Really enjoyed this one, guys! I've always been a bit sentimental (me) about this album as it was one of the earliest LPs I had, so I didn't have as much to really compare and contrast it with as a young fan. I'm 100% in agreement with John that Elvis is Back is a culmination of the first era, I've called it Elvis's best "50s" album. It is a shame that Something for Everybody has been relatively overlooked, possibly in part because of its proximity to much bigger, more popular or remarkable material from the same era (EIB, HHIM, GI Blues, Blue Hawaii and all the singles). The Nashville A-Team, Jordanaires & Scotty/DJ are on top of their game as much as Elvis is. Naturally, it's very much in line with quite a bit of what was going on in the pop-tinged country music coming out of Nashville (and in particular Studio B) at the time and I've found this album pairs very nicely with Roy Orbison's Lonely and Blue or Marty Robbins' Just A Little Sentimental, both from the same year (the latter sharing some of the same crew and featuring some songs Elvis would also touch upon later like Hurt, I Can't Help if I'm Still in Love With You, Unchained Melody and Are You Sincere). I was partly listening to this in my car so apologies if I missed this, but I was surprised I didn't hear you mention that all the Something for Everybody material was done in just one night! (Again, sorry if you did and I just missed it). That alone makes the album feel so much more of a whole and more cohesive. Keep up the great work Jamie & John!

Thank you, Justin! (nicely done on the "Sentimental Me" line, always love those). You're right; it does get overlooked for a lot of those reasons - in fact, I think that much of Elvis's 60's catalog gets overlooked because there's often no video of him then performing the songs (which is why the movies get mentioned in this period, often to the exclusion of a few songs like "It's Now Or Never," "Little Sister," etc). But everyone is absolutely on their game here, and it shows! Those are nice pairing albums, too, I'll have to take a listen to those again, in that context. And you're right - we didn't mention it! Just got missed in all of the other things we were talking about, so I'm pinning this comment so that everyone sees that, too!

Col. just shows what Elvis thought of those mid-to late 60s soundtrack songs, where he never gave his all vocally to them. However oddly enough there is at least one or more song gems on most of the Soundtrack releases. The "Potluck" and "Elvis For Everybody Sessions" prove how capable he was at giving a command performance to good song material when presented with it. Stay safe and go well.

Sean, I agree 100% with your comment. Other Elvis channels have their value but EAP really do their research which is nice for a change. With the Elvis Story one has to get the info just right. Because many of us know the story well. and EPA tells the story so well. I am sure in time, their subscriptions will grow as people like ourselves pass their channel ID to others. Sean, like you, and many others here, I enjoy the deep analysis and the time length that EPA bring to the Elvis discussion. I am in Brisbane Australia, but I feel so close to the individual talking points. Stay safe and go well.

If Parker hadn't con Elvis to stay in the US, England would have been the first place he would have head for in the Lisa Marie. He should have fired Parker in 1969 and set up a tour of England and Europe. Oh, what would have been. In the end, Parker killed Elvis in spirit and in drive. Elvis would possibly have become a new man, if he toured overseas. Hope he's happy where ever he is.

@@sincerelyelvispresley Apparently Steele says he talked to Elvis for some time. Like you Sean, I don't believe it ever happened, and those closes to Elvis dismiss it as pure nonsense. I’ve always said, ballads are the crème de la crème with Elvis, he was in fact a crooner at heart. I have the WaxTime iteration of this record, sounds slick. I’ve never understood the lack of fanfare, it’s a solid album. Of course nothing tops “Elvis is Back”, which in my humble opinion is young EP @ the height of his powers!
@EAPSociety
@EAPSociety Год назад
Hi, Marlon! Absolutely - John and I talked about this a bit in a video we haven't aired yet that we may end up reshooting, but we think that Elvis being so tied to Rock & Roll created an expectation of him that wasn't really fair to his actual artistic development, and the acceptance of that development.
@TERRYMism
@TERRYMism Год назад
Marlon, have to agree with you on Elvis and Ballads. That was his main aim when going to Sun, in 1953 on his lunch hour, his very first cuts were Ballads "My Happiness" b/w "That's When your Heartaches Being". And every Ballad that Elvis sung, was perfection. I think he would balk at being called a "Crooner" a ballad singer with a perfect voice for Ballads, yes. I have the Analogue Production two record set at 45rpm, of "Elvis Is Back" its the best I have heard, you even hear him breath into the microphone which ads a nice touch to an already fantastic recording. Marlon, if you can, the version I have is the one to get. And to end that version is "Reconsider Baby". WOW... Turn this up loud, to really appreciate the brilliance of Elvis' singing but also the musicianship of the player's. This song is so underrated in Elvis' musical canon. It's criminal. Stay safe and go well Marlon.

@@TERRYMism Hi Terry, I’ve actually got the Third Man Records 78rpm reissue of those two initial Sun sides & I’ve been dying to add the Analogue Productions “Elvis Is Back” record to my humble collection. You stating that you can actually hear Elvis breathing on the mic, gets me all the more anxious to acquire it now rather than later. I’ll definitely turn it up loud & louder for “Reconsider Baby” which also happens to be one of my favorites on the album . TCB⚡️Terry!

@@Marlon_belcione The Third Man release on 45rpm I have lost two of those in the mail so have given up collecting that. I do however have the complete SUN 45rpm releases. A Replica set was produced in 2018 exact in every way except they do not have the Plastic Products Stamper push marks. This 2018 set had a strictly limited run of 250 sets and are identical in every way, they even come in the same brown paper sleeve as the original, including the correct etched numbers in the Dead Wax. These are really a sight to be hold. Not sure who produced these 2018 SUN versions, but they are the best I have seen. Stay safe and go well.

