really think you would notice too much of a difference. Just gotta remember to slow down a little bit.

It’s holding up good. Have landed tons of bass and pike up to like 8 lbs on it. Nothing giant but it performs great all around. It’s winter right now so I haven’t used it in months and still won’t be using it until May.

Nice! I’m in the same position as you in Western PA with waiting until May to fish, but I’m pumped to use it when the weather warms up. Thanks for the video review.

Sure, np! I fish for bass mostly. Largemouth and Smallmouth. I get the occasional pike and I swear at them too lol.

Under 15 lb test they’ll chew it off like nothing. 15-30 is more resistant than mono or braid but not by a whole lot. 30+ starts to get fairly bite resistant. 60+ is quite resistant but super thick and tough to work with. If you’re in clear water I like using a musky fluoro leader, if stained water I just use a 6 inch titanium leader with 30+ breaking strength.

@@Lurtz14301 I was using 30 lb Daiwa shock leader, that I thought would be more abrasion/bite resistant. Had not heard of musky FC leader before. Might be the ticket.

@@kgasuns it’s usually 80 lb test or more but yeah very bite resistant. Only bad thing is it’s thick and you can’t really tie with it so it comes with a swivel which is usually very large to accommodate musky lures.

Pelican. I think it’s around 25$ on Amazon. Type in sup shoulder strap and it should pop up.

No if you got a backlash and had to cut it would probably be fine once. As long as you have smaller diameter line. I’d recommend 12 lb test or less mono or fluoro or 40 lb test or less braid.

You never have to cut line in any situation if you snag, just pull on it and it’ll break at the knot. That way you keep your line and won’t litter

Yes it’s a great reel.

D Lo as good. Obviously lighter spool so the ideal applications are a little different but it would work for almost anything besides big swimbaits or glidebaits.

You definitely could but if it’s a bigger deep diver it wouldn’t be ideal.

Never used an XT so can’t speak on it but I love the slx mgl.

Line shouldn’t matter. That’s a lot though. I usually do 2 brakes on. Try also turning the dial on the left rear of the reel up higher.

Wait, that’s the curado that has that setup. Did you adjust the centrifugal brakes?

Chris Fish and Fitness YA. 3 on 1 off. Side SVS is at 6. I thought with the spool tension tight like I got it, I’d get just a 4 yard cast then have to back off. But no. I’m thinking it’s the FC. I live in the north so it’s snow. I casted in the yard and it launches a Senko weightless with 32 turns back on retrieve. I tossed a jerk bait did well. Just it seems like every 6th cast gets messed up. Or the line just wants to circle and circle. I tried a skip cast and the whole spool of line loosened up lol. I saw some articles so I tried water abs line conditioner. Seemed to help a bit.

Oh I got ya. Might help also to cast it out and walk all the line out and reel it in with more tension on it so you pack the spool tighter.

Yeah you definitely could and for a baitcaster it would probably be my top pick for that under 200$ but I would probably still recommend a lighter spinning reel for the best casting distance.

You can throw pretty much anything on it but it mainly excels at throwing lighter baits 1/2 oz or under and lighter line, although I’ve heard it works well flipping too.
