Few CD sets in the history of Elvis Presley fandom have had a widespread cultural impact as the "decades" box sets, headed by Ernst Jorgensen. In this episode, Jamie and John unbox the last in a series of legendary box sets that paved the way for both Elvis fans and the general public to see Elvis more seriously as a music artist - a vital step that helped shift the perception of Elvis from where it was in the 1980s to where we are today!

For a long time I had the idea that this was the most weakly compiled of the 3 sets, but upon closer inspection, it is indeed better than the 60s one. There just aren't as many egregious exclusions. Early Mornin' Rain is definitely one, and I would replace Susan When She Tried with Fairytale. Making the first 4 discs chronological would probably improve it a little and even make the live disc a little stronger with the Wonder of You and Steamroller. The exclusion of the gospel material doesn't hurt it at all here - He Touched Me just isn't as strong as the other two gospel albums. Interestingly, the same secular designation is made for Amazing Grace on Back in Nashville as it is here. Definitely an Ernst decision that remains. The live disc is indeed lacking- the biggest problem is including Suspicious Minds from Aloha. That version is absolutely not better than a 1970 or 1972 version. Even the Memphis 74 might be better. This disc does reveal another issue with the 60s box- no live 1969 tracks. A couple of those would definitely help this disc, but that's a trapping with sticking to the decades concept.... As far as the rarities go, the star of the show is definitely She Thinks I Still Care take 2B. That's probably my most favorite outtake of all; it's much superior to the master. The only good mix of it IMO though is on the Moody Blue FTD - this one has some overdone reverb on the snare and the Way Down in the Jungle Room mix has that damn overdone slapback echo. Ferrante did do a good job on some of these new mixes, digital reverb and all. My biggest problem with his work isn't the actual mixing, it was his sloppy digital editing. Bad crossfades, bad cuts, and first notes cut off (see Steamroller)....

@@EAPSociety Are you guys familiar with the live "never been to Spain" on this box set? The reason I ask is because for some reason, this is hands down, THE BEST live mixed sound I'VE EVER HEARD, and I've heard everything. Have you guys listened to this with a good pair of headphones? It's pure perfection, as if you are in the actual showroom. Your thoughts?

I love all the boxsets, but the 60's song list is crazy! If they couldn't put "Can't Help Falling In Love" on there, they could have at least put it as the last song on the live disc of the '70's box!

The 60s box is my favorite cover. Elvis looks so dashingly handsome in the black suit with the red background. The 70s box is my favorite musically. I love all of Elvis’s music but the 70s is my jam. I’m glad you guys mentioned that Early Mornin Rain was a glaring omission because not only is it my personal favorite Elvis song but it’s so overlooked in Elvis’s catalog in general.

I think the cover shot is stunning, especially when released on the big box in the UK! I think I relished this release even more than the 50’s box. Being a fan in the early 90’s was a treat for the first time getting “virtually” everything essential remastered on CD

Great retrospective on these seminal sets! The 50’s box set the precedent for COMPLETE studio masters. Absolutely fantastic set. Impossible to do that with the 60’s material within 5 discs, so I think they chose the next best option. I, too, was a bit perplexed with the exclusion of certain songs, but in the context of the other 60’s collections released during this time, it makes sense. To get the rest of the 60’s material, you knew exactly what you needed and what to get-Double Features, along with G.I. Blues and Blue Hawaii, gospel and ‘68 comeback discs. While Walk a Mile in My Shoes does give a better overall view of Elvis in the 70’s as a whole, I really feel they should have stuck with the 60’s set format of complete secular studio masters, in chronological order. At the time it was confusing to me exactly what I needed to complete the 70’s masters and it took me a while to finally collect it all.

Thank you so much - so glad you enjoyed it! And thank you for sharing your thoughts, too; funny about the 70s masters, as that was exactly my experience in trying to track the rest of them down!