"GI Blues" Soundtrack got in the way of "Elvis Is Back" selling more than it did on original release 1960. I have the Analogue Productions version at 45 rpm the best sounding version I have ever heard, and at 69 years of age, I have heard most versions. Analogue Productions sound superb. The listener hears him breathing into the microphone, which is ok by me, ads that personal touch to his singing. It really is like you are in the studio, as he's laying these track to tape.

@FrankieLovesElvis
@FrankieLovesElvis Год назад
@@TERRYMism First off, I believe Elvis is Back sold more copies then what it’s claimed for. Second, the album had no “Hit” singles on it. G.I. Blues out sold that album because it had the movie behind it to promote it , but there were six months difference between the two albums. Three weeks at number two is really not that bad considering soundtracks were where the majority of sales were at.
@TERRYMism
@TERRYMism Год назад
@@FrankieLovesElvis Yes RCA Victor should have staggered the releases over a longer timeframe. Its a pity Elvis Fans weren't working at RCA at the time. I think FTD are doing an amazing job of keeping his memory alive for those of us that appreciate what he did while alive. And he thought he didn't leave anything of value behind. How very wrong he was. Just a thought. Stay safe and go well. Francesco Greco.

Good insight and observations as always. Something for Everybody is a sophisticated album Elvis was trying for vocal and audio perfection and challenging himself on what he could deliver the emotional energy is there it's just not immediately obvious. This album is what I call headphone music to get how great it is you need to listen to without distractions and background noise. Pot Luck is even better I repeat play Fountain of Love all the time and wonder why the song and album isn't a fan favourite. Pot Luck should be in ever fans top 5 of Elvis albums but then we all have different tastes.

Billy Smith has mentioned Paul, that "Elvis would hold himself back from giving 100%" to a song till he felt the time was right. Sam Phillips gave Elvis good advice before leaving SUN for RCA..."you have a gift here, don't be afraid of it". Sound Advice indeed. "Love Fountain Of Love" and the almost Flamenco guitar within the song structure. And the song Elvis partly wrote with Red "You'll Be Gone" such Drama in his vocal. Its a shame Elvis didn't write more, oh, what a story he could tell if he did. Am I right in thinking that there will not be a Stand Alone sessions release of "Elvis For Everyone" as most if not all of the songs there, have been released on "The Potluck Sessions" and "The Elvis For Everybody Sessions" releases? However, I am looking forward to the upcoming FTD "Fun In Acapulco" Vinyl release Stay safe and go well Paul.

Hey Guys great video as usual. You've managed to pique my interest a bit here. So much so that I pulled out "Elvis Is Back' & "Something For Everyone" from the Album Collection boxed set.The former seems to have a foot in his pre-army era with some of the tracks such as "Fever" & "Reconsider Baby" while delving into the 'smooth crooner' style. The later is taking that crooner style to another level. While it might have been easy to lump Elvis in with the teen idol 'Bobbys' of that era, these recordings do stand outside that genre. Elvis was a superior, versatile vocalist, head and shoulders above anyone else at that time. I've been one of the many guilty of falling for the narrative that his 60's output wasn't worthy of him (aside from the Memphis album sessions). I may need to change my tune a bit though its a shame that his recorded output in that era was dominated by his film Soundtrack albums, mostly with loads of songs that weren't worthy of his talent. That to me is what makes the Memphis LP so special because it's kind of a pointer to what could've been. I might be wrong here and I welcome any 'Elvis education' you can give me. Cheers guys. Keep up the great work 👍🙂
@EAPSociety
@EAPSociety Год назад
Hi, Peter!! Thank you SO much for sharing - that's exactly what we hope to inspire in both new and old fans. Like you said, Elvia was so versatile and talented that even the lesser-known material really does shine, much of the time (soundtracks notwithstanding, but they have their own kind of charm, imo). And don't feel bad for falling into those narratives; we've all been there in various ways over the years, and a lot of it has to do with how Elvis was marketed and how he caught the cultural zeitgeist. But I know how much I enjoy finding new Elvis barriers to break for myself, so I hope you've been having as much fun with that, too! 😁

Another Excellent discussion guys and I do agree with John the Elvis is Back album is superior to Something For Everybody and Pot Luck is better as well . I think Elvis sings the material extremely well in this period and feel there was no better singer in the world but I feel the material belongs in the James Darren or Frankie Avalon world of that period. I slipped I stumbled I fell is my favourite track from that album but feel it belongs on the Pot Luck Album great discussion John and Jamie thank you for the review cheers Carl .
@EAPSociety
@EAPSociety Год назад
Thank, Carl! Yeah, "Elvis Is Back" is pretty tough to beat, as that cusp of Elvis's first and second artistic periods is quite a combo! And that's a good point; he was definitely going more cosmopolitan/countrypolitan with these sessions.

Hi there JnJ love this album, in fact all three, HHIM PLWE and SFE. His vocal dexterity at this point was never bettered and it continued until around 66? You mentioned his transformation from earthy rocker to velvet crooner? I've often wondered if after 59 he only sang rock n roll begrudingly? We didn't get that 50s rebel back until 68? Cheers JnJ. ❤
@EAPSociety
@EAPSociety Год назад
Hi, Denny! Yeah, this part of Elvis's growth lasted until about 1966, when he started going back to more of his rock, blues, and country roots. He still enjoyed Rock & Roll, but it wasn't his main focus; to be fair, it was never a sole focus (even in the 50s), but it was less so as he got older.

Yeah, you're likely right; I'm not sure on the 1968 sessions, either, just that it's possible if they keep skipping soundtrack sessions like they have been (since there aren't many sessions left between 64 and June if 68).
