Unboxing Missouri: What It's Like Living in Missouri

Is Missouri filled with a bunch of backwards rednecks?
Is St. Louis the capital of the nation?
And is Missouri in the south or the midwest?
We’re gonna go over that and soo much more. So lets grab some fireworks and head down to the lake. We’re gonna unbox the state of Missourah!
Well look at this. That sure looks like a lot of fun, huh? This is the Lake of the Ozarks, and it’s smack dab in the middle of Missouri. This is one of the largest man-made lakes in the country. It’s 92 miles long, and there’s more shoreline on this lake than the entire state of California!
Every summer, people come from all over the midwest to drink too much and drive their boats too fast. And lots of people live along its banks, too, including a lot of second home owners. There’s 70,000 docks and 900 campgrounds on its shoreline. Can you imagine that? Here at Lake of the Ozarks?
This is just one of many awesome places to visit in Missouri when you want to get outside. Missouri is very diverse and has all sorts of stuff going besides big lakes. There’s forests, mountains (theyre kinda small), wide open plains and big huge ghettos. But if you’re thinking of moving to Missouri, you gotta know where the best places are, the worst places are and where the perfect home for you is. That way you’ll fit right into the Show Me State right.
This is Missouri. As you can see there are 6 various regions in this state and each one is really different from one another.
Missouri is kinda a transition zone between the south and the midwest. It’s considered a southern state, but it’s not ALL southern. The bottom half is VERY southern, but the more north you go the more midwest Missouri is.
It’s very much Yankee vs. Confederate, urban vs. rural, blue vs. red. Missouri vs. Missourah. We’ll just call it the northern most southern state hows that.. And NO Missouri is NOT a 69,709 square mile trailer park. There’s more to it than that, mister.
We’re going to begin our discovery of Missouri up here in the northernmost part of the state.

I’m from Italy, but since I want to move to the US my father this year took me to the USA and we travelled the whole route 66. We crossed a good chunk in Missouri, and I have to say it was one of my favorite states. The people were pretty kind and having explained to an old lady in Red Oak II my situation she even gave me pretty good advice on moving to the USA and even offered me a job complete with a roof over my head and food. Now, I don’t know if she actually could have helped me that much from a legal point of view, but she seemed sincere about wanting to help me. Also, the woods were amazing, I fell in love with them.

I have lived in Missouri most of my life however I did live in a big city Houston Texas for around 10 years. The biggest difference I noticed when coming back to Missouri versus big city is people wave at each other and seem to be more personable where big cities tend to be more anonymous and mind your own business. That has it's good and bad points lol. If you get in trouble in a small town everyone is going to know it. I wanted to thak you for taking the time to interview locals. I enjoyed this video.

@Andrew Lynn, I can say for me, my first response when I got to Whiteman was, who did I piss off to get such a crappy assignment ? But it grew on me. It was my last assignment which I retired from in 1992. I wound up getting a job at Gardner Denver in Sedalia and I and my family attended church in Sedalia. I'm not sure of the consensus by active duty nowadays where Sedalia has substantially grown and with it crime has become worse. But overall it's still fairly decent. I don't have much experience with Warrensburg but I know that there are active duty airmen that choose to live there.

Missouri has parts of at least four different regions within its borders, and because of that there isn't much of a uniform state culture. I'm from the Ozarks, and having visited both, I consider myself culturally closer to the Appalachians than anywhere in the midwest. I also went to college at Mizzou and living in Columbia provided a contrast to my childhood experiences.

Thanks for another great video, Nick! My parents went on vacation in Branson a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it--and yes, they were over 70. My Mom used to have a coworker from Missouri, and he acted like someone from the Midwest, but spoke with a Southern accent. I'm surprised there's a restaurant people are excited to go to where buns are thrown at them. I'm also surprised Uranus Fudge Factory is not located closer to Lambert's. The gentleman farmer gave a very insightful answer to your excellent question about why minorities seem not to be settling in such farming communities. He made it clear that minorities are very much welcome there--now more than ever before, because of the shrinking population. And while it makes sense that people might be afraid to be the "odd one out" in such a community, SOMEONE has to be the first to settle down there long term. Someone has to have the courage to stand alone.

My mom moved to Missouri in the late 1980s from San Diego because she loved the country life and she wanted to get away from the big city, plus a good friend of hers in high school lived there. She lived in a small town - perhaps village would be a better word to describe it - called Raymondville in southern Missouri. Thanks, Nick for sharing this with us! I really like the interviews in the second half of the video. Great work, friend!

My father was born and raised in Des Arc MO, not far from Mark Twain National Forest and right on the edge of what you call Methopotamia (great name!). One of my daughters-in-law is from across the state in Purdy, MO. Our roots go deep in the Show Me State. You could not have found a better spokesman for rural Missouri than the first man you interviewed. He is intelligent, well spoken and knowledgeable. Thank you for choosing an excellent representative for those of us who have chosen to live in "the country."

I stumbled across this video and it made laugh because a good amount of it is true! I have lived in Missouri for a few years now (originally from the west coast) and I like it for the most part. People are pretty friendly. It took me by surprise when I first moved here at how nice people are and they wave at you and say hello. Where I'm from people keep to themselves. One thing I don't think I will get used to though are the winters, it can get pretty rough.

Good Evening Nick! What a beautiful State is Missouri! I loved to see all the greenery! And the lakes! It appears to me there is so much you could enjoy! Single or with your family! Yes every State has run down places but overall it just so pretty in the Summers I'm sure they also get lots of snow in the Winters. The cost of living seems reasonable even to purchase a home there! Now I can surely understand why some people have two homes! I thank you so much for sharing this video! I have enjoyed watching them all even my State!!! I truly admire this Man! I pray and hope they start helping every farmer from each State! They also need all the help they can get! I hope everyone is doing well and please stay safe 🙏

Springfield is between two weather systems. Winters are mild and some years no snow at all or snow that lasts only a day. When you see weather for the US, the weather they're showing for KC and St. L - that's not Springfield. Totally different. I moved back to Springfield from CA when I retired. I sold a 1,000 sq. ft condo built in 1972. I bought a 2,834 sq ft house on one level built in 1997. I repainted, new carpet, new window coverings, new driveway, new appliances, furnished a bedroom, office, dining room, livingroom, family room (only brought furniture for the guest room and breakfast room with me) and screened in the patio. I still had money left over for traveling.

The farmer guy you interviewed was outstanding. Did not catch where he was from but the story he tells is spot on with my experience with small towns in Northeast Missouri. My dad was born on a farm in Shelby County. Back then it had 20,000 people. It now has about 5500. There are several abandoned hamlets and only the larger towns still survive. Farmers who were good businessmen were able to survive and thrive.

In the Ozarks most of the farmers owned small plots of land and hence were not likely to own slaves nor be pro-Confederate. That is true even in the seceding states, where pro-Union sentiment was strongest among hill farmers. @@denniscarver7681