Hey Guys great video and a nice completion of this particular series of overviews. Because I am somewhat a slightly more than casual Elvis fan, these boxed sets appealed to me greatly. Without knowing about 'what was missing', they filled the bill greatly. I understood the concept of these sets. You are correct when you say that these boxed sets were a game changer. The CD format had come into its own by then and record labels were finally getting their act together in the 'back catalogue compilation business'. I have a lot of CD boxed sets by different artists and I came to realise that, if done with some care, love, thought & consideration, they would be valued releases. For myself these were enough for a long time. Yeah I found other Elvis sets along the way, such as the excellent "Platinum: A Life In Music" and "A Golden Celebration", which I was somewhat disappointed with. I called myself a 'casual' fan but my CD & record (especially my 45's) collections might say otherwise. 😅 I have done some comparisons. Yes technology has improved over time and so has remastering techniques. However lets not diminish these boxed sets sonically. They're still very listenable even though they're firmly of their time. Love your work & the channel guys. Cheers 👍😊

Thank you so much, Peter! You're absolutely right on these being a huge deal. And I'd agree on wanting to respect these for what they were at the time, though we do also have to have an eye on new fans who want to know which sets are the best to get for sound quality - so we have to thread the needle a bit there. So glad you're enjoying the channel! :)

wow, nice episode, as always... when you paged through the book, i was reminded of "Elvis in Demand" when i saw the album cover... that album was legendary in our house in 1977, that golden looking album, and i remember it had the red sticker on.... i thought it was an awesome release... though we were not very careful in handling the LP record, so there occurred a skip of the needle at the start of Hi Heel Sneakers which is still burnt into my memory when i hear the song... 😄

The 70s set is still a worthy addition to any collection, and the sound is still competitive. I can't remember though if 'I Really don't want to Know has that extra drum roll thing at the very end? It seemed to disappear from all future releases? Even the the Nashville Sessions releases? Cheers JnJ. ❤

Hi, Denny! It's still very, very good, though I don't think it's still definitive for new fans looking for the best source. And I think this does have the drum roll, but I don't remember for sure and I don't have the set with me to check - but yeah, I love that roll!

Well, my very first Impression of this Cover Pic Elvis Box Set, was like..."Elvis is kneelin' on a Surfboard with his Jumpsuit on, a slow-nice-cool Hawaiian Sea Wave; it is deep after Midnight plus our King has a mic in his hand and sings a capella "Aloha Oe"🌊🌴 Jokin' aside; The Original EU Compact Disc BOX Set was in a LP Size format and it really looks like that😂 Well, now talkin' about the content: i guess CD 5 is a very bad choice! Elvis Live in the 1970's is cool after all, but the most beloved Recordings EVER by all of the 99% Elvis 1970's Devoted Fans "Live In Concert" love this Songs! For a Complentist it was/is really disturbing, the same goes for the 60's Box-Set (i've criticism before no Movie Songs etc...), So the Question is, why including some really good Live Song Compilation and NOT the Complete Elvis 70's Studio Recordings; but so what, it is what it is😶, for the Record, a worldwide Vinyl Edition was NEVER EVER released of the 70's Box Set! Thank You John and Jamie👍

As a compliation the set was great for the time. But I remember feeling let down because the 50's were complete (for the time). The 60's set did provide all studio recordings except for Gospel/Soundtracks/live but these were available in other sets/releases in newly released complications. When came to the 70's again I understand not including all live/gospel/christmas material as these would be available on separate compliation releases, but because it didn't include all studio tracks, it meant having to buy multiple separate individual album releases just to have all 70 studio tracks on CD. I just wish it had the missing studio tracks (other than live/gospel/christmas) but perhaps the idea (at the time), was you had to buy more releases to be complete. But unlike the 60's set there wasn't comprehensive re-releases that made it easier to collect all material. I would have dropped the live disc for the missing studio tracks but then released a live set. I think (for the time) they only wanted 5 discs and they didn't think commerically it would sell as well if it didn't have a cross section of material. It's a seems that all 3 sets seem to have different agendas but at least the release strategy for the first 2 made it easier to collect all material.
@EAPSociety
@EAPSociety 11 месяцев назад
Hi, Brandon! You make some great points, and I do remember having similar thoughts at the time once I discovered what all was missing on here. And they do seem to have different agendas, which I think has to do with public perception at the time. But yeah, having all masters from a decade in one place would have been nice!
